NeoGAF Games of the Year 2013 Awards

Guess the Bioshock Infinite backlash really is just the vocal minority. Great game, and great pick for #2, as #1 was never in question.

Really nice list all around.

Well, it seems that the ones who could overlook the flaws in the gameplay voted for it here, and the ones who couldn't are the "vocal minority". I'm couldn't overlook them, so I could only give it an honorable mention.

You know, for as often as I hear the chorus of "All reviews suck" here, aggregate GAF opinion tends to line up with mainstream gaming site reviewer opinion almost 1:1.

Which still doesn't mean anything for individuals who's opinion doesn't line up with GAFs. I am sure there are plenty of posters that don't have a single gaf top 10 in their list.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=734511 here is the relevant Media picks thread. If anyone is curious to see how GAF's tastes line up.

Really glad to see Fire Emblem on the list!

At the end of the day, I didn't like The Last of Us as much as everyone else apparently did and definitely don't think it deserved almost 2x the amount of votes as even the 2nd place choice got, but it was one of the better games of last year (it was on my list as well, don't worry, it just wasn't number 1). I thought the story dragged in some parts and the game play felt similar to Resident Evil 4, only not as fun. Outside of the two main characters, I didn't really find myself caring about anyone else, they all seemed pretty forgettable. I felt like it was more of an 8/10 game than a 10/10 game.

Great job to whoever it was that organized this by the way!

Sure? But I said nothing that claimed it represented every individual's opinions, just the overall consensus. That is sort of the point of a large-scale vote, you know.

Woo, super happy to see Fire Emblem, Metal Gear Rising, Pokemon XY, Mario 3D World, Animal Crossing, Zelda: ALbW, and The Wonderful 101 on the top 20.

Pleasantly happy to see Fire Emblem so high especially. Really awesome game for me.
Shoutouts to these cool people by the way.

You know, for as often as I hear the chorus of "All reviews suck" here, aggregate GAF opinion tends to line up with mainstream gaming site reviewer opinion almost 1:1.

I think some of it is that there are people voting in the GOTY list threads who have more mainstream type taste but who aren't necessarily big GAF users. Like there are a lot of GAF users who still get most of their gaming news from IGN or whatever, post pretty rarely, etc.

There's also a self-selection thing where people who bitch about anything tend to be much louder that people who sort of quietly agree. If GAF had a +1 or Like function or whatever, I think you'd probably see more of the silent group speaking up through that outlet.

You see it with stuff like the criticisms made against GTA4 versus the end-of-year reception, or MGS4's revote.

But this year, honestly, by far the loudest review feedback I saw on the site was people complaining that TLOU scores weren't high enough. The Polygon 7.5 was definitely the most active "MONEYHAT REVIEWS SUCK DEATH TO REVIEWERS" thread we had this year. So actually the result of this ballot lines up pretty well with the complaining we saw during the year.

That just means that the chorus of "all reviews suck" is even more true. If there are no outliers than if you disagree with one you might as well disagree with everyone.

Fantastic list and fantastic work guys! You really did an incredible job.

Very happy to see Pikmin 3 making the list ( even if it was a bit low >_>). Only nit pick I have is bioshock outranking GTA5 :p

Random question: I think the shooting in Bioshock is complete trash, should I bother with Bioshock Infinite? Also, I already had the story spoiled.

Well done GAF! I didn't make a list this year, but The Last of Us and BioShock Infinite would be #1 and #2 on my list if I did.

Great GOTY list. Can't complain about it at all.

Also I feel like my game taste is fucking weird, and these affinities kinda prove it lol.

You guys like some awesome games though. I think after this I realized I really need to play Ni No Kuni and Tales of Xillia. As well as finish SMT IV.

Shout outs to everyone who listed Soul Hackers, that game is fucking awesome!

The actual shooting is much improved. It took awhile before I started to see encounters I like though.

I enjoyed the shooting much more in Infinite than Bioshock on Hard, but the game's combat seems pretty divisive around these parts

and yet its #2 of the year lolol vocal minorities

I don't think you'll find the shooting any better--it feels a little bit better but they've removed alternate ammo and streamlined weapons a bit and Vigors are not really any more sophisticated than Plasmids. It does have a bit more mobility and level designs complement the combat a little better especially the few times that Skyhooks are used well and in most of the late game.

That being said, the joy of BioShock Infinite as an experience isn't coming from the factual things that happen in the story, but rather the overall feel of going through the world, discovering the audiologs, piecing together everything. I think the journey is more important than the destination.

Only 1 other person on my affinity list voted Dota 2. :(

But I guess that means it's all over everyone else's recommendations now. Enjoy! :)

You know, for as often as I hear the chorus of "All reviews suck" here, aggregate GAF opinion tends to line up with mainstream gaming site reviewer opinion almost 1:1.

