The book never referred to his eyeball as having a "contraption", IIRC. There was even an illustration for his face at the beginning of the chapter where he's introduced. His eye had no contraption to it, was oversized, always open, reddened, and moved on its own.

The movie version looked like a novelty toy. They probably thought the book version was too scary for children or something.

This is the illustration they used in the book.

Problem is that they built Voldermort up so much that in the end they had to find ways to lessen him enough so he could be beat.

That said the books treat him, his motivations, and his past so so much better. GoF was my 2nd favorite book in the series. Still is but the movie is terrible.

People keep saying stuff like this and I may end up having to read the books. I'll just... skip the first two though. Cause I loath to re-read the first one and the movie version of the second one does not make me excited at all about reading it.

They do. It plays into some of the themes you commented on in PoA regarding the wizarding bureaucracy.

I do love it when a large group of very important people make really bad decisions, this idea of a governing body of Wizards fascinates me.

Anybody else think the editing was a bit crap in this one? Seemed to be all over the place at times.

The editing was terrible! There might have been a good movie amongst all the stuff the cut and put together but what they put on the screen was NOT a good movie.

Although, with Moody and Tennant, I don't think it could have been a good movie at all.

Azkaban is amazing and the only one I like. Deathly Hallows Part 1 was the most unbearable movie theater experience of my life. I fell asleep three damn times.

Haven't seen Part 2 yet.

Azkaban was so consistently awesome from start to finish that it made me forget about the terrible plot holes in the story until I was thinking about it later.

And I hear you about falling asleep, I was almost out during Chamber of Secrets. If it weren't for the delicious popcorn I'd made it would have been a lost cause for me.

This is the illustration they used in the book.

That looks respectable and menacing.

i thought goblet of fire was... ok i guess. i mean i really liked the dragon part and the very end. but other than that it doesn't have much to offer.

order of the pheonix i found to be much better though. like it feels like it moves the story forward. it's got some pretty great scenes. and it will introduce you to a character that you will absolutely hate with the fiery burning passion of a thousand suns.

SPOILER! for last movie.

i still cant believe they never killed that pink piece of shit

Harry was a total asshole in the OotP book. So much shouting and shitty teenage angst. I didn't think the movie was all that great though.

He's always an asshole. He's a jerk to his friends in most the books, wasn't just the 5th.

In the end, the series 4 main players are all assholes.

Harry = Asshole
Voldemort = Asshole
Dumbledore = Big Asshole
Snape = Asshole

True but he seems to take it up a gear in the 5th book.

Well to be honest I loved the whole series. Loved each and every book, though some more than others. And then I watched the movies and largely was disappointed by the films. Which is to be expected since books are usually better.

But if you didn't enjoy the first book or however many you have read then you might not enjoy the rest of the series. The first two movies I felt were awful where as both the books were very engrossing and fun. Chamber of Secrets was a great read. GoF was the first one that really expanded the universe. Its the first of the lengthier books and I couldn't get enough of the universe.

Reading her character was one of the most infuriating things to do, in a good way.

Imagined Cho Chang and Fleur delacour as beautiful......They were not.

Also, Harry's taste in women is hilarious, lol. He goes after asians, black girls, and gingers.

Oh absolutely, but every time I reread the series, Harry seems a bigger asshole.

So far Harry has been a complete knob-head. GoF really set out to show you that he doesn't care about anyone but himself for the most part.

I really couldn't enjoy the first book, but the 3rd movie and parts of this one have gotten me interested in the rest of the world that they left out.

Maybe I'll just go on a Harry Wikia binge fueled by ice cream and self hatred.

Fleur was pretty, except for the lagoon scene.

Harry's a selfish asshole with grand delusions because of his "chosen one" status. There's another character who ends up being more of a real hero, and I really like how that plot sequence unfolds.

I wouldn't go that far. Harry just thinks nothing is more important than his destiny, and as such has zero tact when it comes to his friends. He is thinking of the greater good, but he can't look at what's right in front of him.

The Book was much better than the film. Its likely the one I like the most about the series.

