Microsoft might kill Obsidian too [Update] Schreier: "Xbox is keeping Obsidian"

Only way I'd feel anything but apathy for this would be if they announced a new big-boy RPG lead by Josh Sawyer and that they throw money at Avellone until he agrees to help them out.

...and publicly fire that retarded Art Director.

Lol, Josh is the worst of them all. He still gets uncomfortable when people ask him why he hired a minor to be the VA for a prostitute in New Vegas.

Obsidian is like their most efficient studio by far
Efficiency is calculated by units sold not by amount of crap you produce.
Obsidian really? Sure avowed and Outerworlds 2 were disappointments but I believe grounded did well and grounded 2 EA is soon.

Would be brutal.
All of their games in last 5 years aside from grounded bombed hard.
Also it is exactly about the time when Avellone left the company.

That being said Grounded is legit good game from them.

I don't think so, if Microsoft are serious about making Fallout and The Elder Scrolls a priority, then you can't just rely on Bethesda alone, MS will need other Studios as well and the next choice will be Obsidian!.

Hard to imagine in a world where Xbox is dissolving back into producing just known IP, they would close a potential Fallout factory.

I sunk a couple hours into it but couldn't really get into it. I don't know what the issue was, just seemed meh. I'm not writing it off though, I'll come back and give it another try when there's a lull.
Avowed is a builds rpg with great exploration aka all the best stuff has to be found but horrible, horrible characters aka designed for safe space gamers. Mechanics 10/10 overall 8/10 due to the characters.

Obsidian needs to reevaluate its characters with folks that love the genre.

What are you implying here? That Josh orderd the guys that were responsible for voice casting/recording to make sure that the minor voiced the lines?

It's not like giving them the Fallout IP will make their dicks grow back. They're gone Jim. It's best we accept and keep it moving.

All the people saying Avowed is shit, how many of you have actually played it, truthfully i mean?.
I gave it three earnest, 3-5 hour attempts on a new save, and came away progressively more disappointed each time. Spaced across numerous patch versions. It's completely hollow, cynical and bereft of the human spirit.

Estimated cost of GTA6 by analists is around $2Bilion
MS bought acti-bliz for $69 Bilion. Equivalent of 34 GTA6 game budgets.
Instead of getting AAAAAAA games they shut down studios and produce AA games no one buys.

The amount of idiocy and mismanagement is so peak that there probably won't be anything topping that in history.

I truly think that they thought it will be like when MS bought Minecraft from Notch. No effort buy and no effert management because Minecraft would grow regardless of stupid MS ideas.

I mean whoever thought Phil Spencer, a man who failed to manage 5 studios, would be able to do 20 was probably not the sharpest tool in the shed.

It's a studio located in California with a lot of employees. The fact that Grounded is profitable doesn't justify the negative numbers they must be showing.

Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, didn't do that well, not because Obsidian couldn't make better games anymore, they were told to make them for Gamepass, if Obsidian had stuck to their 1st trailer, and made their version of Skyrim, it would be a different story, Obsidian can still make top RPG's, but the management need to let them.

I'm actually surprised they lasted this long.
With how broken Fallout New Vegas, KOTOR 2, Alpha Protocol, and Dungeon Siege 3 were, they were bound for the guillotine for a while.
I get the impression that Outer Worlds 1 greatly exceeded Microsoft's expectations (despite the general "whelmed" sentiment among gamers) and MS thought that Avowed would be an even bigger hit.

Yeah, I agree it's fair game since Obsidian blew their load with games already and probably won't ship something else meaningful for another 2-3 years which is what they don't want to invest in.

But just seems like re-allocating them would be the obvious chose compared to closing if they want to double down on everything.

It makes no sense. I have a feeling that Microsoft might want to kill Gamepass and they want to get rid of these studios first, otherwise how will they release content for Gamepass with less studios?

Its so bizarre

Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't that before. You could kill their studio and wouldn't make a difference to people.

you know what?.....:messenger_unamused:.... fuck you microsoft.

Anger Rage GIF

What did all these studios expect, making games for an audience, comprised of a vocal political driven minority, that only complains about what videogames should be, but that never buy games.

If they were any smart, which they arent, they would knock on Hasbro's door. They could take ten years "developing" the new Baldurs Gate game just to cancel it afterwards.

