YES!

The right move would be - whether he agrees with them or not - actually responding to the substantive critiques of the Havok speech made by Wheeler, Hughes, Brothers, and a few others, rather than making a single reference (strawman?) to someone, somewhere calling him a racist as an excuse for the "drown in hobo piss" tweet. But at least it's a start.

I didn't read all of the OT because it was pretty meaty but I got the gist. If we aren't talking about specific comics here I would like to ask a question to anybody who knows any of these heroes comics.
- Captain America
- Plastic Man
- Ghost Rider

If anyone know anything about these guys comics (what I mean by this is their present comics, like if their still going on) if I could get some recommendations. I would like to see some of their present comics but me not even reading 1 comic before don't know where to look or begin. I would just like to see their most present comic just so I can see them action.

So if anybody can help me thanks.

For Captain America:
Read Ed Brubaker's run, it's collected in TPB and in Omnibus form, it's a great starting point.
After Ed's run, read the current series. Other books to consider reading is Mark Waid's recent mini-series from a few years ago.

Plasticman:
Ah he did have a series during the mid 2000s, but I don't know if it is collected.
If anything, read Grant Morrison's Justice League as he featured in it in later stories.

Ghost Rider:
Anything by Garth Ennis, Daniel Way and Jason Aaron if you want something more modern.

Some of the runs I mention are from a few or some years ago but they are still good and worth reading.

Bought it. Haven't read it yet. It's the last issue so far as I know. Unless they plan another mini at some point.

Darn, I had no idea it was a mini. My local comic shop usually labels something as (3 of 5) if it's a mini. I guess they must have not realised.

I hope Remender himself decided to be the bigger man about this and apologize, rather than being told by editorial that it isn't exactly good PR to insult your fans in public.

And yes, I also agree in that there's still no dialogue with the critics. Maybe Havok's questionable expression of his well intended viewpoint and the lack of a suggestion for 'appropriate' nomenclature for mutants is going to be addressed in the comics.

On that note count me in as someone who doesn't find the term 'mutant' deragatory. They proudly call themselves that and coming from a scientific background I don't correlate the word with something inherently negative at all.

I tried to read the Comics Alliance article about Havok, but would someone explain in plain English the reason this became such a shit storm and what relevance to real life politics it has.

People attribute mutant to disenfranchised minorities. They feel Havok is saying "Stop calling me gay/black/jewish". They feel it is assimilationist rather than inclusionist.

Oh and Remender blew up on a twitter.

Ok, but isn't Havok's viewpoint meant to create conflict for story reasons? Do people get mad when Red Skull advocates genocide?

To be fair, Red Skull is a bad guy.

I'd feel even worse about it if they just went like "GAH! When I spoke...at that press conference...I was...under the thrall...OF ONSLAUGHT!!"

I know Morrison isn't above leaving dead clues, but I feel like he put this in as a teaser in #18. If it was my kid, it wouldn't even be a question.

haw, Remender should do that.
well first it was just criticism about a tonedeaf and inconsistent creative choice the writer made, and the question was, 'did he understand the underlying issue or was he the one that was tonedeaf, and not his proxy, Cyclops, Jr.?' And he got defensive, and I guess twitter trolling occurred(I didn't read all the tweets), and then he got pissed off, hobo style, and it turned into a thing.

The way this speech is presented in the issue, combined with Remender's response to criticism and his previous comments about how he's approaching writing Havok, suggest that that's not going to happen and that readers are expected to regard this as an enlightened viewpoint.

I don't think all this criticism would be happening if there was any reason to think that this was going to be represented in the story as a controversial viewpoint.

#ManufacturedControversey

I get what Havok is saying. At the end of the day we're all humans first and last. Everything else is just details.

Except some humans count themselves more than others, and of course their details matter more than the details of others as well. So instead of being reductionist on top of it, they're advocating accepting the details and the humanity and all of it as equal. When you stand on the shoulders of giants, it helps to watch where you're going. And not tell people to drown themselves in hobopiss(tm) because of the discussion you started.

In real life the mutant classification would be challenged under the Equal Protection Clause, but since mutants periodically destroy and/or take over countries or the world, the government would be able to withstand the strict scrutiny test for discrimination against a protected class.

Am I doing it right?

Edit: Now that I think about it, since mutants would clearly be subject to legal government discrimination as a class, Havok's viewpoint is very rational. Caveat: haven't read the issue yet and I did not do well in my constitutional law class.

Like most big internet blow ups, if you didn't read the tweets and blog posts that accompanied it, it would be a non-issue. Havok said something stupid, then supervillains attacked.

Here, this quote from the Wiki may put your mind at ease:
The first story arc is a 5-issue mini-series. The story is intended to continue to unfold in further mini-series and one-shots.

Of course, intended is the key word, there. It depends a lot on sales and whatnot. Even fucking Dynamo 5 didn't sell enough in its last run to warrant more. Which is just sad.

Nice. So, can we expect a TPB soon?

It's Image.... sooo.... They'll announce it for a July release, but it won't actually come out until October.

Finally read it. Art was great, story was lame (and I liked the Red Skull arc). I'm so sick of the Scarlet Witch whining about how nobody trusts her. Wonderman needs to go back to the turtleneck instead of dressing like the Fonz. I never would have given the speech a second thought.

Some DC news

• 2014 will bring a crossover between DC’s two Earths, according to Earth 2 writer James Robinson. “If I’m talking about a big event that’s happening in 2014, it’s all these characters meeting each other,” said Robinson, citing Crisis on Infinite Earths and the Justice Society during his spotlight panel in Anaheim. Robinson also said his goal was to make sure the writers involved in the event were invested in the story, and described himself as “the point guy” when it comes to the event, saying that Scott Snyder, Geoff Johns and Dan DiDio are also very involved. Earth 2 is also getting its own Batman, and the book will also feature the introductions of Starman (Ted Knight), Red Arrow (Earth 2′s version of Green Arrow), Hourman, Wildcat, Mister Miracle and Big Barda in the future.

IDW's TMNT is so good.
I picked up the first two volumes on Comixology last month, just on a whim.

Other than the bad films I've no experience, but goddamn the books are awesome. Really good pacing, made me really excited about comics as a medium again.

Hope you guys are on board with the 7 part TMNT event starting soon! Santolouco is on art and his work in the Foot Clan mini is amazing. You should check that out as well.

Got a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 today and the comics app works perfectly. I thought whole page view would be too small at first but it's pretty readable. How did I read comics without this?

I thought they said they'd address that. I get the impression they're not going to use it.

It would suck if there's one left and
Knight
gets it. Not that I have a problem with the character, but then
Squire goes back to her old identity? Or would it be Knight and Knight? lol

I bet neither gets it. :(

Nah, Morrison killed the boy. 'putting the toys back in the box', etc. He'll leave it up to someone else to being him back.

I just got the X-Statix omnibus in the mail. It's so gorgeous in every way imaginable (except for the random Brotherhood #9 issue that doesn't make a damn lick of sense and is ugly).
