What is YOUR "forever game" ... This gen

That game that lasts you all gen you just play it all the time, in between other games, it never goes away, never gets old...

for me that game this gen is Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero.

RE9, Crimson Desert, Black Flag, 007, GTA 6, Wolverine, Phantom Blade 0 are all gonna come and go... But this goddamn masterpiece, as if from the Gaming Gods themselves will always be here.. Always ready for 1 more round.

What is YOUR forever game this gen?
 
Had to really think about it, but it's Hitman: World of Assassination for me. If I'm ever unsure of what to play, I have consistently found myself picking it throughout this gen to try a new strategy or experiment a different way. MGSV was my most played last gen, so I'm partial to sandbox style stealth I think.
 
Honestly COD multiplayer. Stupid dumb fun between single player games I typically play, either as a palate cleanser or while waiting for the next big release. Currently playing COD BLOPS 7 and BLOPS 1 (PS5) after wrapping up Black Flag Resynced the other day and waiting on Halo Campaign Evolved early access later this week.

The only game that even remotely approaches a forever game to me is Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I've said it before, but it's like my little zen rock garden.
 
Monster Hunter Rise still for me this gen, as it just had a more compelling loop that Wilds, and no one really competes with Capcom at doing this kind of a game.

Otherwise Against the Storm, Dead Cells, Deep Rock Galactic, and Heat Signature all get sporadic time from me in short sessions.

I can see Path of Exile 2 and Gran Turismo 7 joining that list, as I've been playing them pretty regularly.

Elden ring. It's not my favorite souls game, but I always find myself returning to it. Recently, I've been trying out PVP and it's pretty fun. I also highly recommend Convergence mod for some fresh weapon, spells, and bosses.
 
Europa Universalis V is that game for me. It still got some (a lot) of warts, but it's slowly getting to a good place and in a year it will be much better… unless Paradox does it dirty like Imperator.

Anyways, the game has issues but much like with EU4, there is nothing quite like it. Vicky 3 is too economy focused, CK3 is inbreeding simulator, Stellaris is awesome but it's not quite Grand Strategy and HoI4 has too short of a time span.

There are other cool grand strategy games but nothing quite Europa Universalis and they don't normally cover the same period in history. I spent 1000+ hours in EU4's 11 year time span and probably will spend the same for EU V unless Paradox stops supporting the game with DLCs.

Edit: I really hoped Starfield was going to capture that Skyrim magic, but lol at that one.

Modded versions of Fallout 3, New Vegas, Morrowind, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 will always be my favorite forever type of games no matter what gen. But if I have to limit it to games released this gen only than I guess Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth or Space Marine 2.

Against the Storm

I just launch and get to playing

It scratches the city builder/simulator itch without the hours needed to get there and since it's objective based you always something to work towards. Big plus is the roguelike nature works heavily in its favor!

It's not stressful even though it sounds like it
 
Not from this generation and I won't say I play it all the time but I return to No Man's Sky often.
I played it on release and I was disappointed, I went back to it in 2020 and it's been a recurring game since then.
I'm aware of the complaints about that most things look(ed) similar and it turns repetitive after a while but in my experience I regularly find things I've never seen before or feel new, all the updates to the game help a lot with that.

Not in that image but this year the game had 3 major updates, Remnant, Xeno Arena and Swarm. Next month is the 10th anniversary of the game so I guess they'll have some new content ready for the occasion.

Yeah I've mostly done that and it's okay. The parrying is just not as satisfying to me as DS3. Thats also bc there so many distance spell attacks from enemies. But I still have to beat Consort Radan without help. Then I'll probably try again.
 
I have no "forever" game, no matter how much I like the game, at some point I need to move on to new games.

Even with Elden Ring which I highly enjoyed, after 800 hours I was done with it.

I don't have a forever game. Once I finish a game, I move on. The only exceptions are Oblivion and Skyrim, which I've played through a few times. I might revisit them every 3–4 years, if that counts. I guess you could throw Halo in there as well.

To me a forever game is one that I can start quickly (and maybe finish quickly) because I only play it for a few minutes and no more than an hour.

So that would be Gradius, Tekken, Street Fighter, Final Fight.
 
FFxiv has been my go to since 2.0 (2013) , if pvp was still active I'd choose Dark Souls 3 and if pvp was better in Elden Ring I'd still play it but it's dogshit . I still play Metal Gear Online 3 (mgs5) from time to time for almost 10 years now and if Sony didn't kill Littlebigplanet servers I would still play and create shit in LBP3 .

If DCUO never became pay to progress/win I could've seen myself playing longer then I did which was about 5 years . PoE2 is fun, I can see myself going back to it every few leagues !!

I have a years worth of update to dive back into. At this point, Light No Fire is my most anticipated game.
