Thanks for all the work OP!

Congrats to the Last of us.

Good list, no Metro in the top 20 makes me sad though.

Nice work, GAF.

Major, major kudos to Cheese and the others who do the heavy lifting. Wow. Your attention to detail makes this a true players' choice vote for GOTY. Thank you!

Great work on the OP so thank you for that. I don't agree with the list but it doesn't matter. I knew the results before it even began. However, I'm surprised at how little love Forza, Dead Rising, and Killer Instinct got. Also, I've just about 100%'d Assassin's Creed 4 and that game is now my goty if I could revote. Would have thought it would be higher on the list. What an awesome experience. One day I'd like to play the Last of Us.

Consider me

shocked that Infinite came in #2, considering all the vocal detractors. Just re-enforces the #1 rule of the internet: Factions speak louder than herds.

All that last minute support for Wonderful 101 got on the list...thank you based GAF

I think I know two people on this affinity list, thats what happens when you only vote for five games instead of a set of ten

Good job everyone, and a good year for video games

I've been recommended this game called The Last of Us, is it any good?

Now seriously, I wonder how many people that didn't vote for it have it as their number 1 recommended game. I suppose it must be close to 100%.

717 people voted for The Last of Us out of 1165 valid ballots.
Of the remaining 448 people who didn't vote for The Last of Us, it was the number 1 recommendation for 250, or 55.8% of them.

Tearaway at #9! Nice to see. AAA multiplats winning out over quirky PC stuff as far as top 10 honors go, but that's to be expected. Plenty of good games large and small, 2013 was a fun year.

Thanks timetokill and Cheesemeister for all the work and delicious data to pour over. Thread was a great read this year, came back to it often. Shoutout to my affinity crew, going to try and get to the stuff on your lists that I didn't get a chance to/didn't put enough time in. Riight after this Europa Universalis game starts winding down and I get my Spelunky daily challenge in..

Wow, I can't believe Tearaway made it into the top 10! It is great. Thanks for doing this!

Number 5 here.

1. [360][PS3][PC] BioShock Infinite (FPS) = 7 points, 1 honorable mention Hilarious, BInfinite was a huge disappointment for me.
2. [PSV] Persona 4 Golden (RPG) = 6 points I've played P4 before, and I think it's perfect the way it is.
3. [NWU] Super Mario 3D World (Platform) = 6 points Sure I guess
4. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Simulation) = 6 points Hrmm, I have no point of reference for this game. I could love it or loathe it.
5. [PS3] The Last of Us (Horror) = 5 points, 1 honorable mention Not my jam.
6. [NWU][3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Adventure) = 5 points I've always wanted to get into Monster Hunter, but the means have always escaped me. (I don't think playing it on the 3DS is the solution, I don't think the slide pad is very good for action type games and the screen's too small)
7. [PS3][PC] Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (MMO) = 4 points I've left MMOs for good.
8. [PC] Papers, Please (Simulation) = 4 points Big maybe.
9. [PS3][PSV][PC] Guacamelee! (Platform) = 3 points Forgot to buy it during Steam Sales, stupid me.
10. [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (RPG) = 2 points, 1 honorable mention I think I'll seriously look into getting this after seeing it on a couple of lists of people I recognize. Unfortunately Bravely Default comes soon so it'll have to wait.

444 people had The Last of Us recommended to them. 56% of them got it recommended as their #1. 76% in the top 3.

Edit: I just saw Cheesemeister also answering this question. So there are 4 people that voted in this GAF GOTY thing that either didn't vote for TLoU and didn't have it recommended to them. I think they will be the next mods.

Bioshock Infinite was that high? Thank goodness LoU beat it.
While I was against Bioshock 1 I understood its significance and acknowledged its numerous awards. Infinite on the other hand has nothing to offer especially as we see the years go by. Its a game destined to be forgotten.

Spill the beans JC, what were the remaining mystery 5?

We're about to find out, who's next in the RoyalGAF Rumble, 3...2...1...*honk*

OMG ITS...ITS
Bioshock, Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Pikmin 3, Ace Attorney Dual Destines in some kind of order, maybe Guacamelee, Runner2, or Volgarr

My top 10 recommendations:

1. BioShock Infinite Played it. Dind't like it.
2. Super Mario 3D World Will definitely buy once I get a Wii U
3. Guacamelee! Played it, but missed my top 10
4. Pokémon X/Y Not interested
5. Dragon's Crown Played it. Dind't like it.
6. Pikmin 3 Will definitely buy once I get a Wii U
7. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Played it, but missed my top 10
8. Gone Home Played it, but missed my top 10
9. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Not interested
10. Fire Emblem Awakening Not interested

My most wanted game from last year is SMT IV. It's not even in my top 30 rec list, though ;_;

Excellent work on the thread, guys. It's the only GOTY I care about.

Fun to be a part of the voting this year rather than lurking. Even got one of my quotes used, nice.

Not surprised that The Last of Us won, but the margin was so wide. I will have to get around to playing it, probably as soon as the inevitable PS4 version comes out.

I got some really high affinities this year compared to last year. Before my wolfpack only contained 1 member, now there are 11.

One of the more ho-hum top-20 lists I can remember from GAF. Bummer. Pretty much in line with just about every mainstream gaming site. No big surprises, risks, or standouts. All I can assume is that there were so many fantastic off-the-beaten-path non-AAA games that they all ended up stealing votes from one another, leaving just the "big guys" at the top.

Great job to our esteemed talliers/statisticians. This GOTY list continues to be the one of the only ones I care about.

