Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 27 - Feb 2 | The Power of Gamers

I think srk front page is kinda fine now for content. Its could improve a ton of course. Maybe because I am loyal to USD, but go there for tourney results a lot. I prefer srk to eventhubs for the most part. All the stats eh is trying is cool though.

Srk message boards are a mess though. Plus everything is not optimized for mobile/tablet navigation. Touch points for things are too damn small. Its annoying just getting around on my tablet.

I had that suspicion, but when he gets by Faust's...uh..."finger prodding" super, the helmet comes off and it looks like the same dude. Unless it isn't. Then, I'd still be wrong lol.

My fault I think that is Potemkin

Smedwick's persona waifu, Rise

Oh god P4.

Chie > Rise > Marie > Naoto for me ^w^

I always and still think GG has the best character designs.. I do like the designs of Rachel and Taokaka in BB though..

Yeeep, GG is a #2 for best character designs. A close one to KOF.

I only wish Dizzy was fixed up a bit

What kind of content are you interested in that we aren't currently providing?

I got this thread confused with the Xrd thread from this last page

Still waiting on someone to explain to me how the AH games are exploitative

Every single character in the game is intended to be the personification of a female anime trope.

I agree with you I don't think it's maliciously exploitative(I don't think the devs decided to make a game designed for no other purpose than to sell crap to Otaku) but I mean the end result is still the same. Same people buying merch and shit for it regardless of creative intent.

I feel the people condemning it as loli-fetish shit just want to talk shit about it though without really understanding it imo, which is never a good thing to be doing

Anyone here try commentating? How did you like it? Did you feel like you were able to disassemble the match to make it enjoyable for a casual viewer - and did you feel like you needed to?

I commentate all the time and find it pretty easy. I'm a natural loud mouth and entertainer. To me the most important part is building a backstory, making the result mater. Setting it up before the match and talking about it as the fight progresses. What's the deal with the players, what are their goals, how have they been doing lately, is there any history between the two. I have an encyclopedic memory of NRS tournament results and personalities so coming up with a narrative is usually easy.

This got the wheels turning, thank you!

LOL. I would suggest reading this, & this before praising Eventhubs. That site is filled with crooks.

that second article is one of the reason I barely even go to EH. They're the Zynga/King.com of the FGC. Taking credit for other peoples work, then cry when someone does something they don't like.

Brought a smile to my face when PR Balrog called out EH and YogaFlame24 yesterday, taking a video Balrog uploaded weeks ago and claimed it as their own. EH never posted an article for Ed's video, but within hours YF24 had an article all written up for his video

Aside from up-to-the-minute updates on event results, EH can fuck off.

Also I usually don't explain things for casuals. Only if it obviously calls for it like EVO. I figure for the most part those watching know the deal and more would want to hear my catchphrases and hype. If you don't know what's going on the human drama is still compelling, for example at KIT I commentated two guys playing for top 8. Neither had placed at a major before and it was a mirror match of a character that had not yet been in the top 8. I would rather build that up than explain the mechanics of the fight. Even if you don't play IGAU you can get behind that story and it'll probably be more meaningful than an explination of the mechanics.

I've dicked around with commentary at my old locals. I usually like to extrapolate on what the players might be thinking or planning, because it interests me personally. Obviously, you can't read the players' minds, but it helps me get into the match as a viewer if I think about it in terms of stuff like, "he's struggling on the ground right now so I should be ready for a jump." So I like to convey that. But mostly since it was just like <10 ppl we would crack awful jokes throughout the match and bait/incite the players themselves xD

yeah, guilty gear has nice character designs. They still fall into some anime archetypes, but the characters have more originality than what you'll find in blazblue. The theme of 80s heavy metal that permeates many aspects of the game helps give the characters a unique feel from other anime games.

So far I prefer the old designs to what we get in xrd though, especially for Potemkin.

Potemkin is a straight up Edward Elrich homage (and I love it.) They totally went for the FMA/Naruto modern all-ages Anime style and it really pops.

Yeah I totally agree.

But to me AH using female anime tropes is equivalent to Darkstalkers using classic monster lore. It's a theme.

To be honest I always thought Darkstalkers was pretty far removed from the "horror" concepts, with how anime it is.

I (and others on the net) thought that MK and KI's dark atmosphere was more suited to Werewolves and Skeletons and stuff fighting each other.

That Chainsaw Incident game has an interesting art style though.

Ok, Check out some of the poses in the animated sidebars when chars get hit by super KOs. It's KOF95/XIII King/Yuri stuff, but a lot more sexual in nature. It even focuses in on the crouch.

I think some of the sprites also look that way when chars get KOed (Skullgirls does this to- at least with Cerebella sometimes- I noticed there are two knocked out poses for at least some SG chars- I think it's face up/face down)

That said, Love Max and Ultra are the only fighters I'm looking forward to this year. I can overlook my complaints about the design- if only because I love spamming mikos.

I mean yeah. They're using classic horror monsters but it's regurgitated in their own art style. It's very Japanese with how expressive the animation is as well as simple and "cute" the designs themselves are for lack of a better word.

Darkstalkers designs are nice too. Like gg is anime + heavy metal, darkstalkers is anime + classic movie monsters. Having a theme like that goes a long way to making it not feel like another generic anime thing.

I don't really like any anime post 90s but I guess I'm not their target audience.

Idk, GG is pretty generic anime and so is darkstalkers. Just for their time period. You are just sounding bias. I'll go out on a limb to even say quite a bit of post 90's anime blows some of the older stuff away.

AFAIK if you get KO'd in an airborne state you end up in a different pose to if you are KO'd on the ground. Valentine does something a bit like Yuri/King when she is KO'd on the ground, although her clothes don't explode for no reason - her jacket slips off her shoulder. If memory serves Cerebella just collapses.

Yeah, too bad themes don't exist in a vacuum. Hence the criticism.

Are you a front page editor for SRK? I know you didn't ask me, but EH just seems to post a lot more of the FGC's happenings and provides a lot more content of their own. I know a lot of it is openly dismissed as trivial pap for those desperate to play some acceptance card, but it is what it is. Most times, if there's some tech video from someone in the community, or a FT__ between to players - I find it on EH before finding it on SRK if it's there at all (and I often check just to see what the parity is like). But maybe that's changed as of late and I haven't been paying enough attention. Looking between the two today, it seems both have their own variety of content.

I sympathize with a lot of the common criticisms of EH, but visiting the front page of SRK is more habitual since I've been around that site for so long more than anything. But I always check EH first.

There's nothing wrong with being a news aggregate site. Most people aren't checking in on FGW daily.

I can't stand EH after this adblock shit but some of the "they're thieves" complaints seem like a bit much. They should be more responsible and credit people though that's all.
