This whole thing still baffles me. It's like saying you're not going to listen to your favorite band's music anymore because they release digitally and not on CD. Isn't it the music (i.e. the games) that are the important part? People would really give up on the experience of playing your favorite stuff because it didn't come on a plastic disc actually worth ten cents? You never "owned" the game anyway. You owned a license to play it. And we are so far removed from what physical meant on carts and such, it's not even analogous to those days.

I've owned every Playstation that's come out, but this will be my first pass on their consoles. It's not just he Physical Media thing. Sony doesn't have any strong competition like they used to, and they've gotten too comfortable dominating the space.
  • Overabundance and hyper focus on Live Service games, and aren't shying away despite numerous failures.
  • Eliminating Physical Media entirely.
  • Already showed they will pull media that you purchased from you library without refunds or credit.
  • Most of their First Party Games are the same "Story Driven Third Person Adventure" game, starring an unattractive woman.
  • They're all in on AI (which I have mixed feelings on).
  • The Visual and Performance leap between PS4 and PS5 was minimal, and the same will be said for the PS6.
  • $1000 for a new console has next to no value when you own a Mid/High tier PC rig. Even if you approach it from a "I want their exclusives" angle, their AAA First Party titles just take far too long to develop. They're too few and far between.
So where's the value? For that price point, for what they offer, and for all the bullshit Sony has been pulling, I see the situation where the Negatives are far outweighing the Positives. I'm not gonna sit here and say "Sony betrayed me!" I get we are approaching End Stage Capitalism in this world, and companies are going to milk us fucking dry because they aren't decent people. It's the Scorpion and the Frog at this point. It's their nature at this point to only care about making more money and being Corpo scumbags.

All I can do at this point is do what's best for me. Right now my PC gives me 95% of what I want out of gaming. Access to most games, customizability and modding, somewhat better digital ownership, and better performance and visuals. I think PC and Nintendo is pretty much my future. Would love to see Microsoft make a comeback, because competition is healthy. Would love for Sony to be based again someday. But for now, this is where my head is at.

I'm not a Sony fan as in I only buy Sony hardware; I buy and play across various console brands.

But I have been a Sony fan during the PS4 and PS5 gens, after enjoying the Xbox 360 but going back to Sony when the Xbox One nonsense was revealed. Xbox lost me and Nintendo is a side console in modern times for me. (As a kid in the 80's and into the 90's, Nintendo was king.)

As of right now, my vote is Hard Pass on PS6. I buy both physical and digital, but removing physical as an option is gross and it isn't like Sony is suddenly going to run a fair and consumer-friendly marketplace. At least on PC the digital ecosystem has several competing storefronts, prices are generally cheap across the board and all the time, refund policies are decent, and there is emulation and modding. Sony is not going to compete with ANY of that. And then there is the possible pricing: if a PS5 Pro is $900 now, how does Sony release a PS6 for less than that, especially with their recent comments about not wanting to take the traditionally rough losses on new hardware for the first few years of a console's life?

I may get a PS5 Pro and just ride that out as long as I can. I have a Switch 2, and maybe Sony relents and eventually offers disc-based gaming again. I heard that they may offer a disc drive for the PS6, and I wonder if it is to play movies on. I use my PS5 to watch Bluray and 4K all the time. How the fuck can we lose that, too?

The price, features, and graphics would have to be quite nice. I don't plan on sticking with just Switch 2.

I am ready to support Steams initiatives if they can get more anti cheat on LINUX.

I may consider Helux, but those people suck too.

So maybe I'll just see if anything takes off, but I don't think Next Gen will fly off the shelves, and the whole thing is teetering a bit.

PS5 Pro will be getting a lot of cross gen games. If the PS6 is really going to be expensive it will sell significantly less than the PS5. Sony will be forced to release games on both PS5 and PS6 just to sell enough copies to recoup their investments in their mega expensive AAA games.

I'll skip PS6, l'll buy the few must have 1st party PS for the PS5 Pro and everything else I'll get on PC. There's no need at all for PS6. That thing is DOA.

If it has a good reason to buy at launch sure, if not, I can wait.

Digital-only is what it is. There was no way the next gen was going to still be using BD when physical sales are historically low, and they will try to save every dollar they can due to prices on ram and storage.

I wonder how real fans react to the last news.
I've played on PlayStation since the original and bought every single iteration of their consoles besides the PSP 2000 so I guess I would count?