Besides the other reasons mentioned above, one can take issue with the general quality of reviews or the tendency of most reviewers to do certain things- whether it be resorting to hyperbole too frequently, docking games for difficulty, or other common issues people have with reviews- while still generally agreeing with how they might order the best games of the year. I think Bioshock and TLoU were both overrated, and yet they're both on my list. Also, individuals might feel passionate opposition towards the reception of one or a couple games (like my own feelings towards GTAV or the critical reception of W101) while they still agree with the consensus on other titles. (TLoU, Mario and Zelda) This passionate opposition gets lost, though, when you factor that opinion in with thousands of other opinions, who might have also had such a response, but towards a different game instead. When you're dealing with games that virtually everyone played, you only need a small percentage, relatively speaking, to get onboard with a title.

Only bother if you have 10h of gaming hours to spare, no backlog, and don't mind setting the difficulty to easy when some encounters get to annoying. IMHO the shooting mechanics and the encounters aren't fun at all.

I thought Infinite had massively improved gunplay over the first game. It's really more about experimenting with Vigors though.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Its that high because a lot of people thought it was ok if not necessarily good or great. It's an entirely popularity and sales number vote.

It definitely benefitted from its "everybody played it" status, and for people looking to round out lists. Its placing in the High Quality and Passion Award speak a story I can more understand with the feedback.

Also, games from earlier in the year that have a late year end DLC or PC port get a lot more reinterest in GOTY votes. Capcom were fools to not make a Dark Arisen PC/PS4/XBone port if they were ever serious about GAF GOTY Lists! FOOLS.

I'm pretty damn happy to see Etrian Odyssey IV show up at #20 in the High Quality list. 11/10, Dancer/10

I feel like I have some weird taste in gaming now, but its kinda expected that my choices will never rank that high.

Also, a bit suprised that I'm only familiar with one person in my affinity list which is ohlawd, was expecting Mauricio_Magus but our list didn't overlap that much outside of a few games.

<3 and at number 1 to boot!

massive rec list but let's try

1. [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Adventure) = 20 points I bought this on launch but dislike 2D Zelda. I cleared the 3rd dungeon but I'm too lazy to figure out where to go next.
2. [NWU][3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Adventure) = 10 points Own. I would definitely have voted for this in 2010 but there were too many games this year for me so I couldn't dedicate the hours needed for this. 500 hours on the Wii version doesn't lie tho.
3. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Simulation) = 4 points, 2 honorable mentions About 90 hours played and would have been higher but new games started to show up late June
4. [PC] Civilization V: Brave New World (Strategy) = 4 points PC can't run it, want to play
5. [PS3] Disgaea Dimension 2 (RPG) = 3 points, 1 honorable mention Nope
6. [PSV] Tearaway (Platform) = 3 points, 1 honorable mention Only when I can get it at bomba prices physically.
7. [NWU] New Super Luigi U (Platform) = 3 points I lost all my lives at the first mini castle and called it quits here lmao. Not big on 2D platformers anyway
8. [3DS] Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Horror) = 2 points, 2 honorable mentions Got bored of this but I'll try to finish
9. [PC] Europa Universalis IV (Strategy) = 2 points My PC sux
10. [PS3][PSV][PC] Spelunky (Platform) = 1 point, 2 honorable mentions Got bored of demo. Don't wanna spend time until it "clicks"
11. [PS3][PSV] Dragon's Crown (Adventure) = 1 point, 1 honorable mention Nope
12. [NWU] NES Remix (Action) = 1 point Price is a bit too high for me
13. [360][PS3][NWU][PC] Batman: Arkham Origins (Adventure) = 1 point Great
14. [PS4] Resogun (Shooter) = 1 point Will play when I get a PS4
15. [PS3][PSV][PC] Hotline Miami (Action) = 1 point Unexpected but awesome. I bought a Vita mainly for Persona 4 Golden, Ys: Memories of Celceta and PS+ library (was never subbed before but I can't complain for $30) Well it turns out I didn't like most of the free games but Hotline Miami, HOTLINE MIAMI. Freakin' awesome.
16. [PC] The Stanley Parable (Adventure) = 1 point Want to play this on a good PC
17. [PC] Rogue Legacy (Platform) = 1 point Nope
18. [PS3] The Last of Us (Horror) = 0 points, 2 honorable mentions I own it, will probably never start.
19. [PSV] Soul Sacrifice (Adventure) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention Nah but at least I can get it free
20. [3DS] Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (RPG) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention Own but won't ever play
21. [3DS][PC] SteamWorld Dig (Platform) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention Own, will start eventually
22. [PS3] Tales of Xillia (RPG) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention OK game
23. [PS3][PSV][PC] Guacamelee! (Platform) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention Nope
24. [360][PS3][PC] Tomb Raider (Adventure) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention Good but I haven't finished it
25. [PC] Papers, Please (Simulation) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention Want to play on good PC
26. [360][PS3][PC] BioShock Infinite (FPS) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention Worst 2013 game I've played. Very unexceptional but dat beginning tho even my jaw dropped and that never happens.

