Ah, Star Fox. Staaaaaar Fox!

The series has taken so many forms over the years. You have the on-rails/all-range action of the SNES and N64 titles (including the unreleased Star Fox II). You have the mixed approach of Assault... The "strategic" approach of Command... And I believe there was one more... Ah yes, the Zelda clone Stairfax Temperatures.

But now the series is missing! Who knows when we may see another. :-\

In the meanwhile, Star Fox fans, I'd like to know what your dream Star Fox title would look like. And emphasis on the word "dream" -- although you can temper it with some degree of reality (I.E. physically possible, but requiring a developer's best effort).

Here's mine (going all-out)!

STAR FOX 64-II

- Co-developers: PlatinumGames AND Treasure
- Director: Hideki Kamiya / Producer: Shigeru Miyamoto
- The most content-packed installment in series history
- Difficulty slider for risk/reward, like Kid Icarus Uprising
- 100 missions — 70 Arwing; 15 Landmaster; 15 on-foot
- Branching paths can lead to alternate levels and endings
- Players will see roughly 50 levels on a single playthrough
- Levels have three parts — on-rails, all-range, boss battle
- Levels can change up the order and extent of each part
- Levels are vast, intricately detailed, and fully destructible
- Huge variety of enemy types and over-the-top set-pieces
- Issue commands to AI-controlled wingmates in campaign
- Team includes Fox, Falco, Peppy, Slippy, Miyu and Fay
- Arwing can hover and strafe in all-range mode, like Warhawk
- Arwing has extendable appendages for melee and grappling
- Arwing can find upgrades, like a Galaga-style "second ship"
- Arwing transforms into a bipedal mech with new abilities
- Mech is reminiscent of mech in Starhawk, only faster
- Mech can infiltrate installations during flight missions
- Mech can dismantle ground fortifications (I.E. anti-air)
- Mech is originally from the unreleased STAR FOX 2
- Landmaster is amphibious and can roll right into the water
- Landmaster can sail like a ship, and dive like a submarine
- Landmaster's submarine form is called Blue Marine Mode
- Landmaster can drive up walls and across ceilings
- Landmaster uses anti-gravity treads for climbing
- On-foot missions (on-rails) play similar to Sin & Punishment
- On-foot missions (all-range) feature "stylish character action"
- This means TPS action like Vanquish, melee like Bayonetta
- There are also one-on-one rival duels like Metal Gear Rising
- Fox's legs are enhanced with new cybernetic augmentations
- This references his appearance in the SNES promotional art
- Fox's legs can super-sprint, rocket-jump, jackhammer foes
- Fox's leg moves are regulated by a gauge, Vanquish-style
- Fox wields a variety of firearms, and an extendable bō staff
- Fox and his vehicles can be customized to a high degree
- Customize by equipping new armaments and subsystems
- Players control a transformable Great Fox for the final battle
- Andross plugs his head into a robot body for the final battle
- Most cutscenes/codecs feature Thunderbirds-style puppets
- Live-action puppets call back to the SNES promotional art
- Cutscenes during missions are all in-engine (codecs aside)
- Database has art, music, lore, bestiary, 3D figures, dioramas
- Achievements rewarded by prize wall, like Kid Icarus Uprising
- Online leaderboards are available for missions, campaigns
- Replay data is uploaded to authenticate the record-holders
- Multiplayer has local split-screen, online, and local/online
- Multiplayer has Warhawk-like sandbox battles (2-32 players)
- Multiplayer has a co-op campaign for up to four players
- In co-op, players are briefed on the target and receive intel
- Players have various options, similar to the heists in GTAV
- Players must divide and conquer, handling different tasks
- For the sandbox battles, players create custom characters
- Pick species, gender, color of skin/fur/feathers/scales, etc.
- Battle by land, air and sea, in free-for-all and team formats
- Spectate live matches (co-op and PvP) via Star Fox TV
- Soundtrack scored by an all-star team, led by Koji Kondo
- Bonus: Mirror Mode that mirrors levels, remixes enemies
- Bonus: Challenging mini-campaign with playable Wolf
- Bonus: Super FX Mode with flat-shaded polygon style
- Bonus: The unreleased SNES title STAR FOX 2
- Above bonuses are secret post-game content

Even though Kamiya said he's no longer interested in Star Fox (due to the incessant pestering of people on Twitter), part of me hopes this is a mere attempt to cull the fanboy spam. After all, the original games are among his favorites. I'm sure Kamiya could take Star Fox and dial it up to a Spinal Tap-py 11. :)

What would your dream Star Fox look like?