Physical games production ending: I couldn't really care less personally but I understand a lot of people do and wish they still had a choice. Realistically this was always going to happen and the people clinging onto physical games were always going to end up disappointed.
PS3 and Vita stores closing: This one does suck, but again realistically we knew it was going to happen at some point. That doesn't mean I like it however.

Does any of this affect future buying decisions? Probably not. I will still buy the PS6 because I like playing on consoles, and I will buy the handheld as well assuming the price isn't absolutely retarded.

I've already started looking into other options. That said, if Sony's digital environment was more like Steam's (competing stores allowed, refunds, etc.) then the end of physical wouldn't be such a deal breaker for buying the PS6. As it stands now, though, Sony has not given any reason for me to invest in their digital only platform. As well, considering they just removed people's movies by the hundreds with no refunds and are closing two of their stores - all they've done is show why I shouldn't.

Just is what it is. As you get older imo you just run out of axes to grind and sure, I hate the move but I also feel like it could've been done 5 years ago with how we had already been thru a physical media discussion like this as people have been saying for years that Gamestop will die from no more disc's so here we are.

I get it but I also realize pc gaming isn't what it used to be either in many ways so pick your poison

I've been all digital since for half this generation and am not going back. Been 100% digital on PC with Steam forever.

I really don't care anymore if it's physical or not. I did when you could trade them in at gamestop for a decent amount but those days are over.

Not hyped for PS6, Sony have their Xbox One moment. Microsoft is dumb enough to not capitalize over.

I have a pro and a 5080. Sony will need to sell me hard on a PS6. I could probably afford one not bragging but I don't really feel the need for next gen right now. Sony has blundered and are quite lucky xbox blundered even worse otherwise they could have been feeling some pain.

They have the momentum from the PS4 generation but that can go away quickly and I'd say the PS5 output from a first party perspective has been pretty dogshit this generation bar a few standout titles. Maybe it's just my taste but they are really starting to miss the tastemakers like Yoshida etc.

Herman Hulst just doesn't have the eye for games. Sony need to course correct quickly as I think they will genuinely lose a lot of goodwill from the hardcore fan base.

Bit of a rant but right now I need them to show me why I need a PS6, I'm not buying blindly.
This is a big problem. The fact that Herman got promoted from a studio known for making bad games is an inditement of Sony. The only good game GG ever made was Killzone 2. Yes both Horizon games are terrible. Competent from a technology perspective but absolutely derivate and boring games.

How can you put a guy who doesn't know how to make a good game in charge of the studios? It's crazy. Look at all the garbage they've been greenlighting. Absolutely wasted the ps5 gen. Very few good games were released.

So much butthurt recently.
When was the last time any steam user bought a PC game on disc?
again huh

When was the last time a Steam user had to pay €80 for a game that was almost 6 years old, with no option to buy keys from cheaper stores and forced to pay extra for cloud saves?
Seriously what is with all of these drive-by dumbasses saying "PC is digital, why would you go there" then running away when someone points out storefronts there such as Steam are just way better at it?

Are these people trying to validate their "100% digital on consoles since day 1" by saying it out loud over and over again or something?

I voted that they "betrayed" me, though that's very dramatic...

I've been with Playstation since they entered the console business. I just feel like they're greedy and stupid. Won't buy a PS6 unless there's physical or they open up digital like Steam.

It might be the dumbest thing you've heard if you're not intelligent at all. If you have to buy digital, it's better to buy it on a platform that has competition for prices, easy ways to store your games, one that is form factor agnostic. It's entirely idiotic to commit to a digital platform that can revoke your content, it's difficult to pirate or backup games, etc. One that has no competition and as a result can fleece you on prices and services. More importantly, paying for online is the biggest scam I've ever seen.
exactly, at least on pc the digital content is preserved by crack, hack, and drm free game like gog, etc

I think the PlayStation 6 will have a disc drive (sold separately), given that Sony has officially stated that physical versions of older games can be released.

Even so, everything released from 2028 onwards will be fully digital.

The issue here lies with the Store and its pricing, since Sony has absolute control within that closed ecosystem.

I've spent days researching PC storefronts, and the competition is fierce; you can get games at very low prices.

I think Sony will continue to position boxed versions with codes at retailers. On the one hand, to keep them happy, and on the other, so that collectors still have something for their shelves. I also assume that these often will be somewhat cheaper than the PS store.

