2011 Game of the Year Media Picks Thread

Playstation 3 version aside, Skyrim is a fantastic game. I'd rather have an emergent open world with some jank than a highly polished corridor shooting gallery.

I've put about 8 hours into the PC version and I think it's terrible.

The combat being so bad was fine in Oblivion in 2006. It's not fine in what is essentially Oblivion again in 2011. Even if you completely ignore the other issues that inherently pop up in this types of games, the combat ruins the entire experience.

I'm having a lot fun with archery.

Add illusion and on the hardest difficulty and I was too in a the first few dungeons. It isn't really good though, and it gets pretty repetitive and eventually too easy after you start acquire tools(companions is a big one, and for archery sneak attack bonuses also).

Archery and magic were what saved Oblivion for me. It's just not enough now.

Even though Fallout 3/New Vegas' combat is not the greatest, it's much more fun than in the Elder Scrolls series and has ruined my ability to tolerate just its awfulness.

Dark Souls is getting a lot of love, relatively speaking. The majority of publications just place it below Skyrim and few other titles.

Also Skyrim will be the winner of the NeoGAF vote, it is basically decided at this point.

I just think it's ridiculous that zero publications have given their award to DS over skyrim. I understand that viewpoint, but it's not like I'm alone here in thinking that DS is superior. I deserve at least one publication that thinks like I do :D

Combat as a mage is a lot more interesting than (vanilla) Oblivion. It's in fact more fun for me than mage gameplay in the vast majority of action RPGs.

I can't be the only one who thinks DS isn't that hard? It's a very slow game so it doesn't require quick reflexes or blind luck. It's just extremely fair. Enemies can kill you as easily as you can kill them (and after a little while you pretty much waltz through any place). And if you die it's not really a big deal, since you don't lose anything you picked up. It's no where near as punishing as old school NES sidescrollers. Only thing I find unfair in this game are some of the very large bosses that fuck up your camera angle.

I honestly find UC3 more difficult so far, and I'm only on normal difficulty. Some of the fight sequences are brutal.

Also, how the hell did KZ3 get one? That game is pathetic.

Dude, if Skyrim can get that many awards I don't see why games that not only animated/run better, but played better as well, can get some as well.

Except it's not. The massive, gaping flaws in Oblivion were obvious after 10 (or, at most, 20) hours of play time. A lot of people have put much more into Skyrim, and it's clear that many of those flaws were either fixed completely or at least greatly reduced in impact. I was extremely skeptical of Bethesda going into Skyrim due to Oblivion, but the game shows that they did take a lot of the criticisms to heart. Sure, there are still plenty of problems, but none of them are game-breaking and it's one of the most fun games I played this year.

Sorry but all the complaints still there.

Animation? check
Combat? check
Bugs? check

All the problems still there, and while the game got a lot bigger, so did the problems (with barely any improvement over Oblivion)

First of all, how did the game get bigger? It's about the same size as Oblivion I'd say.

Secondly, the 3 complaints you listed aren't even close to "all" the problems Oblivion had, or even the most important ones. What about repetitve dungeons design? Lack of distinctive geographical features? Horrendous character models? Extreme loot and enemy scaling? Or, most importantly, the completely broken character progression system? All fixed or greatly improved.

Thirdly, even the ones you mentioned are generally improved.
Animation? Not on the level of chest-high wall shooters, but much better than in any open-world RPG I can think of.
Combat? I can't say anything about melee, but spellcasting is infinitely more diverse and visceral than in Oblivion.
Bugs? Again, I can only speak from my own experience: I played for 90 hours with 2 crashes and not a single quest bug. That's infinitely better than any other Bethesda RPG ever.

Yeah, I guess it should be a non-factor since you only spend 90% of your play time in combat.

You are forgetting the amount of time you spend walking to combat, equipping/creating equipment and skills for combat, and activating quests which end in combat.

It's not a non factor, it's a valid complaint, but people are obviously getting something else from the game that they enjoy so much that overrides the shittyness of the combat for them. I think that something is more than "this game has the most content" as well.

Haha, I was going to say this, but I haven't actually played Skyrim so I decided not to. But I can't think of an open world game where I don't spend a significant amount of time walking/driving to the next gameplay section. So boring.

No, don't you understand? It's clearly all just a huge conspiracy to make a game we don't actually enjoy win tons of awards.

Hey, lots of people enjoy heavily scripted FPS campaigns like in CoD but it doesn't make it any less bad. People can find enjoyment in anything if they try hard enough.

I think people are more annoyed at the bad reasons they get. Naturally the people who give those reasons don't see them as bad or will say something like "different cerebrovascular accidents for different folks" which isn't satisfactory either.

What do you mean, you'd be fine with people giving Skyrim GOTY if they better explained their reasons for it?

Things will always boil down to 'different strokes' when the measure of a great game is how 'entertaining' it is.

Also Skyrim will be the winner of the NeoGAF vote, it is basically decided at this point.
If the voting maintains the same trajectory it currently has, I think we'll see not only the closest race for #1 yet, but in a surprise upset I also predict that Skyrim will lose. It's currently sitting at a very close second place.

Honestly its disgusting that no one has given Dark Souls a single award.

I guess if the game was seriously broken it would have scooped about 10 awards by now.

I'm seriously disappointed that Dark Souls hasn't received anything yet.

Disappointed and flabbergasted.
people dont have patience for a game that actively tries to annoy the player and makes him stop playing it

skyrim baby! rpg of the gen, take that take that

I tried pretty damn hard to like Demon's Souls and couldn't. I don't see what other people see in the game, but I would never call it awful. Just not for me.

Skyrim can win the award for most game of the year, I guess.

Keep an eye on IncGamers. Everyone thought they'd give it to UC3, but they just announced Drake's Deception as runner-up. Leaving the other 10 game, Dark Souls, to fill the list. I think they'll announce it tonight/tomorrow.

Oh wow. The gap between the 1st place and second is ridiculously huge.
I guess Skyrim is the true 2011 GOTY by majority's vote.

Doesn't matter though, I'm still more interested in Gaf's GOTY results thread.

Seems like it's also going to be Skyrim.

I really need to play it to see what all the fuss is about.

It's just going to be another MGS4 and ME2 on GAF next year

Didn't play ME2 but MGS4 was outstanding..

Now I really need to play it. this, Xenoblade, Arkham City, and Dark souls are in my must play list.

I really need my 360 now ;_;

Same thing happened in 2009.

Batman landing on far second.
