VITA NEW MODEL Announced with built in 1GB memory!!

Oh, because the resolution is higher?

For games, no, it's not. Contrast ratio and motion resolution is still much MUCH worse on the iPad 3.
No. Because the colour saturation on Vita is ridiculous. The iPad's colours are much more natural. It also has flaws - blotchy marks in dark scenes and a green tinge to certain greys. But it's mostly because the Vita is too bright at its lowest setting.

I've been going on about it since I bought one.

I was very excited to hear about a Pink Vita, but only pink on the back... no thank you!

THIS is how you do pink!

Don't understand why people would prefer LED/LCD to OLED.

Such a big difference in black levels it's not even funny.

Only negative is Mura effect and it is barely visible except in a completely dark room (which is bad for your eyes anyway!)

I knew they would downgrade the screen. Called it before.

This means I have to find an old Vita before they fetch premium prices I'm sure. 1gb for saves is nothing big of a bonus

I've yet to encounter these with any OLED products and I've used them heavily. The same issues were possible with CRTs and plasma displays.

LCDs are indeed the most reliable in the sense that very little can go wrong...but that's akin to sticking with a Toyota Camry when you could be driving a much nicer, higher performance car. It works, it's reliable, it's popular, but it does nothing particularly well outside of functioning. LCDs simply are not well suited towards gaming and require an obscene number of tricks and processing techniques to overcome its flaws. Strobing backlights, inserting black frames, locally dimming each pixel (something that's disappearing due to cost), etc. LCDs, by nature, are flawed displays.

I hate the fact that I'm stuck with one on my desk and almost always game on my Pioneer Kuro instead. Seeing the two running games simultaneously would be a real eye opener for most people, I think. The difference is more significant than you'd imagine when seeing them in separate environments.

Good for you that you have yet to encounter these problems i guess, but within my experience of owning 3 oled display and watching other people with their phones i see these problems everywhere...
I'm not even "scared" of these problems and i know very well the differences in IQ since like you I own a Kuro (4280XD) which is fucking beautiful and i will cry the day i have to replace it but these days i will choose any decent LCD over a faulty OLED screen.

I'm fine with a screen downgrade if it's cheaper. I like the color options too.

Just need some games. Any new software announced at the conference?

I wonder if they'll really launch another vita SKU in the US

Guys, I'm thinking of cancelling my PS4 preorder and buying this new Vita in pretty white instead. Both don't have games I want but at least the Vita is pretty and i can play it in my bed!

Am I insane?

No, it IS automatically bad. Color reproduction doesn't mean shit when it can't handle proper black levels and smears in motion. ALL LCDs suffer from this problem. It's inherent in the design and no amount of pixels or color accuracy will solve it.

It's a matter ot taste in that case. Contrast ratio is over-rated in my opinion, I'd much rather rich, accurate colours, and motion-blur is good enough to be a non-issue for me in good screens. I guess the proof will be in the pudding when it comes out.

I simply cannot understand comments like this. In what fantasy world do you live in where LCD is preferable?

Clearly not your fantasy.

I prefer handheld screens where I can see the structure of the screen. Different tastes. Vita OLED screen is awesome but I would like and LCD screen for a second system...PS1 and PSP content will look better on it as well.

Colors look good to me, especially with the latest firmware. There is a green tint at some viewing angles, but it's not an issue. The iPad has some issues with colors being too yellow at certain angles too, with some burn in this is mostly fixed though.

I'd say modern panels are pretty good. I've yet to see anything that has completely blown me away recently or make me point and laugh at it.

There are plenty of <1GB games on PSN. And it's enough for saves, so people can stop claiming the "true" cost of the console is $300 because they're absolutely forced to buy a $100 memory card just to play the physical games they have.

Wait, the save files aren't stored in the game cartridges like the 3DS? Do we really need a memory card just to save?

If true, why would they choose to go with something like this instead of internal cartridge save files? o.O

I'm not talking about viewing angles - the green tint is apparent when displaying certain dark greys at any angle.

This has been enhanced, but hints of that green is what I can see during many grey scenes.

I'll eventually pick up a 64GB card, since my 32 already can't fit all my games. Shame that the system update didn't include video out, since that would have definitely made me upgrade.

Is the hidden port on the new model? I always felt that was a Kutaragi thing, similar to the IR sensor on the PSP.

Well, I'm excited to see one in person at least. Hope the screen ends up surprising me because I wouldn't mind buying a new Vita for the improved battery life.

Too bad it seems they're still gonna use the same types of analog sticks! Was hoping for something closer to the ds4.
Yeah they're really small though - using that dimpled shape of the DS4 sticks might not be effective at this size. I'm hoping they've given them a little more resistance.

Thank you for posting fellow GAFfer.

That LCD is a shame. I'm glad I have my Vita the way it is, because, to me the screen is one of my favorite things in the Vita. This is coming from someone that before the Vita, my last portable gaming was a Silver Game Boy Pocket back in the day, so this screen instead of a OLED might make a difference for me.

I didn't really like how the new Vita model looked at first, but now I think it's more inline with the UI so it kind of makes sense.

Like the whole thing seems to match the Vita's icons, specifically.

LCD? Crap, have to buy the OLED version fast before it runs out.

Anyone think this will continue to drop down the price of the current Vita? I'm planning on buying a handheld this year and Vita is my top choice because of the PS4 integration. I really like the OLED screen of the current vita so this new version is the version I'm not getting.

Not taking any chances and pulling the trigger on The Walking Dead bundle for dat OLED. Fuck, this is a $200 purchase I really didn't need right now.

The old PSP has video-out yet the Vita doesn't, just because they don't want you connecting it to your monitor or TV to replace their precious home consoles with or some other stupid reason. It is simply moronic and a practice I will never ever support. Always go for maximum choice and openness. This crap only makes it harder for video review sites, let's-players and speedrunners. Buzz off, Sony. And for that matter, buzz off, Nintendo (there are capture devices available; they're ridiculously expensive, though).

I think this is the smarter move Sony made today in hardware announcements, especially if it'll give them the option to send down the price a bit more if they need to sooner rather than later. It's too bad their other announcement pretty much killed the chance of them just putting an HDMI port on the system though.

Vita TV would be useless if Vita has video out.

Exactly. This functionality used to be built in. Now they'll charge you a hundred bucks for it. It's money-grubbing extortion and deserves to be called out for it. It's simply taking functionality and choice away from the consumer, only to later charge a ridiculous price for the exact same function. This is the stuff a multi-national's CEO's dreams are made of and it leaves an extremely bitter aftertaste.

I'm actually non-plussed about the new model being thinner, too... Having held the Vita in my hands, it actually feels nice to grip, especially when playing on the commute. My major complaint with it has less to do with its width and ultimately more to just its size - a price I'm willing to pay for that gorgeous screen and two sticks!

Overall, still don't regret my recent purchase with the announced price drop (and the secret $10 discount that was going on at Future Shop, as well) - judging from what I'm seeing here, I've got the model that fits me a bit better and looks a little nicer.

So the screen is going to be much worse, right? This technology, if it's what I think it is (cheaper LCD), is much worse than OLED.

It is a shame this is marked as an evolution of the Vita SKU instead of a budget model.
Every PSP model made it better, with no catches.

Same memory card configuration. Damnit.

They're not going to switch to MicroSD (as much as it makes sense). These memory cards exist to prevent piracy (I'm willing to be they're using a non-standard file system in addition them being non-standard cards).