However, what will not happen is that there will be as many key sites as there are for Steam. Otherwise Sony could have saved themselves all the hassle, because they want to make more money with that move. Steam games often cost only €30–40, whereas on the PS store they are 79.99 Euro.

New releases on Steam are more expensive than the physical games I've been buying for PlayStation 5.

007 First Light costs €69.99 on Steam.

On PlayStation 5, the game is €63 at MediaMarkt (physical copy).

Halo Remake costs €59.99 on Steam.

The physical version for PlayStation 5 costs €54.95. (Amazon Spain)

The only real competitor to PS is Steam, and that's digital only.

Having said that, I'd switch to Steam if they improve their couch gaming experience. I don't have the patience anymore to mess with configurations and controller compatibility.

Full disclousure, if i was on handsome western salary(think 100k usd yearly) i would probably buy ps6 day1 for the simple reason no matter what sony decides financially, be it games at launch @80$ with barely any discounts, or 100$(or even 200$ down the line) with no discounts i could afford it.

Since im below 50k usd yearly(not a westerner, its not ez to be rich when ur country salaries are 3-4x lower from US ones) im simply too poor mofo to even consider it, even if sony had extreme quality and quantity i wouldnt be able to afford it.
Luckily for me many sony exclusives dont present value they used to do, they will likely be good enough to buy cheaply used, then sellback after 1-2months, sony simply erasing this option, so sux but what u gonna do.
Most of sony exclusives dont present enough value to buy it at 80$(in my country digitally it will mean over 100$)

Here example, brand new physical version of spiderman2, from store with extremly high rep, which i remember existed in the late 90s and sold psx/saturn/n64 games(i remember coz i bought tons of games from them, living in smalltown means i usually ordered online(back then from landline phone rofl, true og style :P )
Neo-Plus-nr-004-199841q4.jpg

https://www.ultima.pl/ct/playstation-5/gry/akcja/marvels-spider-man-2 under 50usd, which later u can sell for 30$ so basically u spend 20$ on that game
For comparision my countrys playstation store price:

https://www.playstation.com/pl-pl/games/marvels-spider-man-2/ over 90$, and thats spiderman2 which launched worldwide oct 2023, aka game is almost 3yo

So going all digital to me isnt upping prices a bit, its 4 to 5x price increase, obviously i cant afford it...

I will never understand how anyone sane would defend this, they will force you to pay whatever they want at scam prices but also you lose the ability to resell and lend the game.

Hysterical reactions? I would say reactions like yours are fanboy reactions and I can't believe how anyone is defending that shit no matter if it is Sony Nintendo and MS
Well nobody sane is defending this. It´s the gullible retards. People that would sell their house for scraps and then rent it back if some corporation tells them "that´s the future".

I never claimed otherwise, but Steam keys are usually cheaper than Steam itself and PS5 discs.

i don't consider myself a Sony fan, but i like consoles so its still pretty much the only option. Nintendo and Steam Machine are weak, Xbox is probably gonna still be trash or too expensive.

I did PC gaming in 2016 and it was cool at the time, but im not down to spend $2000 on a new PC.

We all know a single killer exclusive will bring half these doomposters right back to day one pre-orders
It didnt with demons souls, astro and gt7, those are 3 very diverse killer exclusives of top quality which we can buy on the cheap in physical form, nothing of that quality and value will be on ps6 coz even if we assume best case scenario bloodborne remake, gt8 and new astro will be at 80$, aka 240$, not like right now all 3 for under 100$ total...

What´s a real fan? I got my first Playstation back in 1996. Had a PS2, a 3, a 4 and a 5. Sold my 5 a few months ago because Playstation as a whole has gone to complete shit. The prices, the GaaS, the DEI slop, the complete lack of legacy software, the studio closures etc.

I used to love Playstation but there is nothing left of what i liked. And i´m obviously not going to buy a PS6. Not in a million years.

I've been with Sony from day one, but I'm probably not going to bother with the PS6.

I just don't trust with a digital library, I don't like that they've abandoned consumer choice and honestly, their first party line up just doesn't do it for me anymore.

It's all up in the air for me. I need to be persuaded to buy a PS6 and Sony is doing a shit job so far.

I was a SEGA kid once, then XBOX 1 and 360. Switched to PS3 at the end of the gen, then PS4 en now PS5. I'll just wait and see. My backlog is enormous and I don't care about the zeitgeist.