The film was okay, These films mainly come down to what type of fan you are.

Non-Fan, only PoA and the final few are really going to interest you.

Fan (who cares about the story but not to an extreme), The Movies are going to be great for you

Fanatic Obesssive "I'm a Wizard" Fan's, You will judge them too much based on the books and dislike them because Act 5 Scene 3 with that cool thing you love is cut.

Harry's hair was always described as impossible to tame in the books. If anything, this had the best representation of it.

I thought it was just a representation of him getting older and not giving a shit until he has to ask a girl to dance.

Great representation of my teenage years.

In the case of the final movie, I actually had problems with them over complicating things.

We also meet Cedric Diggery who is immediately set up as some very important person even though we've never seen him before or heard of him otherwise.

You did see him before, but you didn't realize it was him because you're watching movies and not reading books.

He was in Prisoner of Azkaban. He was the first (and possibly only) person to ever beat Harry at Quiddich. And then he was big enough not to accept that honor, since he didn't feel he earned it (Dementor interference).

Harry had his "Super Broom". So it has an asterisk, like all of Harry's Quiddich losses. Which I thought was a bit silly, never having him lose at anything.

I'll never get the hate for this movie... but the wizard battle with Voldy at the end of this movie was a tad anti-climactic for me

Entire sequence felt rushed. They included everything that was in the books during that sequence but only gave themselves 5 minutes to do it.

I enjoyed watching Voldy toy and taunt with Harry

but the whole... ghostly parents saving the day during the Wand duel was just a huge wtf for me (cuz I never read the books)

marrec, I have a question for you. What did you think of the pacing? Was there anything off about it?

As an HP who read the books before the movies came out, I found GoF to be especially terrible because it felt like all the scenes were 5 minutes or less, and the movie felt completely hyperactive because it tried to fit into 2+ hours a book that was way too big for the time allotted.

I'm wondering if someone who never read the books noticed this or if I'm just crazy.

I read the books first, but I always felt that the wand lore was never properly explained in the films. Just enough to kind-of make sense. Though to be fair the books go more in depth and it makes only slightly more sense than in the films.

I've said before that I've enjoyed ALL the Harry Potter movies for one reason or another, but the last movie... Death Hallows pt2 was the biggest piece of shit I've ever witnessed...

Not only is that the missing piece of my HP movie collection, I wouldn't even take it, even if it were given to me for free.

Voldermort pretty much peaks in the next film, but they really mess his role up in the last three films. A lot of that has to do with the source material, though, so it's not like there was much they could do.

The worst part is that the end of the book isn't even in the damn film. Getting the Order of the Phoenix together to discuss strategy etc. That's when as a reader, the anticipation really ramped up for me because shit just got real. Just a horrid adaptation of the book. The worst of them all, by far. Which is a shame since it's one of my favorite books of the series.

Marrec, if you come away at the end of the movies still wanting to know more, I'd seriously recommend reading the books. Skip the first two, and read the rest. You'll probably be amazed by just how much back story they miss out, and tbh, quite alot of it is pretty important and interesting. Most of the characters are fleshed out WAY better, such as Moody between this film and the book it's based on. Same goes for the rest of them.

There was a rushed feel to everything, but it wasn't like Chamber of Secrets where a scene wasn't allowed to linger. They were able to slow it down sometimes pretty effectively. The editing seemed schizophrenic though, and all of the Tri-Wizarding challenges felt like they didn't get enough screen time or set up. Almost like it was just an excuse to get Harry into the middle of the Maze so the real story could take place.

Wait, Harry Potter on Netflix? Wut?

Via Netflix DVD style. Old school, or something.

Wut? Was he in PoA? Why would a Gryffindor house dude beat Harry who is in Gryffindor house? I'm so confused.

We'll see, I'm a big book guy so it's not like I hate reading overall, but there are so many other books that I need to read. These movies have gotten me interested in the rules and lore of this world though, I'm just afraid that it won't be explored to the depth that I want in the books. I'll probably check them out sometime.

