I hope we do get Versus and i personally don't want Versus as FF XV. That's because i want FF XV by Hiroyuki Itou otherwise i don't think there is anyone left to lead a brand new FF beside Itou and to some extent Nomura.Your gut is telling the truth. I think it's pretty obvious that FFXV will be there.

What stops this hypothetical Itou Final Fantasy from being Final Fantasy XVI? I am curious as to why instead of having Versus XIII and XV we have Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XVI. The only difference is that one game moves forward a single number while the other game gets a huge boost in sales.

I doubt this hypothetical Itou game that your so convinced he's directing is far along anyways. What's the problem with announcing Versus as XV this year and next year they announce XVI. Your complaining about a number. A number that won't affect this imaginary game Itou is developing. There are more pros to this then any con people can come up with.
I'm looking the their registered trademarks for the last year, and I don't see any of that.

Hashimoto specially said "New Final Fantasy" and that was after the Agni's Philosophy tech demo. I still don't believe in the rumor of XV = Versus but come E3, we might finally know the truth.
As for Itou, he is one of my favorite game director so it is sad to see him barely getting any AAA work done. If we go with the theory of a new FF announcement at E3, we get FF XV using Agni's Philosophy engine at E3 along with the acknowledgement that Versus XIII is all well and in development. That's what i am looking forward to. I don't want to see FF XV = Versus being shown at E3.
But if it's the only way we see Versus, than i accept it, lol.

The guy directed several of the best selling FF games, and is the one of the people most responsible for the series' core gameplay. He took over directing FFXII. He's next up for a big project.
It literally makes zero logical sense that he's doing nothing. There's not even a rational scenario where this is the case. If anyone has a reasonable explanation, I've yet to hear it.
Hashimoto never said anything about "new", he just said they were "preparing for development of a Final Fantasy title." Though it would be weird to say they were "preparing" in reference to Versus, assuming they were developing it on PS4 for a while.

He's a game designer first and foremost, not so much a director or producer. He is interested in game design concepts and making fun things. In the last 5 years or so, Square Enix has gone through some very difficulty times in terms of finding their footing in the current generation. Much of the manpower required to produce large scale console games have been diverted into titles which were announced long before they were ready, and also into fixing the embarrassment that is FFXIV. It doesn't leave many resources for original IPs, or expanding production on creative ideas which are being proposed to the management. Dozens of games in various stages of development have been scrapped during this period of time.
Consider all that, and you have a rational scenario where someone like Itou (and he's not the only one) could be going to work every day, coming up with ideas or pre-production plans for a myriad number of projects, and never getting any of them off the ground. Effectively doing "nothing" in terms of meaningful output.

Looking forward to this......but with low expectations.
I don't think anyone thinks mainline entries in the FF series are going to be canceled, and there's a pretty good chance he's working on it in some capacity (probably battle system designer or director). It's true, they said things got canceled. But I don't think that really applies to mainline FF games.
And working on games and then having the game get canceled isn't doing nothing. People seem to actually be believing that he's working on iOS stuff exclusively, or is the janitor now. It blows my mind.
It seems far more rational to think that whatever he's working on just isn't ready yet, and has probably been delayed because of XIV.

Well, believe whatever you want. But I speak in good faith when I tell you that you probably shouldn't get your hopes up, because there's good reason to believe that Itou really isn't working on anything of note in recent years, and he probably isn't helming some huge awesome project which is just waiting to be "ready" right now.

AP isn't a game. Who at SE is available right now to work on such a large scale project? Toriyama and his team might be very early in concept phase for their next FF, but that's it.

I am not saying what you want is wrong it's just highly improbable. BTW that's not what Hashimoto said. He never uttered the words "New Final Fantasy". He said:
"We are preparing developments for a Final Fantasy title. Please, please be excited for E3 this year."
If he's not working on the next mainline FF game, then it would be a new director right? That would be pretty interesting.

It looks interesting, but still way too many crystal/flowery bullshit elements in it. It's not the modern fantasy that they absolutely nailed in aesthetic/atmosphere for Versus.
You are assuming that Square Enix still operates like they did in the late 90s and early 00s, where they have 3-4 numbered FF games in planning at the same time with production plans spanning 5-6 years. Based on what we know about the company now, I think it is safer and more realistic to think otherwise. Let's just say, I believe right now, no one knows who will direct FFXVI or what FFXVI even is, not even anyone in Square Enix.

In the "出願人／書換申請者／権利者／名義人" field I put in "株式会社スクウェア・エニックス" and in the "出願日／書換登録申請日／国際登録日（事後指定日）" field I put in "20130101:" to get all results from Jan 1 2013 onwards. "20120101:" will get you all the results from Jan 1 2012 onwards, or you can put the ":" before the date instead to get results before that date.
