I got Dark Souls. Now what?

Game can be rewarding but is a bitch to play sometimes. If you want a game with a fantasy setting may I humbly suggest Skyrim. Combat isn't nearly as fleshed out and balanced, but overall there is a lot more content and it's hella fun

I love both games, but I put about 150 hours into Dark Souls between different builds, replays, NG+++, etc. I don't think "more content" was required ;)

highjack this thread but... I don't want to play this because I feel like there's going to be a centipede monster. But I hear so many good things about it. But I don't like centipedes. Enough to make me not want to play this at all.

Am I wrong/should I bite?

It's not really a centipede and you can also skip it if you know how, so just get the game and ask for advice over at the Community thread, we'll help you!

Don't worry, with the way the camera works in that fight, you'll never even know it's a centipede.

Relatively easy boss, but stupid, stupid camera.

Thanks guys. I'll get it and try the skipping route.
Seriously, I'm a bitch when it comes to centipedes, lol.

Specifically about that boss,
it does not move like a centipede, if that makes a difference. It walks upright on 2 legs and has centipedes in place of it's arms and tail. It doesn't crawl around like a centipede.
. If you really want to avoid it, you will have to do some specific things that you will want to know before getting to that point in the game.

Dark Souls taps into your psyche and turns all enemies into your greatest fear.

All enemies will be centipedes if you play Dark Souls.

Everyone's talking about the Centipede Boss, but there are also centipede monsters.

I'm sure he'll freak out when he has to go get that chest with the Large Flame Ember

i also second that the "difficulty is exaggerated" posts are exaggerating. The game IS FUCKING HARD. Don't be fooled. Yes, it's "punishing" more than anything else. But that's what makes it difficult. There is also a huge learning curve in the beginning.

That being said.. this game is awesome, and probably my favorite game this generation. I probably already posted this in this thread. Who cares. It's the best.

EDIT: I suggest pyro in the beginning. You can go mostly or all melee if you want, you start at level 1 (requiring less souls to level up), and you start with pyromancy which is pretty powerful.

To everyone who says the Difficulty is Exaggerated...

TOMB OF THE GIANTS?!!

OMG RIDICULOUS
Cast Light.

You can get the first shot off on most enemies without alerting them. The old crystal ring shield could one shot them all.

I still dislike the wheelie skeletons -_-

The lantern sucks. I traded that crap in for something. Stupid bird.

It wasn't that hard. This is the strategy I used:
(Figured all of this on my own, no wiki/guides)
I made a giant axe that could 1 hit kill giant skelletons (and those vicious skelletons "dogs" too) if I 2handed it and used the jumping attack. Equiped dragonslumber boots, killed one at a time very carefully. Also brought an ivory catalyst and the light spell. It was stressful but doable. I still hate the place though...

The hardest parts of the game for me were Blighttown and Anor Londo. Blighttown is fucking hard as it is, but my gear was still trash when I got there, and on top of that it was a bit too scary and unsettling. Anor Londo had those two fucking archers, only one of the two times I've looked for help on the internet for this game.

S&O can definitely be the hardest part of the game if you aren't equipped properly. It was a real dick move making players reliant on the Lightning Spear and letting Giant Blacksmith upgrade to Lightning weapons by default can totally screw you in that fight because of how resistant Ornstein and super Smough are to lightning. Upgrading a +10 weapon with any sort of scaling to a +whatever lightning makes you do so much less damage in that fight.

I love learning that there is a lantern after I had completed this area.

heh the first time i got to tomb of giants and saw pitch blackness i turned right back around and left. i never went back until the endgame and by then i had the sunlight maggot helm.

There's stuff A LOT more scary than centipedes. But like others have said, you probably won't even tell. I didn't know it was one till I came online.

You could take a quick look at a video or pic and see what's in store. Or you could just get an online team and let them handle it whilst you avoid it.

I just figured this out, although my newly acquired fury sword is also doing pitiful damage. I think I'm just going to summon someone.

So, today with enough leisure time, I decided to do it and popped in Dark Souls to my 360 and take my first steps in it. I got to play a solid, uninterrupted hour or two.

The initial impression is underwhelming. Early 90s style menus, a bit underwhelming graphics. The movement and combat felt initially sluggish, reminding me of Monster Hunter. No directions, no signposting.

Slowly I started to get hang of it - keeping up the shield, as GAF suggested. I learned that the combat really wasn't sluggish but actually represented the weight of the weapons I used, so I needed to compensate for them in planning my attack. I learned that different enemies had different attack patterns and behaviors that I could memorize.

Quite soon after the beginning I belive I got what it's all about. There was a dragon boss, much stronger than I was, seemingly able to whack me on a few swipes. I kept on going back, getting my lost souls, trying again. I learned that I need to focus on the dragon, roll sideways when the hammer comes down, and backwards when the dragon jumps. Also, I was best finding my way behind it. Then just doing a quick strike, not getting too greedy with multiple strikes.

Completing the dragon took me some 10 tries (I haven't learned how to use the potion), but like people have suggested - each death was my fault. The sense of accomplishment I felt when defeating this one very early boss was incredible. It was a real effort, but I practiced, planned and did it.

It seems I need to be constantly alert and focused, my mind can't wander anywhere else while playing.

So, that was my first hour or two with Dark Souls.

EDIT - I went for Pyro / Master Key by the way. I hate looking for keys.

You killed the dragon in your first two hours? You're really not meant to kill him until much later, I think (though I guess most of us cheesed him with the arrow to the back glitch). Congrats.

what, really? haha. no, I did him with my first weapon. Learning when he strikes, rolling and swiping. It was doable.

I think he's talking about the tutorial boss. I don't think there's any dragon in this game with a hammer.

I guess it could be the Taurus Demon too but that's not really a dragon haha.

So I picked it up today, new even at the advice of some of you. I hope I enjoy it more than I did Demon Souls.

I don't see why you would enjoy this game if you didn't like Demon's. They're very similar.

Based on these first impressions, and how quickly you got into rhythm, you're going to love the rest of the game.

My suggestion is to never build your stats hybrid style. If you want to cast magic spells, pour all your stats into intellect (and whatever defensive stat you desire, I went with Stamina and Health) and build a magic weapon (it's very easy.) If you're going towards Strength/Dex, pick up Pyromancy spells along the way and only put your offensive points into either str/dex, but not both. If you end up trying to do a split, neither stat is going to be good compared to the non-stat scaling pyromancy or elemental weapons for a while, so those stats then become a waste.

Never go pure melee. It's possible, but stressful as hell. Skilling up pyromancy has zero consequence (other than having to farm a bit) so you're really just making things harder for yourself.

Once I figured that out, the game became a BREEZE. Min-maxing in this game turns you into a quasi-steamroller.

I also don't remember any centipedes ever in this game. o_o