Having skimmed through the stats now, the biggest loser from my perspective was Path of Exile. More people need to play this game asap.

The high quality list is solid, but a bit far off from my tastes. Even though the regular list aligns too much with review sites, I like the few specs of GAF's taste here and there like Tearaway, W101, MGR, etc. that many a site overlooked, and I think that makes it unique. (Tomb Raider's spot baffles me tho).

Thanks to everyone who organized/participated in this. It is always great to see this data, and the recommended list/persona affinity are great stuff to have in mind as well.

How is everyone getting the list of the 10 people who voted most like them? I'm not getting this whole affinity list thing...

The feel of shooting in Infinite is only marginally improved over the originals and the game still features a number of bullet sponge type enemies.

That said, I really enjoy the BioShock mix of guns and powers, and Infinite brings a nice verticality to the table that was lacking in the original 2. Skyhook encounters are the highlight of the game and the real issue I have with the game is that there weren't more of them, as the non-Skyhook encounters tend to be more hit-or-miss. It's a fun FPS if you engage it on its terms and don't play it guns only. It's more effective, more fun, and less frustrating.

Lastly, don't go melee if you want a balanced game. It breaks the game in half with the right mix of upgrades and gear, and you can pretty much spam charge to kill everything on the screen repeatedly.

This year and 2010 were the only years I've agreed with GAF's GotY. Well deserved for The Last of Us. Game of the Gen for me as well.

Ahh the game that was destined to win GAFs GOTY award since its reveal, and here we are now celebrated that games achievement. Glad the right game won.

TLOU!

Hah, my top 15 recommended is pretty funny/interesting. Some stuff on here I've already played/beaten/enjoyed, but I just didn't end up giving them a vote (like MGR, Rayman Legends and New Super Luigi U). You know, I believe I own all NA released Fire Emblem games...and I haven't finished a single one. I get like a few maps in and lose interest for some reason. I'm more of a Matsuno guy when it comes to strategy/tactical RPGs (and I'll always have a soft spot/love for Vandal Hearts). I should probably just pick one of those FE games and stick with it because I know I'll dig 'em as soon as I find a groove with one of them.

I bought The Last of Us near launch because of all the survival horror-like talk ...and I sort of stopped playing before even finishing the first season. I was really harsh on the game at the time and I think I just wasn't in the mood for a "AAA" game. There's still some things that REALLY turn me off about it (like the "invisible" AI characters not being seen by the Clickers), but I'd like to give it another shot, at some point. I think I get frustrated when I play games that are labeled/talked-up as "the right way to do survival horror" or a "return to survival horror" because it's a genre I have a lot of love/nostalgia for (particularly because of school Resident Evil) and I'm still waiting for a proper return to the formula or at least a game to do the genre/formula justice. It's like, some of the stuff I see and play in a lot of these so called "survival horror" games works for me, but then I see checkpoint systems, chapter/stage select menus, and other small things and it just all falls apart for me. It's like pseudo survival horror-elements. Oh well.

Oh, and lol at Fifa 14 getting recommended. Wtf!

That will teach me to read the allowed games doc next time. >_>

Anyway, my stats and affinity
Sgt.Pepper
50% Multi, 16.66667% Nintendo, 33.33333% PC

1. Dota 2 - 4 points
2. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies - 3 points
3. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 3 points
4. DISALLOWED (La-Mulana)
5. Skullgirls - 2 points
6. Tomb Raider - 2 points
7. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - 1 point
2012. Dark Souls

I recognize most, except the first one and last one.

thanks for the afford, but the genre awards are just.. lol?

btw.: last year, Assassin's Creed III was an action game.
this year Assassin's Creed IV is an adventure game.

gta4 wasn't in the adventure game list either in 2008.

SMT4 not even in the Top 20? *pushes over a magazine rack*

You're telling me

Glad to see Tearaway up there, though.

Only other thing I'd add this year is that I've played 3 hours of Ryse and although it was everything I expected it to be, I still think it was better than Tomb Raider, if for having slightly more entertaining combat alone.

Speaking of better FPSs with powers and alt fire stuff, more people should play Darkness 2, Bulletstorm, and Shadow Warrior.

I own Shadow Warrior but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Was going to pick up Bulletstorm but decided to wait based on the GFWL issue. How do those games handle their level design? Are the mostly horizontal affairs or do the firefights make good use of the y-axis as well? It's something I've come to realize I really enjoy, not just from BioShock but from my preference for Halo's sandbox fights as well.