Did we ever get a real answer as to why Star Fox 2 was canceled?

Wasn't it almost ready to be released?

Why isn't there source code out there? Did Nintendo just throw it in the trash?

That's all you need

I just want Star Fox 64 part 2, without any of the bullshit they added in later games. Is it too much to ask for, Nintendo? :(

I want lush landscapes, barren wastes, towers of lava and lava caverns, complex military bases, and all the areas from 64 revisited.

Am I a bad person for wanting Slippy to die permanently?

Yeah, that would make a great Starfox game.

Add some type of narrative of Fox as a veteran pilot, flying his last missions, trying to end the greatest threat yet - all fueled by the death of a sad, little frog.

Ah, Star Fox. Staaaaaar Fox!

- Developed by PlatinumGames, directed by Hideki Kamiya

And this. Incredible thought.

A Kid Icarus-Uprising style StarFox game.

More emphasis on the "good" StarFox characters (Fox, Falco, Peppy, Wolf, Panther, Leon)

Less emphasis on the shit ones (Krystal, Slippy)

The N64 was coming out (or so Nintendo thought, it ended up getting delayed by like a year) and Nintendo thought it's advanced 3D graphics would make SF2 look terrible in comparison.

As for a new games, keep it on rails but expand on the shooting gameplay rather than trying to turn it into an open world shooter or arena shooter. I second letting a dev like Platinum do it if Nintendo won't do it in house. Star Fox needs it's FZero GX. Keep the traditional gameplay but turn it up to 11.

Your suggestion is pretty awesome OP, I think I'll just agree with that. Maaaaybe cut the on-foot missions, but they sound pretty neat the way you've described them.

100 total missions with highly detailed and destructible environments might be a bit much though.

Basically No Man's Sky. But you could only land on other planets for a quick breather from awesome space battles, you can't get out of your ship.

Did we ever get a real answer as to why Star Fox 2 was canceled?

It's been known for a long time now that Nintendo wanted to create a clear differentiation between the N64 and the SNES so it didn't want to go ahead with another 3-D polygonal game for 16-bit.

Why isn't there source code out there? Did Nintendo just throw it in the trash?

The source code for 99% of all videogames ever is not "out there."

The answer to this thread is "a good game, or nothing."

I loved 64 back in the day but a modern SF64 wouldn't cut it for me. I would expect a harder game with a stronger arcade feeling, something like Sin and Punishment 2 at least.
If a game is short it has to be more complex and with more features/mechanisms that add replay value.
I absolutely love Platinum but I am not sure if they could work on something like this.
They could definitely pull it off, but there are also other developers, even internal studios that could do something like this.

Basically Star Fox 64-2. More levels. More characters. More everything. Wii U. 2014. Platinum Games.

MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Star Fox Assault had the greatest multiplayer of any SF game in part because of the misture of tank/arwing.on-foot gameplay.
Yes, the multiplayer in Assault was fantastic. If you liked that, you would LOVE Warhawk on the PS3. Which is why in my bullet-point list in the OP, I reference that game.

A Kid Icarus-Uprising style StarFox game.
Yeah, this is what I'm going for with my proposal for every level to have three parts: 1) on-rails, 2) all-range, and 3) boss battle.

100 missions -- 70 Arwing, 20 Landmaster, 10 on-foot. Seems about right, but obviously idyllic due to volume. Though if anyone can pack an unprecedented amount of content into a game, it's the guy who made TW101 and the never-ending Okami...

Yeah, something in the lines of StarFox 64.

But if you want to be bold: 4 player coop (will probably need less on-rails content though).

Starfox 64-2.

30 levels.
25 arwing
3 landmaster
2 submarine

Just make a damn starfox game and not a halfassed arena combat game. The best part of Starfox Armada were the arwing levels and there were only 2 of them.

Gimme Star Fox Adventures 2! Not really a fan of space shooters, but Star Fox Adventures blew me away when I first played it and continues to impress me to this day.

I'd like it to have some space sim/TBS elements, with you commanding the war strategy. You can send your levelable AIs to go down to the surface and fight there way into a base while you dogfight above, or you can switch those roles.

There would be plenty of traditional shootemup levels of course. And maybe you could have multiple players take on different roles in a mission, or fight alongside you, or even get sent to a different mission at tthe same time for strategic purposes.

How you fight the war would determine your ending, naturally.

All in aall feel like this is what SF was naturally leading to, you can see elements in both SF2 and Command.

