NeoGAF Games of the Year 2012 Awards

You can make whatever narrative you want to fit out of every year. Oh this year mostly Japanese games won, yeah GAF are a bunch of weeabos! Oh GAF only chose super niche games that no one ever heard of, GAF is a bunch of hipsters!

This is dangerously close to saying GAF is a hivemind.

I've based my assessment on a consolidated majority vote, not posts floating out in the ether from disparate sources. That's not creating a hivemind; that's using data. Further, do you not agree that the GAF majority vote looks very similar to the GOTY lists made by video game websites like IGN, Giant Bomb, etc?

This is also the 3rd and final year for Minecraft. I made it a point to disallow games that are in alpha or beta so this doesn't happen again.

Good call, especially as these eternally-in-development games like Minecraft and DOTA2 seem to be becoming more common. Not much can be done about extremely drawn-out localisations, though.

All that says is that video game websites like IGN, Giant Bomb, etc. are pretty good at choosing GOTYs that gamers actually like.

"Why didn't people vote for what I liked ;_;"
Ha, you and another keep hoping this thread will turn into that, but I think the guy's just surprised that for as much as games journalism gets criticized on GAF, the top vote-getters at GAF more or less fell in line with games journalism.

You know what's really disturbing? SMB3 was released in Japan in 1988, North America in 1990, and PAL-land in 1991.

I am surprised that Journey did beat Walking Dead (mostly because Journey was PS3 only). But 1 and 2 are also my personal 1 and 2 for the year, so I agree with this list. Congrats to thatgamecompany.

Also nice to see some love for Sleeping Dogs, hopefully we see a successor.

MGS4 was PS3 only and it won in 2008.

My first reaction when considering this year was that it was very disappointing for a variety of reasons. However, after really thinking about it, I had a ton of fun with games this year and I think I was exposed to more pleasant surprises than usual. So some of the games I was looking forward to didn't turnout as well as I hoped but there was more than enough surprises and games from previous years to keep me extremely busy with games.

I don't recognize anyone from the vita thread in there so troll fail.

If anything they're probably mostly PC gamers.

Ever since you asked for quality games like Shinobido 2 to be a PS+ game after (correctly) complaining about the terrible trash dogshit "free" games we're doled out every month like gruel in a Dickensian orphanage, I've just associated you with the general reality distortion field surrounding the Vita. My apologies if my assessment was incorrect.

I went through my affinity bros' lists and it looks like I need to make it a priority to play Halo 4, Far Cry 3, and finish The Witcher 2.

Congratulations to Journey! 2012 was a fairly disappointing year for me overall compared to the greatness of the past couple of years, but at the very least it has been a great time for storytelling and atmosphere in games. Thanks again for including a link to the soundtrack topic in the OP, timetokill!

Instead of just dumping my affinity list here, I decided to go back and read the ballots of everybody that was included to see if they wrote anything that I wanted to comment on.

Snuggler: FTL is a great top pick! Like many other people, you're making me want to try out Chivalry. Is it kind of sad that I'm already anticipating the Steam summer sale?

O.DOGG: Grimrock is another game that I need to get around to playing. I also considered listing Mass Effect 3 (the Tuchanka stuff was really well done), but I guess the ending dragged my experience down more.

evilhomer: I also went in to Spec Ops with a bit of knowledge ahead of time (having heard about the comparisons to Apocalypse Now and Heart of Darkness), but I didn't think that it hurt the experience at all for me. If anything, it enhanced it by pushing me to pick on the more subtle things that are done in the first half of the game.

Miletius: What were some of the major improvements made to Civ V in the Gods and Kings expansion that fixed the game for you? I ended up going back to Civ IV after barely playing Civ V, but I'm willing to give the game a second chance with some improvements.

benny_a: I enjoyed the presentation of your post. If you have more time next year, I'd love to see more write-ups.

Remachinate: That is probably the first time that I've seen someone point to the lack of positive outcomes as a weakness of The Walking Dead. If anything, I felt that their commitment to the world being a grim and terrible place was essential in convincing players of the importance of Lee and Clementine's relationship.

Ventrue: I still need to try X-COM on Ironman. To be perfectly honest, I ended up save abusing a bit on my normal campaign, and that undoubtedly lessened the tension.

Clunker: You made an interesting point about how The Walking Dead gives you real agency over character development and how the cast relates to each other (instead of agency over plot developments). And yeah, I loved Spec Ops: The Line's loading screens, too. Talk about shaming Call of Duty...

Berto: Yay! Botanicula! I would also love to see more descriptions from you next year.

Maccas You were late to the party on The Binding of Isaac too? That game is really incredible. I would love to see more descriptions from you next year.

Not a bad list. I approve of all the games in the top five, at the very least, and there's good variety spread through the rest of it too. I still wish I had a chance to play through Mark of the Ninja or Persona 4 Golden though, they probably would have found space on my list.

Look, seriously though, Mass Effect 3: not an RPG.

Huh, my affinity numbers are real low (like 72 for my top match). That surprises me. I always thought I had more populist tastes.

I only had some screenshots prepared and then on the 17th I panic posted it, having only a few notes for Papo & Yo and Where is my Heart and posted what I did because I thought the 17th was the deadline and not the 19th. And then when it's posted I didn't feel like going back. I wish I had expanded on it.

But next year!

Also I really like that the voting is done mid January and not mid-December, allows one to play stuff over when a lot of people have holidays.
It changed up my list quite a bit.

Yet another year where I strongly disagree with the GAF GOTY. Journey did absolutely nothing for me. Oh well.

I'd be interested to see scores if normalized by install bade. Some of those Vita games would jump up, it would also make Journey even more of a winner.

One can't really do that because the platform adoption rates on GAF will invariably be different from the actual worldwide totals. Each voter would have to list which platforms they owned, which would be a horrible nightmare to parse.

Don't understand some of the genre classifications. Why is Dishonored in the 'Adventure' section? Especially when the other entries are more traditional Adventure games. Dishonored should be either in Action or FPS category.

Which leads to the second point: why isn't there an Action-Adventure category? Games such AC3 and Dishonored fit that much more than solely Action or Adventure. The Resident Evil and Alan Wake games would have went there too. ZombiU to FPS or Action-Adventure.

Horror is not a genre but a theme\tone thing. Yes, there tends to be specific gameplay mechanics tied with these games but i don't see how RE6 and AW can be wholeheartedly listed under 'Horror' in regards to the gameplay design and mechanics.

And why isn't Journey counted under Downloadable/DD Game of the Year? Because it had a box release significantly later after the original PSN release?

I haven't had a chance to play Journey yet (ethernet out is busted on PS3) but have a friend who swears by it, so I'm sure it's quality. Though I do expect it to be 2013's 2012 Most Hated Game, like every other winner.

Glad to see XCOM take #3 since I knew the first two would be locked up with Journey and Walking Dead. Overall not too bad a list, may have to try Sleeping Dogs and Spec Ops: The Line. Glad Max Payne 3 didn't get anywhere near the top #10.

Apparently my list was a lot less mainstream than I thought, 5 out of my top 6 were in the top 20, but the rest didn't show. Sad.

Affinity:

1. A Link to the Snitch (102)

And in no one else's top 10 most similar, I must have awful taste. Really nice work as always on the awards Cheesemeister and timetokill! Thought this was the best voting thread yet, the mandatory comment thing really made it worthwhile to read, and I read pretty much all of it.

It's strange how there was a substantial drop in voting this year compared to last, and even though the number of votes is barely higher than 2010's, the number of points is lower. Though last year's list is full of more blockbusters while this year seems more diverse and interesting overall.