Cedric is from Hufflepuff. They put someone else in the PoA movie, but he is on the Quiddich game. As for the books, I also think you should read them.

Cedric was in Hufflepuff. In PoA there's a Quiddich match where Harry passes out and his Nimbus 2000 is destroyed. Cedric was the Seeker for the other team. Probably because a different director would be doing GoF, and because he had no speaking roles (not to mention it was a very dark scene and you could barely see him) they didn't bother casting more than an extra in the role for PoA.

Do they mention in the movie that he is in Hufflepuff? I don't remember that part. I seem the remember in the colors of Harry's house.

I don't remember if they mention, but the colors are yellow and black (Hufflepuff), not red and black (Gryffindor).

What specifically did you think was good about this one?

It didn't have any artificial Harry/Hermionie bullshit injected into the script by Steve Kloves to give "tension". For all I can remember, it stuck to the book pretty well save for the Ludo Bagman character. It didn't become so obsessed with maintaining its dark atmosphere that it forgot it was a fantasy series. Lots of things really, I could rant all day for what I don't like about Kloves's script/Yates directing style.

Deathly Hallows Part II was okay, but mostly for the fact that it was all the end. More the actor's accolade than the director/writer.

Hmm... I hope you come into my subsequent LTTP threads to provide a counterpoint if I find myself gushing a bit too much. (Not likely.)

Oh I'll be there ;)

Don't get me wrong, I liked certain parts of the Yates films, but it was so overwhelmingly like he didn't want to write an adaptation and was trying to make it his own story. The Dragonball Z Harry/Voldemort fight for example.

Yay, another nice thread man! :D

Yeah, it was pretty obvious to me you wouldn't like this one. Eh, as others said already. Great book, meh movie.

Regarding Moody, he is such a cool character in the books. I never expected him to be goofy as you said. At least in the next movies he will be better.

About Harry x Hermione. lol Well, in the books its quite clear that they have nothing to do with each other. Harry never really cares for her in the first books. He is kind of whatever, at least she helps us when we need to do our homework or solve some mystery. And thats it. But be prepared because 7.2 will confuse the hell out of you with one specific scene. :p

Also, what.the.fuck. at people saying that 7.2 is a bad movie. WTF. It was the best one for me together with Azkaban.

Now talking about the next one you will watch, for people that have already watched it:

I don't really get the hate, for the book I mean, of course its quite extensive on its descriptions and flashbacks, but the "lets form a secret group inside the school to fuck with Umbridge" was one of my favorite moments in the series. I love the recruiting of people from all the houses and all the secrecy, and Hermione's ideas. Training spells by themselves. idk Maybe its just me, but I really felt there and the union and the hatred for Umbridge when reading it. I also love Imelda Staunton, so it added for it to be a good movie. This also feels like the starting point for us to know who will be the characters that will matter in the end, the ones that will stand by Harry, and the ones that will be important in the final battle, the ones that we will miss if they eventually die in the end. It also introduce us the best character of the book: Luna. I might add that she is the best represented one in the movies as in similarities with the books descriptions, she is exactly what I expected from reading the book. Great casting. Yeah, but over all I really like Order of the Phoenix. :X

Now talking about the next one you will watch, for people that have already watched it:

I enjoyed 7.2 but the issues I had...

Were all with the finale.

Snape's story. On it's own everything was done well, but how in the world did they forget to include the short scene with Snape Calling Lilly a mudblood. The reason for her abandoning Snape was never answered.

King's Cross. Again, it was gone well enough, but I loved how the book had Harry being a bit of a smartass to Dumbledore (and rightfully so). In the film it's still the usual reverence for Dumbledore. Harry still respected him in the books, but he wasn't going to let him off without getting some answeres

Final battle. In trying to make it more "epic" it just came off as goofy. The final duel with Harry and Voldemort may have been simpler in the book, but it worked very well. I didn't like that the film left out all the dialogue between the two.

Elder Wand. I actually liked the change of having Harry snap the thing in two, but it seemed silly not to include 15 more seconds of film to have him repair his old wand.