This should be obvious but I'd love for it to be developed by Platinum Games. It doesn't even have to be directed by Hideki Kamiya, but considering his games have the best scripts out of all of PG's offerings then it'd be a huge plus.

It's repeated a lot as a suggestion but very few developers out there are able to master the "extended campaign treated as a score attack" game play. They're also incredible in mastering high speed action and haven't done a game yet that offers multiple paths - something I'd love to see. Finally, Platinum are one of best at doing cheesy, memorable scripts, something which defined Star Fox 64 to this day.

That's what I'd love to see. A high speed shooter with 20+ levels and alternate paths, increase in speed and various gimmicks, and a cheesy script that adds a layer of fun and awesome to the mix.

Something thats more of a throwback to old Sega arcade shooters: A little After Burner Climax, some Planet Harriers, and a bit of Galaxy Force II. In other words, more like the original Starfox.

No sub, walker, or tank transformations.

Throw in the original composer or music similar to Assault as well.

A game that manages to splice the stylings of Starfox 64 with Starfox Assault, plenty of rail shooting stages that follow the style of SF64's linear stages, all range mode is linked in with ground combat like a good amount of SFA stages.
In a sense this is kind of what Assault tried to do anyway but it lacked content (far too few linear missions in particular), could've used more polish and the writing wasn't up to snuff.
But it's something I'd love to see returned to, the multiplayer in particular was so fun even if it was flawed, a much more refined version of this open deathmatch (which has sprung up a lot lot more over the last gen) with online could end up really good, while it would be easy to simply as for a game that straight up follows SF64 style design I think taking that chance again that Assault went for could pay off if done very well.

Kid Icarus Uprising actually hits a lot of the notes I'd have liked to see a modern Starfox go for, guess it's not too surprising seeing that the SF franchise was considered by Sakurai himself for the game if I recall.

The on-foot portions of my dream game (which again, only comprise 10% of the levels) would be like the levels in Metal Gear Rising in terms of progression -- very straightforward, from point A to point B. Not so much arena-based. And like the vehicle missions, they would be divided into three parts: on-rails (like Sin & Punishment), all-range (like Metal Gear Rising), and boss battle (the arena fight -- imagine fighting Wolf one-on-one with MGRR-style music and matching lyrics).

And did I mention Fox would have robotic legs for jackhammer kicks, shooting missiles and rocket-jumping? :p

I'm going to say something more like Star Fox 64, but I wouldn't mind some of the on-foot and tank levels from Assault as long as they're improved. I would want a ton of different Arwings to choose from and a more involved story. Also through in online multiplayer and you got yourself the game of a lifetime.

Honestly not sure what a good, on-rails shooter would be nowadays.

Kid Icarus would be a starting point. It had wonder dialogue and depth to the characters. Which is what Star Fox needs more of. The mechanics only grew tiresome because of a poor control scheme, with two sticks it would've been beautiful.

Take the formula from Kid Icarus, add in the uniquely Star Fox elements (Team members, branching paths, etc.), expand the characters/universe, add in some type of online multiplayer, put it on Wii U. That's what I want.

Star Fox could easily be a cheap, $15-25 downloadable game too. Not sure if that franchise can be $60 big anymore.

What do you guys think of my live-action puppet idea in the OP? :)

I'm thinking very detailed puppets, just like the original promo art.

GraveHorizon

poop meter feature creep
Star Fox 64 in HD with bigger/wider/longer levels and tons of branching paths with different endings based on paths taken and choices made. Throw in a space battle surrounding a tiny moon you can actually fly down to and land on, and shoot things out of the sky. 4 player local and online co-op. Local can be splitscreen or have every player on the same screen because the levels would be so wide. I'm basically thinking of a top down shooter in terms of crazy amounts of bullets and lasers flying around in co-op. More power-ups.

What do you guys think of my live-action puppet idea in the OP? :)

I'm thinking very detailed puppets, just like the original promo art.

Unique and interesting. Could they do that for the whole game?

I like the idea of a 2D action game tightly designed around the mechanics of Fox (or Falco) in Super Smash Bros Melee.

I would only be okay with on-foot segments if the game was developed by Platinum. Otherwise, keep the action in the cockpit. Arwing-heavy, but throw in a few landmaster/submarine levels to break it up a bit. Keep all-range mode to a minimum--some bosses and a handful of levels, tops (Star Wolf battles of course).

I liked the original Star Fox's selectable difficulties and I also liked 64's branching paths...a combination of those two would be nice.

Yeah...basically I want another Star Fox 64 with the craziness jacked up a lot--I can see Sakurai or the guys at Platinum doing wonderful things with Star Fox.
