Putting one console on top of another in an entertainment center?

So I'm picking up a Deluxe Wii U next Sunday, but I don't have any space in my entertainment center to place it without taking another console out.

I don't really want to do that, since they all serve a purpose -- I've already got my PS3, PS2, Wii, and 360 in there. Now I would just replace the Wii with my Wii U, but I play lots of Brawl and GameCube games on my Wii, so I've come to think that disconnecting the Wii just won't do.

So, since I'm pretty sure the Wii U is smaller and lighter than any of the current-generation consoles (aside from the Wii), I've started entertaining the idea of just putting it on top of either my 360 or PS2. Has anyone done something like this for a long period of time (that is, stacking a lighter console on a heavier one)? Does it lead to heat-related problems? Is there any reason this is definitely a bad idea? It's the only solution I've come up with for now, but I won't do it if it'll lead to damage down the road.

Any advice on this matter is appreciated. Thanks!

It's definitely against the design of the consoles and should not be done if the console above or below has any air vents above or below.

I did this all the time with the PS2. My Dreamcast and PS2 were best friends forever.

I do it right now with a PS3 atop an older 360 Elite, but I dont use the 360 anyway.

Also I think most consoles have rubber feet on the bottom which would ensure that enough air gets into and out of the vents. If air doesn't flow despite of this then the console isn't properly designed.

Never stack electronics on top of each other.

This must be one of those post-90s rules, taller tower is always better, now the kids think you have mad scientist equipment.

Yeah I dunno where that comes from. Electronics like those in your pic are meant to be stacked ffs. They're even built to have mostly the same dimensions and stuff.

But the console below might have air vents (Xbox 360 S for an example) upwards and they were not designed to work if there is something blocking it.

Then they designed it wrong!
But yeah I understand what you're saying. But a Wii on top of a Wii U should be fine since the Wii U has the vents on the side (right?).

Thanks for your replies, everyone! Opinions seem pretty split down the middle... guess I'll have to give it a little more thought. But I'm leaning toward it being all right. I certainly wouldn't be using both consoles at the same time, in any case.

As long as you don't block any air vents and don't put the bigger/heavier console on top you should be fine.
The 360 has vents on the top, so you should put the WiiU on top of the PS2, if it fits. Or you could just put them side by side standing up if that fits.

Standing up won't work because the entertainment center is horizontally oriented, so yeah, I'll either put the Wii U on top of the PS2 or the Wii on top of the Wii U (assuming its vents aren't located on top).

Thanks for the advice!

It's not a good idea. I've seen Cable boxes and DVD players stop working because they were stacked. The system on the bottom isn't going to let out heat properly because it has something on top of it blocking the air that would cool it off and the system on the top could be getting extra heat from the system on the bottom, even in standby mode or something.

Had my Wii lying on its side on top of my old-school 2008 360 with that stacked on top of my 5.1 surround box. Never had a problem. My 80GB PS3 sits alone though. Needs to lose some weight.

I love this image. Cheating in Sonic 3 & Knuckles & Knuckles while cleaning the console.

What's the first thing inserted into the 32X?

It's an adapter for playing Master System games on the Genesis, although it's not 100% compatible.

When I was living in basically a closet years ago, I had a Dreamcast stacked on a Gamecube, on top of a PS2 with an XBox as the base. It was fairly precarious, but no long term harm.

How about putting the Wii on top of the Wii U?

Both systems allow for smaller things to placed on top of them, as well as the old-style PS2 and old-style 360. The PS3 absolutely isn't since it's heavy and cuvry. The new-style 360 isn't because of that fan on top.

Looking at my current setup, the only console I have sitting on another is my SNES sitting atop of rarely-used OG PS2, laying on its side. Everything else, while rather close together, is not atop one another; most are either top loaders, anyway, or are curved such that putting another unit atop it would be infeasible without it wobbling a lot. Pretty sure all the vents are exposed, too, so.

Well, there's also the Model 1 Genesis atop a Model 2 Sega CD, but it's kinda designed for that.

Not really useful, but just thinking about stacking my beautiful, pristine consoles on top of each other makes me feel nauseous.. It's just...wrong
