A fair chunk of that list is dubious and contains a number of debunked urban legends.

From what I remember, there are way more than 10 forms of kissing in the Karma Sutra so the rest of those figures are suspect. It's not that great of a book either way but good for a historical insight into culture.

Also, the sinking university library one is also debunked. It's not sinking. The American flag was also not on the Canadian $2 bill.

Well, i read the OP's post.

Factually wrong
Myths
Common Sense
Percentages and Fractions taken from small case studies (or most likely made up) and implied as fact.

Terrible, not one thing made me say "heh, cool" or anything to that effect. Worst part is this is something thank alot of people will read and ill start hearing alot of these things as fact.

Yeah, there's a lot of bullshit on the list, but why can't I make a folder called con?

To the Google mobile!

"CON" and a number of other character strings are in fact reserved names that go back to the days of DOS and cannot be used to name folders or files. Other reserved names are:
PRN
AUX
NUL
LPT1
COM1
Potential drive letter - A: to Z:
A number of others
If you try to name a folder using one of these reserved names, the name will automatically revert to the default, generally "New Folder". Moreover, if you try to use a reserved name to name a file such as a Notepad or Microsoft Word document you will generally receive an error message.

193) Gold is so rare, only 90,000 tons of it have been taken from the earth in recorded history

Wrong

One wrong thing puts everything else into question.

246) Sharks apparently are the only animals that never get sick. As far as is known, they are immune to every known disease including cancer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark#Popular_misconceptions

348) The word Tips is actually an acronym standing for 'To Insure Prompt Service'.

No it's not, this is a folk etymology. A fairly stupid one, as far as they go.

265) A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why.

MythBusters proved this to be untrue, you can't hear the difference between the quack and echo but it does exist. It may be worth double checking with Suairyu / Chinner.

And op will know 60 isn't accurate.

This is dumb. Any current Chinese text is going to have punctuation. Really fucking old Chinese texts might not use it, but really fucking old Chinese texts are confusing as hell, even for most native speakers.

The Titanic one is wrong too. It wasn't the first ship to send an SOS.

The great wall actually can't be seen from space. Sorry, list.

ONE MORE !

54) The Mona Lisa has no eyebrows. It was the fashion in Renaissance Florence to shave them off.

WRONG!
Not sure about the fashion, but Mona Lisa lost it's eyebrows during a restauration made my Michelangelo (or some other ninja turtle =P)

See this copy made by a Leonardo's student wich "reveals a clearer picture of what the original, which has not been cleaned for some time, may have looked like when originally painted."

For more information, read here
Also, notes that Mona Lisa was one of the first examples of orange/blue poster xD

"25) Americans, on average, eat 18 acres of pizza every day."

I ate a large pizza to myself tonight, I am part of the problem :(

There's so many cool things in this 500, it's funny how gaf always goes straight to "WRONG WRONG WRONG" and not even saying 'oh cool' to a single interesting fact.

neverchange.

Because most of it is well know, common sense or unsubstantiated percentages or fractions.

I read the whole 500 and nothing was cool about any of it. And most of the stuff id find interesting i already knew like many others did.

253 is wrong. The symbol for medicine is supposed to have ONE snake and depicts the rod of Asclepius, not Caduceus.

Er, no, you're wrong too. The problem is that while a lot of it is genuinely cool and includes many things the majority of people would be unaware of, the fact that such a significant portion of the list is incorrect or unsubstantiated means we can't reasonably accept the validity of anything on the list, fascinating or not.

Yours view of "Cool" and mine a greatly different, I dont know about you but pretty much everyone i come into contact with knows some if not most of this useless trivia so much so that i assumed it was common knowledge. But i agree, the fact a large number of the list is factually wrong makes me doubt the rest.

Fractions and percentages however are for the most part based on test groups so small in scale that they can never predict anything even close to factual evidence.

How to create misinformation and willful ignorance:
Take a few facts of great certainty, a few facts of less great certainty, some of questionable certainty and throw in a few misleading, out of context facts and a few outright lies for good measure.

Mix together, and label the entire collection as; X hundred facts that will astound you!