Some awesome recommendations from my affinity list, though. Time for me to check out Device 6, The Entertainment, and Risk of Rain! Cheers, fellow travelers:

op_ivy

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
not a single one of my picks made top 20. time to pack it up

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Fellow tastemakers who I do not recognise as our paths cross rarely, but who in turn chose wisely (those with Dark Arisen on their list get special treatment):

This recommendations list is interesting:
1. [360][PS3] Grand Theft Auto V (Adventure) = Its on the sideboard, I cant bring myself to play it through apathy :/
2. [360][PS3][PC] BioShock Infinite (FPS) = Played, an interactive tour of an interesting sky city concept and then little to nothing else of value around that.
3. [PS3][PSV][PC] Guacamelee! (Platform) = Its downloaded and ready on my Vita, just... man. Too many Vita games.
4. [NWU] Super Mario 3D World (Platform) = Will get round to it when I pick up that bargain bin WiiU.
5. [PSV] Persona 4 Golden (RPG) = Not time for me to replay Persona 4 yet.
6. [3DS] Fire Emblem Awakening (RPG) = On my list to get around to now I have a 3DS.
7. [360][PS3][PC] Rocksmith 2014 (Rhythm) = I am no music, I no comprende.
8. [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Adventure) = The graphics honestly put me off too much. I'm sure it is a great time but just... I'm almost done with Zelda forever. I feel nothing.
9. [PS3] Tales of Xillia (RPG) = u wot m8
10. [360][PS3][PC] Tomb Raider (Adventure) = Played, honestly pretty good, even if Luddington's fake brit gave me inner rage

Wonderful 101 not making my top ten recommendations is the beginning of the Platinum Bro Alliance divide. Clearly I should skip it.

Wow The Last of Us ruled by a massive number. It was pretty obvious it would win, but that's really massive.
Congratulations!
I still haven't played the game and I'm really not that interested in it really, but maybe I'll buy it someday on my wife's brother's PS3.

Surprised about Bioshock getting so high.

Good to see games like Zelda: ALBW, Fire Emblem, Tearaway, TW101 and MGR getting relatively high.

I voted wrong about Brothers. I wrote "Two Brothers" as its name, which is a different game.. oh well, at least it affect the list in any way.

Surprised that smaller PC indie games weren't ranked higher. Would've expected more votes for stuff like Gunpoint and Gone Home considering how cheap and readily available they are when compared to Wii U games. It's still a predictable list of big AAA games overall which is fine. The only problem is that Dota 2 isn't higher. :p
A bit surprising indeed, but I think people don't vote small indie titles as easily as AAA games. I think a big factor is that you play AAA games usually for several days whereas most indie games you can beat within a day or 2. Even if that AAA game you play isn't that high quality, it leaves a lasting memory to you far easier than that indie game even if it's very high quality. And of course, the graphics, the voice acting and such things make an impression quite easily even if the game is otherwise mediocre.

This isn't any attempt to shit on AAA games of course, but just saying I think at least that indie games are harder to really consider as GOTY material.

Two games made by a small independent teams were neck-and-neck for the GOTY vote last year.

Well I guess not every rumble has surprise entries but I'll take the strong lineup.

SMT4 not even in the Top 20? *pushes over a magazine rack*

That was my biggest disappointment from the list. I knew it wouldn't win (even though I did my part and I think it was probably the best game in the last 15 years), but I thought it could at least make into the lower reaches of the Top 10, or at least somewhere just outside that.

Voters fucked up on this one.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Tearaway are AAA? Those are in the top 10. Are you sure you are not just bothered there not enough "indie" games there?

Maybe it would've done better had it been released in Europe or if the 3DS were region-free.

Great list- just like every other year thrown up a lot of surprises and unknowns that I now need to try for myself, Metal Gear Rising in particular, much higher than I wouldve predicted.

What a fantastic gen it's been.

All this list tells me, is that I need to start playing more games that came out in 2013. I am still trying to finish the games that came out in 2011 and 2012.

Consensus GotY is a popularity contest. A better metric would be the High Quality award, of which SMT4 made 11.

Great work from everyone involved! 2013 was a great year for games, no matter how you look at it. My beloved Nintendo had it rough and will continue to in the coming year(s), but you can't deny the quality of their output.

Fair enough. Mostly just surprisingly unsurprised by the list overall. Really like the new IP list, though. I wish the final list looked more like that.

It isn't surprising that safe bets will be near the top. They were safe bets even before release so people bought them expecting quality and got that to some extent. Journey and Walking Dead doing so well was surprising but outside of that anomaly, when you roll all of GAF together it isn't all that different to most other places.

Hi, folks!

3. [360][XB1][PS3][PSV][PS4][NWU][PC] Rayman Legends (Platform) = 5 points

8. [PS3][PC] Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut (Horror) = 2 points
9. [PS3][PSV][PC] Guacamelee! (Platform) = 2 points

12. [NWU][3DS][PC] Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure (Puzzle) = 1 point

14. [PSV] Tearaway (Platform) = 1 point
15. [360][PS3][PS4][PC] Contrast (Puzzle) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention

I'll beat Fire Emblem, eventually. :/ Also I may have to rethink Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, as I couldn't seem to continue the series after the second game and I couldn't get into the demo for DD. Maybe it'll click with me.

once again GAF's #1 GOTY aligns with my tastes (2010 being the exception) :)

I was surprised to see Bioshock Infinite #2, i would have thought Zelda would have had it.

I'm happy to see tearaway on the list though. I need to get to Tomb Raider soon. Sounds like a fun game

And my affinity pairing:

My highest recommended game was ALBW, which is definitely going to be my next game (if Resident Evil: Outbreak isn't lol). I would have played if it I had the time.

GOTY for The Last of Us is very well deserved! I'm not going to lie, I'd have been disappointed in everyone here if Bioshock Infinite had won.

Also d00d3n you're my GOTY bro. I'm not sure what that means going forward but you've got pretty good taste.
