GAF Plays: Blood

so who do we have playing?

Just finished the first episode. I love the carnival level and its secret level.

the carnival is incredible. it always amazes me how many ideas and tricks they crammed into that one level, from the head-kicking mini-game to the simple but clever way the secret level is unlocked.

also WE WANT JOJO

Blood 1v1 on e1m1 was amazing.

there's something about the design of blood levels which makes them work really well in multiplayer. e1m1 in particular works really well because the exit is about 2 metres from the entrance on the other side of a destructible wall, so the entire level is a circuit.

I am halfway through the second episode. I completely forgot how many neat tricks this game had. I was pretty amazed when a gargoyle in the environment morphed into an actual enemy. That looked pretty good. Back then it would probably have blown my mind. And yes, the carnival level was amazing.

from a technical perspective one thing which always blows me away with blood is that it's still 2.5D, but does some incredible things with rooms above rooms. for people who aren't familiar with making maps for the build engine, it's only possible to define two-dimensions in each sector of the map, with a "half" dimension for height.

that means that it's not possible to construct a 3D space where one sector of the map is above another. so, in order to create areas where you have two-levels above one another which the player is able to traverse, you need to create an invisible portal between two unconnected areas which the player seamlessly travels between.

keep that in mind when you're in an area which has two floors. one of the levels later in the game is in a massive temple where someone totally went to town with portals, and it glitches out like crazy but still impresses me quite a bit.

Frankly, no. Blood 2 is not a particularly good game. The engine was solid back in the day, and the graphics were nice, but it completely lacked the black humour and dark, cynical charm of Caleb's personality, instead transforming him into nothing more than an unlikeable sociopath. It also lacked the horror atmosphere and setting of the original, replacing it with some bland semi-futuristic sci-fi setting, and it had little to none of the pop culture references that made the original so good. Buy the original Blood, but don't bother with the sequel.

Alrighty.

I had heard it wasn't as good but I wanted to be sure. Thanks.