That piece of shite is the problem with all of these woke studios…..they all need to be sacked asap. Purge this virus from existence.

agreed. better to purge the studios and replace the talent than to close them down. Obsidian has always been a studio i liked (along with arkane texas, tango game works and quite a few of MS other studios) kick out the toxic elements in the studios and get back to biz. this 'kill eevrything that wont make us a billion dollars' ethos is gonna leve them with nothing but COD at this rate.

It's mostly wokie studios, so there's a profit to it, socially at least. :nougat_rofl:

Most efficient studio at producing Gamepass filler you mean ? Avowed and Outer Worlds 1 and 2 were pure woke trash of the worst kind. The Obsidian that made Fallout New Vegas and Alpha Protocol is long gone bro, killing the studio for good would be a merciful act at this point.

Obsidian can't do rpgs anymore. It's clear if you played their latest games. In fact they actually degraded. None of their newer games come even close to sizes of their older games. Awoved instead of being Skyrim from Obsidian was 25h game.

I think they bought idiocy that ambision is wrong thing and it is better to release mediacore smaller games rather than hugely ambitious buggy projects.

People play games to be amazed not to push pencils. Amazing buggy mess is better than the best polished turd.

I am playing Outer Worlds 2 right now. It is a good well made game, but it still hasn't clicked. I pick it up...put it down...have little desire to go back and play. It didn't come close to sucking me in the way the New Vegas did or even the first one.

Yeah, but who changed that, strange it was when Microsoft bought Bethesda, you don't know they can't do them without giving them the chance to prove it, we all know games have had agenda and gamepass forced onto them in recent years, that's why games haven't sold and Phil got the boot.

Except for Obsidian from this list, how many games were they able to release since the aquisition?
Complusion? 1 which flopped hard
Ninja? 1 which flopped hard,
Undead Labs? None so far
Double Fine? I think 3? only Psychonauts had good scores but how many sales?

MS bought these small studios to make/use them as a Gamepass machine.
Means good games, short dev cycles and alot of games.
With that many studios MS should be able to release at least one game per month !

Just look at the dev cycles we now have.
In the past the devs were able to make 2-4 games in 4 years. (golden PS2 era)
Now most of these devs cannot produce a game in 5 years and nobody plays those games.
They had the freedom, budget and time to make anykind of games they wanted.

What happened? We all know the results ...

As harsh it may sounds for all of those people that (might) loose their jobs:
If there are no sales/results, you are out.
Some of these devs were "saved by MS" or had no financially backing for a new games.

Maybe this way MS will be able to weed out the woke/bad devs and can reset the brand..

As you can see it is not good leaving Sony alone in the console space and competition is always good for the business / consumer.

The only two games I think I've ever played by Obsidian is New Vegas and the first South Park. Both of these games were incredible and were probably made by people that work for other companies now. How sad.😔

Honestly, letting their studios work on whatever they wanted, even though it sounds nice in theory, was the most retarded decision Microsoft could have made.

There were so many dream projects they could have created given the combination of studios they own. All they had to do was read what people wanted when they started all these acquisitions, put them to work on that, and they could have had an incredible generation, instead of releasing so much trash that nobody wanted.

Oh well.

Decision to keep smaller footprint for their games was concious OBSIDIAN decision. I am member of rpgcodex and whole forum is basically blackisle/obsidian hug box. Or at least it was until they started to produce shit. And there are so many members there that catalogued everything about them over the years.

In general it was always main owners want to get aquired by some big publisher. They never wanted to be indie. Secondly after Falllout New Vegas and their contract failure following that they decided they won't ever make complicated games they ship with bugs which means downscaling their ideas and ambitions which caused problems down the line which lead to Chris Avellone (one of the founders and co-owners) leaving.

Later on MS actually wanted to give them truckload of money to upgrade their ambitions but Obsidian choose not to scale up in order to avoid layoffs afer bigger projects (whole studio is kind of sort of like close knit/family) out of which came Avowed. MS wanted it to be big open world RPG like Skyrim and Obsidian said no.

Alas they aren't big studio thanks to this and they will probably survive this. Probably getting bought by someone else.

That being said, losing Pillars of Eternity IP after finally having it must sting like shit. As much as POE2 sucked it needed different direction. The design itself was pretty good.

shit, we'll get 'em next time boys, don't lose hope

I wouldn't trust Shierer. Remembre that in corporation different people don't talk to each other and decisions are made at different levels of ladder with people not knowing a single thing until they get email that their access to company computer has been revoked.

Jason Schrier immediately has come out to deny the obsidian false reports.

But I don't believe he said anything about Arkane or Undead so... Not looking good for them.
