Back in middle school/early high school days, my friends and I used to skip school to go to one of their houses and play Halo CE splitscreen on his big screen TV. Damn those were fun days.

I had a ps2 myself (since its launch) and didn't own an xbox till 2004 (just before halo 2 came out).

But yeah, if it wasn't for the xbox, I'd probably be among the people saying that this upcoming gen doesn't look like the same leap as the previous one. Looks like the same leap to me as it was from the first xbox's 720p/1080i games to 360's launch games.

What a fantastic game. As close to perfection as a stealth game could be. It absolutely blew my mind how amazing this looked on the Xbox when it came out. Just a masterpiece in stealth game design.

Ditto, I remember playing that game in my college dorm on my 19" CRT, and rotating the camera in amazement that they were able to squeeze those visuals out of the console. The gameplay was excellent as well - back in a time when they didn't compromise game mechanics for mass appeal and popularity.

As much as I loved my PS2, I always conceded that Xbox always had the best versions of multiplat games (Could say the same for this gen as well).....graphics were damn good

Yeah, I remember when there was a big deal surrounding the graphical upgrades to GTA. The one I can think of is Tommy's jacket swaying in the breeze.

Streamed Conker for almost 2 hours tonight, the game still looks amazing. Never got into it back in the day.

Never touched the Conker SP myself. Spent a lot of time on the MP though. Was fun.

Also, it became a ritual at our Halo lan parties to fill our breaks with the Fusion Frenzy demo. Never did buy the full game ha.

Did anyone else have the Xbox Exhibition Vol. 2 disk? I remember the "demo" of Capcom vs SNK 2 being essentially the full game (I think the only limitation was that you couldn't save and the online play wasn't in there). I played so much CvS2 off of that disk.

God I remember downloading the GameSpy client to play online. It was unstable as hell but I thought it was the COOLEST thing ever. Online gaming on a console was a COMPLETELY foreign concept to me at the time.

Blood Gulch man, Blood Gulch...

Me and a friend were just talking about Blood Gulch while playing Reach. Such a good map.

I haven't seen an Alan Wake "Only on Xbox" avatar posted yet... if someone makes one please PM me the link. I'd definitely snag an Alan Wake avatar any day.

One of my favorite games ever and this along with Halo, Gunvalkyrie, Soul Calibur II, Shaolin Monks, Morrowind, Ninja Gaiden and Shenmue II defined the console for me back in the day. Good times.

Countless hours on Halo CE and Halo 2 with my friends in grade school.

Also lots of nostalgia for my green xbox, BRUTE FORCE, Ninja Gaiden, Counter Strike on Xbox, Battlefield 2 and freaking Gauntlet.

Miss that old green machine.

Any Arx Fatalis fans?

Loved this RPG. Played it more than Morrowind. What appealed to me was that it was a legitimate dungeon crawler, you spent the whole game underground and had to forage items to survive. Some food items you would have to wait and find fire for to eat. Combat was also awesome, and you could cast some killer magical spells. Item customization was pretty deep also. Fantastic game, if not horribly underrated as well.

Anyone else play Toejam and Earl 3 in here? I thought that game was rad and stupid as hell at the time. Still holds up graphically imo.

J Allard was so fucking cool. I wish they brought him back for the Nextbox.

Picture it:

You see like an old man with tattered clothes, long gray hair, and an unkempt gray beard walk up on the stage; "8 years...." he says; then he rips off his robe, hair and beard to reveal J Allard in some kind of hipster clothing underneath. "But the future...begins...now."

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
To be honest, Xbox 1 may be my least favorite console out of all the ones I own. Panzer Dragoon Orta was utterly brilliant, and I also liked JSRF, Ninja Gaiden, Outrun 2 (haven't tried Shenmue 2 yet). Yeah, as a box for niche SEGA games it was cool... As well as the novelty of playing the fighting games online. But being a big RPG guy who hates Star Wars, there was hardly anything for me compared to the Cube and especially the PS2...

Xbox 1 was the first system that I needed to return (had a faulty disc drive that stopped reading the day I bought SFAC and shortly after discovering the wonder that was Third Strike :( ), thankfully it was only a month after I bought it and was still under warranty. In all my years of buying consoles, I've only had one other system that I had to send in for repairs, take a wild guess what that one was :p

Cool OP, though I'm surprised you left out Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, both of those were really big coups for MS and what really sold me on a 360.

If the 3rd Xbox got all those niche SEGA titles along with the moneyhatted Japanese exclusives of the early 360 days, we'd be on to something. But I highly doubt this will be the case :(

Fond memories of visiting planets and vanquishing hordes of alien insects with Sho and Yanqqin. Had a pretty decent story and RPG elements too.

I remember feeling pretty overwhelmed by all the enemies. You had a sword for close range fighting and a gun for long range attacks. Plus, Sho could channel Neo-Psionic magic which you could upgrade to unleash devastating aoe destruction.

Fun game. It's a shame Koei shafted MS and released the sequel on PS2 only, due to low sales of this first game. The second one is vastly superior in graphics and gameplay, but this one still has that xbox charm, and that's all that matters.

I loved the smell of the machine out of the box and the gameboxes - weirdly distinct.

I loved playing a fantastic version of Morrowind on a console.

I loved KOTOR and Jade Empire.

I loved Riddick.

I loved the S controller.

I loved Psychonauts.

I loved Halo 1.

But when I think of the thing, I keep thinking of the smell.

I almost want to repurchase one now.
