Square Enix confirms new Legacy of Kain game (Nosgoth, multiplayer, not CD/not at E3)

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Who the fuck wanted this?

The shareholders? They want mobile/MMO titles, SE rooted around in their IP cupboard and bolted this one onto some piece of shit they had lying around. Now let us never speak of it again.

What cross-genre IP shoehorning has ever actually been financially successful?

I can name a lot that weren't:

Halo Wars
XCom Interceptor
Command and Conquer Renegade
Xcom Enforcer

Most of those games you listed there were just not good or in the case of Halo Wars (which I actually kind of liked) trying to bring a genre to a platform that it's less than ideal for (I guess you'll be laughing when this is announced to be a console MOBA)

it was in development for quite a while and it was originally a single player game + multiplayer but got pruned back to be multiplayer-only. it is also slated for console downloadable services.

Hey stump, is CD working on a real reboot? Or is this the only LoK that we'll have?

Goddammit. I want a new LoK game so fucking much but not like this. What is great about those games is the universe. I want a game where I can run around and delve deeper into the lore. This could be a great game and I have no problem with them doing this in addition to a sp game, but I hope this isnt all they are doing with the license.

They explicitly say that Crystal Dynamics is not working on the franchise.

CD's second game is a new IP.

So they take a franchise known SPECIFICALLY for its writing, storytelling and characters...and make it into a multiplayer game.

Thanks, Square. Thanks for nothing. Tony Jay would be ashamed of you. :/

So this is what Kain had in mind... Instead of choosing between a new traditional LoK game and no game at all, we have a third option. The coin truly landed on its edge. Damn you Kain, damn you for all eternity!

Replace Kain with Square Enix.

MOBAs, MMOs, social games. The future of gaming. Be prepared.

but seriously, the future is bleak. It's all the fault of the people, because this has all been made valid. Crappy social games, MOBAs, and MMOs all rake in enough money year after year after year that this becomes a very valid way for gaming to go.
It feels like creativity just gets sucked out of everything, and if they manage to find even an ounce, they planet their feet and strip mine the Earth.

In some ways it's just me being cynical, but there's most certainly a grain of truth in there.

lol. I will say that I don't believe we'll see another new MMO from SE for a good while, at least.

Kain: No! This CAN'T be the way!

Raziel: You are lost in a maze of moral relativism, Kain. These apparitions and portents... What game are you playing now?

Kain: DOTA 2, it's hot right now. I think you should join me so we could jump on that bandwagon. If others can do it, we can do it too!

Raziel: Your arrogance is boundless, Kain.

Can they make it like Destiny if they're going to make it a multiplayer game? Or some kind of brawler? Anything but a Moba. :(

To translate the OP into a form that non Legacy of Kain fans may understand, its a bit like this:

Valve have confirmed that Half-Life 3 is a cooking simulator game set in the Half-Life universe.

A statement from Valve's Gabe Newell was sent to Eurogamer following the publication of the below report.

"We're aware that the community has been actively discussing rumours about a game currently in development called Half-Life 3, after it was referenced in AMD's Crossfire Application Profile and the Steam database last week. While we can confirm that this game exists, is in active development and is set in the same universe as the Half-Life games, it's not a traditional or even non-cooking simulator experience.

"Given the AMD and Steam leaks, it feels weird to have a bunch of info out there and we don't want the community to get the wrong idea, especially as the game won't be at this year's E3.

"We can also tell you that Half-Life 3 is not being developed by the original Half-Life team, nor are they working on a Half-Life game right now and while our game is set in the world of Half-Life, it's very much on a separate, cooking-simulator branch than the Half-Life and Portal series.

"Sorry to be so cagey. There will be an official announcement in due course when we'll reveal Half-Life 3 properly, so we can't go into tons of detail just at the moment. Everyone at Valve is really excited by the game and we're all looking forward to lifting the veil of secrecy in the future.”

"The community should not be thinking of Half-Life 3 in terms of a non-cooking simulator experience.”

Taking a franchise that is known for its legendarily strong single-player narrative-driven carefully-paced experiences - making the fans wait ten years - and announcing its coming back in action MOBA form! is like Valve announcing Half-Life 3 is their take on Cooking Mama.

From the evidence around the internet, and some information from a few sources, I pretty much knew this was the case. Still, its sad to see it confirmed.

Just to be clear, they haven't actually said this would be a MOBA right? We're just making a safe assumption based on how a bunch of companies are trying to make MOBAs right now?

A better translation would be

Fans indifferent to Half Life Cooking simulator

"All had already lost interest after valve was sold to EA 10 years prior and all the people that were involved with the making of, or the good parts of, the Half Life series had left the company."

The LoK series is something better left untouched at this point since I don't trust anyone that would be able to work on it to do a good job. I am actually happy that this is what the game is instead of some reboot that takes the very soul of the series away.

Wow SE, this is awesome.

I've been waiting for this game my whole life.

After all this bullshit this gen you finally did something right.

Day fucking one.

You have any idea how hard you have to work to announce a LoC game that I DON'T want?
This feels like one of those really poor 'test the water' ideas. 'Hey maybe if lots of people who don't love LoC buy this, we can re-visit a REAL installment'

:p

I see it now.

Square Prez: We need new ideas to reverse our fortunes.
Square Exec: How about we mine some of those IP's we got?
Square Prez: Even easier, what do we got?
Square Exec: There is this thing called Legacy of Kain that was pretty popular.
Square Prez: I like it, get on it!
Square Exec: It's known for it's amazing story.
Square Prez: Fuck me, we don't know how to do those anymore, turn it into a MOBA, problem solved.
Square Exec: Your a genius sir. I love you.
Square Prez: I know. Have another belt.

Could also just be a different kind of multiplayer game.

Its funny because the other game that has both AMD and Steam leaks is Halo 3.

Would be mind blowing to see confirmation of that title.

I don't get it, Why not just make a new universe instead of Nosgoth?

Shareholders are allergic to new IPs.

This is like the saddest vg news I've ever, ever, ever seen. I thought I never would have to say this but I hope the studio doing this gets the axe and get relocated or that the game is so shitty that it's below SE looow standards enough to cancel it. Come on.
