Xbox: A Nostalgia Thread

Best online/community experience I've had gaming, bar none. Makes sense that it quickly got cancelled. Bastards.

Oh fuck yes this was so good

I just can't get into post-ps1 Sony consoles. I wish I had bought an original Xbox back in the day but the GameCube was perfect for me. The 360 is probably my favorite all time console

the original xbox was just a bad console

it isnt possible for someone to like the xbox more than the PS2
I like the original Xbox more than the PS2. I like it more than the 360 too. Good exclusives. Powerful hardware for the time. Very unique console.

Those pics remind me I never got around to finishing Gun Valkyrie.

Does it work on 360 anyone know?

I just checked on this and sadly GV is not compatible with the 360. Not sure why MS never released the game digitally though. Another reason I'm glad I kept the original xbox.

worst exclusives of that gen imo

most of the good exclusives could be played on PC anyway

Halo 2 Tribute

Man those were good times. For me, it was the peak of multiplayer gaming. I just can't play online FPS much anymore. Halo 2 was the right time, with the right people, and had the right gameplay and set of maps for me.

Who doesn't like the OG Xbox looking back?
It was basically the Dreamcast 2. Such a unique system that really did have some great games. I used to really like how the multi-ports were almost always better on Cbox compared to the rest. Also Riddick and Breakdown were amazing.

I wonder if we'll see some more Xbox games return as HD Classics once the next Xbox comes out? I'd love to see a lot of these games get proper HD remakes.

I dunno. I was happy with my PS2, GC, and DC, but I really wanted to give Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue 2, Jet Set Radio Future, Phantom Dust, Steel Batallion, Breakdown, Otogi 1 and 2 a shot.

Also I still think Outrun 2 is better than Coast to Coast.

Halo 1 did feel better on the PC though, then again i've only played it on PC. Unreal Championship seemed pretty cool too, and Oddworld Strangers Wrath just got properly ported recently.

Star Wars Battlefront 1& 2 multiplayer was so good

Playing Vice City with my 80s custom soundtrack

Really enjoyed the original Xbox, great system

I think I'm one of the few people who didn't love Halo 2.

It's weird because I played the hell out of it, I even went as far to buy the multiplayer map-pack retail disc. It's a fun game, but there was a lot of stuff about it that turned me off.

Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 (and very specifically ONLY the Xbox 360) was one of the best online console experiences I had ever had. It was the only time in my life I had Live Gold and was the only game I played for months.

Great memories with the OG Xbox and the 360 speaks for itself. I originally bought the Xbox for the original Splinter Cell and enjoyed the hell out of it. Then I played a demo for a little game called Halo. I was so impressed I immediately went out to the store and bought it.

What I loved about the OG Xbox was how it fostered my love for what people call B games. There were quite a few on there and I enjoyed most of them.

Ninja Gaiden Black, Mechassault, Midtown Madness, Crimson Skies, PGR2 (cat and mouse was amaze balls), Halo 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Phantom Dust, Gun Valkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Knights of the old republic 1 & 2, Stranger's Wrath, Bloodwake, Conker and a few more I'm forgetting.

I spent so many hours playing Mechassault on xbox live and then rainbow six on live. Man I played the original XBox so much, one of the best systems I have ever owned.

Fantastic thread for two fantastic consoles. I cannot express in words how much I love my OG Xbox, which I am still playing almost as much as my 360. I'm currently re-playing KOTOR trying and failing (over and over again) to beat Marl in the arena. Last month it was Sudeki and Mechassault and next month I'm finally going to do a completionist run of Morrowind on the Xbox. All played with my still pristine original Duke controller which is built like a tank, they just don't make controllers like that anymore.

Great games, great memories and a great console. And the follow up is just as good. I can't imagine what my gaming life would be like without the Xbox & the 360. Absolutely wonderful consoles!

Awesome thread OP! Some great memories with the OG Xbox. I still think about it often because of this game here:

I didn't have Xbox Live for the Xbox but I spent so much time in this game it was ridiculous.

Hell yeah. One of the best local multi experiences I've had.

Bought mine for ghost recon 2, last memory was the warriors in glorious 720p, oh and the greatest football game of all time nfl 2k5. Xbox was awesome and bridged the way to hd gaming with most titles supporting 480p and widescreen, a few 720p too.

Wow, seeing those games that came out in 2007 really gives more credit to those who said 2007 was the best year in gaming ever. Of course, they are wrong as 1998 was the best year in gaming EVER but '07 was still damn good.

I worked in game retail during pretty much the entirety of the Xbox 1's generation so this is quite nostalgic for me, but maybe not the way it was intended.

I always thought the Xbox was kinda crap, but I did buy a used one just to play Panzer Dragoon Orta and promptly returned it. Loading times on the Xbox and PS2 were still something of an issue while the Gamecube was pretty good in that regard. Also, the PS2 and Xbox had high defect rates while I think I saw only one defective Gamecube, a trend which seemingly got worse with the 360.

The Xbox hardware was ridiculously huge and heavy, especially in comparison to the PS2 and Gamecube. It may have been the most powerful of the three but not by a huge margin or anything. The fact you had to buy a $50 remote to watch DVDs on it, when you could watch DVDs without anything extra on the PS2 also seemed like quite a rip-off to me. On the plus side you didn't need to buy a memory card, though they did sell them.

The online thing wasn't a draw for me, and I will not pay to play online when I already pay for internet, and since I don't play first person shooters much there has been little (if any) reason for me to pay attention to Microsoft's consoles.

This past generation, I didn't even buy a PS3 until a couple of months ago, and there isn't a single game on the 360 I want that I can't get on the PS3, while the reverse is not true. I expect this trend will continue into next generation since Sony's own internal teams put out great exclusives while Microsoft caters to a type of gamer that isn't me. I couldn't care less about gamer score, achievements, trophies, or whatever you want to call them.

TL;DR I bought a used Xbox 1 just to play Panzer Dragoon Orta, then returned it. Never "jumped in" because Microsoft doesn't cater to my interests in the slightest - and I own close to 700 video games across many consoles.

Happy to see several people representing Breakdown.

It was a total bomba sales wise IIRC, but a truly innovative game (with some flawed gameplay) all the same. It's too bad we don't have very many of these type of games in the HD era.

Awesome job with the OP. All the year by year advancements are crazy when you see it all together like that.

Would love to see a similar kind of yearly breakdown for PS/Nintendo considering how long they've been around, anyone know of any?

not even being a dick i just honestly cant see how anyone could possibly think the xbox was even close to being as good as the PS2

Did anyone else like Brute Force?

It was kind of like Advent Rising where it had a lot of flaws but a lot of really interesting concepts as well.

Halo 2 is still one of the best online experiences that I have ever had, and I would do anything to have it back (but only if it was exactly as it was)

Tune in to E3 when Microsoft shows off the Anniversary edition for NeXtBox.

Opinions. What are they?

I loved the Xbox. Still remember walking out to see a movie when I saw my family watching TechTV or G4 or whatever it was at the time and there was a video of Oddworld on the screen in a warehouse. Blew me away. I played more on the Xbox than the PS2 / Gamecube combined last gen. 360? Not so much but I'll always have a special place in my heart for the good old original system. Oh, and I loved the Duke. I was sad when my last Duke got the dreaded shredded cable.