There is a high proportion of critical thinkers and skeptics on GAF that can sense this pattern very quickly, and accords the list in its entirety as the general nonsense that it is.

Also... Rolex watches do not have a 'true sweeping' hand movement either. They have a 6+ ticks per second sweep, which is sufficient at the scale in which the change occurs, for it to appear as though it is sweeping. Also, Rolex have manufactured quartz (battery based, 1 tick per second) watches in the past, although have stopped due to the increasing lack of prestige over the years.

Many higher end watches have between 6 to 12 ticks per second - a range of 21k oscillations to 32k oscillations in the little spring that keeps the time of the watch.

Also, quartz watches are still significantly more accurate (as in, retains a smaller +_ variance over the course of a year) than automatic watches, despite the cost. The most accurate watches are found in digital watches like the G-Shock, satellite atomic calibration watches (that is, it uses atomic clock calibration from a satellite).

Yeah, why know things when you can be amazed by made-up things instead?

What a bunch of debbie downers!

501) Did you know that the distance between the Earth and the Sun is precisely equivalent to 5,000,000 loaves of bread laid end-on-end?

Facts!

An excess or deficiency of any of four distinct bodily fluids in a person directly influences their temperament and health.

For reals, you have to monitor your yellow bile every now and then. Otherwise you'll get a stomach ache when you eat the maggoty meat and you'll have to go to the local barber to get a preemptive trepanning.

EDIT: goddamn, beaten. This is what happens when you get hungry mid post.

181) On a Canadian two dollar bill, the flag flying over the Parliament Building is an American flag.

Incorrect. The flag on the old two dollar bill is, in fact, a Canadian flag. However, on the old ten dollar bill there is a flag that looks similar in design to an American flag, because it is actually the Canadian Red Ensign. The Canadian Red Ensign was the unofficial flag of Canada before the current Maple Leaf was adopted. The Manitoba and Ontario provincial flags are based off the Red Ensign.

Anyone who has been on the Internet more than a week has probably received at least one of those annoying lists of "facts": dozens and dozens of items of no real significance that somebody thought would be cool for you to know. It is indeed fortunate that the lists are usually composed of items of no real significance, because many of the entries are of dubious veracity. The purpose of these lists apparently is not to educate the masses (however trivially), but to induce readers into the information age equivalent of a scavenger hunt, sending them scurrying all over the Internet in an attempt to verify the truthfulness of the entries. Ours is one of the virtual doors that gets knocked on quite frequently by these scavengers, and while we're glad to help, our job is never done because anyone can make up lists like these--just invent four or five of the most far-fetched statements you can imagine, and follow them with the phrase "and no one knows why."

29) Pluto is no longer considered a planet, it is now known as a 'Dwarf Planet'.

100) The three most recently discovered planets were Uranus in 1781, Neptune in 1846, and Pluto in 1930.

roflmaojesuskeks. No bro. You car too much. Just chill out.

Seriously dude? This is how you retreat from a discussion? Can you get lamer then this??
Is this a discussion? It's just some silly chain-mail 'facts' that are fun to read, even if a bunch are inaccurate, some are still interesting.

Either way, you're too invested. If you really wanted this thread to die you wouldn't keep posting in it.

But there are actual facts that are interesting. These are mostly bullshit under the guise of being "facts." Why not go and learn some actual facts, and compile your own list?

479) A car that shifts manually gets 2 miles more per gallon of gas than a car with automatic shift.

Fuck yeah, stick shift vindicated.

37) The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket.

I'm trying to figure out how the guy wouldn't get totally fucked up if he's getting bombarded by enough microwaves to melt a candy bar.

I'm not any more invested in this thread then you are. And I don't care if this thread lives or dies (actually, I'd prefer it to not sink, so we can continue poking fun at it).

Anyway. I won't argue with you on this issue anymore - it's decidedly frivolous, and it's just exceeded my care threshold.

*high-five*

Let's move the bullshit here, though; http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=34852999

I wouldn't mind an urban legends/bullshit facts thread like that. This one though, as it is, is too robust to care for.
