No, the folks who are up in arms represent a very small minority. The numbers show the majority of sales have switched over to digital (85%, going by recent reports). Most of that audience won't even hear of this news, and the few protesters who are left over will mostly conform.

I sure hope so they reevaluate the situation, otherwise, to each their own, but no discs, is 100% a no buy from me.

At the very minimum they should make a disc add-on for the PS6 so that people can still play their PS4 and PS5 disc-based games. They could even sale their 1st party games for $10 more than the digital versions.

WTF isn't thinking about this simply financial concept at Sony? People would rather spend an extra $10 for the disc based game, than not having the option at all.

Depends. If too many of their retail partners and marketing affiliates pushback then I could see them "re-evaluating" their policy.

Also, if software and hardware sales for PS6 plummet or are significantly weak then yes, absolutely. Money talks.

Voted yes but it's pure hopium on my part.

The pushback they're getting from fans and retailers might be enough to get them to reverse course but it's 18 months away which is plenty of time for everyone hit the acceptance stage of grief.

They won't go back.

If they announced this, the infrastructure and contracts relating to manufacturing discs and disc drives were already being sunsetted. These takes years to unfold.

If they attempt to make a u-turn back, contract negoatiation would likely bring unfavourable deal against Sony. There's no turning back at this point.

Not to mention how retailers would feel about this.

This seems a bit strategic due to how early they announced it, so don't think they will go back on it.

But hoping I'm wrong and they do.

They are too arrogant. As long as one of the big 3 has physical games I'll get that console. Not buying a digital only console locked into an expensive ecosystem.

Not this time. This has been hoisted.

No. 85% of their sales are digital.
How many of those sales include games that are digital only and have no physical option?

It's disingenuously skewing data the same way when they try to say 60% of gamers are women when they are including mobile games where 70% of that market is compromised of women.

the ones crying the loudest on social media and posting their "cancelled psn" nonsense are the 15% who still buy physical. 85% moved on and are digital only. Sony will not make a u-turn for the small minority trying to proof something lol!!!!

After all the fuzz, I think they will.

Not now, and specially if Microsoft do something for once and try to capitalize on this with physical media support. They will have no other choice.

They mentioned this had been in the works for a while now. Only way a reversal has any chance is if people simply stop buying stuff from PlayStation and unsubscribe to their online service.

I don't see that playing out but who knows. PlayStation and even Xbox have in the past reverse course on policies that most of their customers didn't like. So it's possible, it's just up to us as gamers.

While I do think the digital vs. disk numbers are skewed by the number of small games that don't get a disk release, it would surprise me if they changed course. Oddly enough, the disks were their primary defense in keeping away anti-trust regulators. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out if "code-in-a-box" flops at retail.

I suspect they are looking at the hardware cost of a PS6 and the only way they can make the maths math requires a hefty subsidy, which in turn requires squeezing every user til the pips squeak to cover the subsidy, which requires all spending to be captured directly.

They likely cannot reverse even if they wanted to, because the model would no longer work.

At the end of the day it will come down to the value proposition. Most will soon get over the lack of physical if the console price is kept reasonable. They should be aware however that they are going to get gouged mercilessly for the rest of the gen to pay for it.

I think maybe. There's a lot of publicity surrounding this, and the memes are coming fast and furious. Sony is the clear villain right now, and the blow-back might be enough to make them rethink it.

When they jacked up the GamePass price, I cancelled my sub and sold my XSX to Gamestop the very same day. Many others took steps of their own.

A few months later, they dropped the price.

When the masses speak with their wallets, things change.

Here's hoping brand loyalty doesn't prevent those changes.

All I ask is they give us some kind of backwards compatible disc attachment. As long as I can get my library of PS4-5 games to transfer over I'm good.

As far as PS6 games being digital only, I don't like the idea of buying digital only from them, they have a bad track record there and the costs will be much higher than I can get on Steam. I will still buy PS6 but just use it as an 'event' system the same way I do with Nintendo, just buying the big exclusives. For everything else I'll just buy on Steam.

I'm afraid the entire industry is headed in this direction at some point. Sony knows it and ripped off the bandaid.

I don't agree with it, but it's inevitable.

Maybe it's time to start over again. Imagine just a new console that is doors to the past, what's old is new again. When I see what they do with some of the old style games these days, I always think I'd be happy to have a new console drop that is nothing but new old style games etc. I'd buy it

Thats because of the goodwill built by the PS4. That is no longer the case.
Yeah but what're you going to do? Go to Xbox, who are doing the same thing? Or PC, who did this almost 2 fucking decades ago?

Unless your answer is "Nintendo because they still have carts", your performative internet rage means fuck all.

The future is unavoidable. Move on, everyone.

Probably the PS6 will come without disc drive, but some hidden port somewhere...

Then, depending on the backslash, they could release a attachable disc drive

🤷🏼

If people aren't buying a PS6 then they are still on PS5 - still giving Sony money and Sony don't even have to pay the subsidy to sell them a PS6. It's win win for Sony.

Eh, give it 3 months and GamersTM will move on to the next outrage about a they/them slider or how Ubisoft ruined AC IV or something

Only way I see it actually happening is if MS says 'fuck it, Xbox Ultimate: any disc from any generation of Xbox — all playable here' and winning over gamers en masse

but they won't

Two thoughts:
How long until these are cracked and exploited?
Is there a way to pull this off with a disc? Like pressed and then a secure write to the inner reserved region?
No just something to verify that the game was purchased, a bit like how discs today redownload the entire.
