Gothic Remake |OT| Return to the Colony

I tried this for a bit (just killed a molerat and a couple scavengers on my way to old camp). It seems pretty fitting honestly. About as rough and janky for today as the original seemed for its day. I think I'll enjoy it and it will be the way to play it moving forward if they haven't fucked something up.

Edit: sucks, relic of a pc shat the bed at old camp, it was scraping by at 30fps previously but now it's too much for it. Oh well, another game to play after upgrade/overhaul/never.

Looks like the game is not doing that well at retail, already down to $23.99 on sale.

Didn't they sell 500,000 copies in 24 hours and the devs said that's way above what they projected?

Console version is bad so selling well in retail likely isn't in the cards. PC first kind of title so if it can hit 1M we should see a gothic 2 remake I hope.

Pretty sure vast majority of copies sold was on PC.

Consolebros are idiots who don't know what's good for them. Whining all the time about weak first party output while ignoring masterpieces like this one. Honor to the exceptions.

To be fair console version barely is 30fps. I'd pass on it too.

Shitty Port with 30 Frames? No Buy.
It is that easy

Your information is a bit out of date, mate.

Aside for beign frankly a bit of a retarded polemic in general, since it gets applied to minor throwaway characters that had two lines each in the entire game even in the original...
These girls are now back to having their "skimpy outfit" that you seem to care so much about.

Excuse me

This wasnt retarded. It was an abomination

Thank god players called it out and we got instead good looking ladies as it should because that is what the original game's vision intended

I don't like 30fps either, but I would assume it is a fairly standard way to play for consoleros. GTA6 might be 30fps game, would it stop any console gamer from playing it? Not many.
I think the reason for lack of 60fps is the weak ryzen in consoles, the amount of NPCs can be heavy on CPUs.

Yep, the question is not "will be Gothic 2 Remake good"? Because Alkimia only has to stick to the formula of this Remake and Gothic 2 Remake will be fine.
hope its been confirmed they are doing 2, I never played the original gothic 1 so this remake is completely new to me, I love the game, its great! 👍

15 hours in an breaking the game all over the place. Great stuff! Got the best sword, but still cant get to the armor. Only on chapter 2

Runs and looks great imo. Although 5080

I got to Xardas and now his quest requires that I get a piece from a bunch of random big monsters scattered around map. I've already killed these plenty. The weird "run around and fetch these things"-iness of these missions is starting to burn me out tbh.

"I'll allow you to go upstairs but first you need the heart of a stone golem, an ice golem, and a fire golem!" (thankfully, these were all like 10 minute walks away each so not the worst)

"You have to make a standard to be accepted there, but it must be made from the tongue of a mothershark, the horn of a shadow beast, the skin of an ultra demon...."

Even worse, it doesn't give you a hint where to find these things at all and they're in different parts of the world. The quest giver basically just goes "fuck off and figure it out". At least give a bestiary or something to research.

Also, I can't finish the "Rogue Camp" quest. I had it from Thoras but I switched to the new camp and Lee wont take the info. Quentin doesn't have any new dialogue options either. Super annoying having to run back and forth to these locations to not get any kind of pay off or quest progression.

Also, apparently, since I progressed past the fire mage section in the Old Camp, I'm locked out of getting the magic circles? wtf?

I love this game but the last third of it is feeling more jank/unfinished than the rest.

There is something I want to criticize about the game so far. I think there is too much backtracking. I dont mind backtracking in a game when things change in the world, like npcs, new enemies or even new areas. But I am in Chapter 4 and the backtracking is starting to annoy me because I am already sick of being in the same areas, I want to see something new

I guess the original game was like this too but its something that I believe stands out as a negative in this game

The original game had speed potions so you would run really fast but i think they are not available in the remake. You have the scavenger you can ride on instead.
But yeah backtracking is annoying for sure.

I see. Well in any case I see as a negative, backtracking in videogames must be done correctly because otherwise you get tired of coming back and forth through the same places

The series also has fast travel in the form of teleport runes.
Which I think it's the best balance you can strike in this type of game, where you initially force the player to experience the world (and its distances) at a slow and deliberate pace and only later on, when the novelty is starting to fade out, you introduce a more convenient skip mechanism.

Still, admittedly Gothic 2 balanced that particular aspect better than the first, by virtue of waiting a bit less to introduce its runes and by making them more numerous in general (so extending your options for warping points).

Doesnt help the fact that the map is very small so you see the same panorama dozens and dozens of times.

It get a bit better when you have the runes to fast travel between camps.

That's true although honestly I dont have a big issue with going back and forth if at least there were new events or npcs interactions. The problem is the world is very static unless there is some story scripted moment so it becomes annoying. Its a shame because I think this is still a good game but they should've fixed this.

Like giving the runes to fast travel earlier would help a lot

They fixed this in the sequel, brother.

Yep, the sequel is even better than Gothic 1. The bad thing is i wanna play Gothic 2 after i finish this one but i want to wait also for the Alkimia remake, idk what to do, honestly. You guys have any ideas?
Then again, the remake will take another 2-3 years, i think i'm gonna play Gothic 2 Gold now.

The game has a lot of old games goodness but also a lot of old games shortcomings, that's why i would never score a 9.

7,5-8-- would be my score in a real score scale where good games dont start at 9,5\10, also, i'm extremely stingy with scores :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I unlocked the mount as fast as i could to alleviate the problem a bit.

Is this meant to be any good? I noticed in the PlayStation store it was sitting at about 3 stars.,,which generally means something is a dumpster fire.

Finished this morning. Overall, while not perfect, it is one of the best remakes ever made and something my 14 year old me could only dream of back when I played the original. 78 hours (steam time, so incl. reloads), did all quests and exploration I could (and still missed at least one quest I know of).
Had about 5 crashes, no other noteworthy technical issues. Beautiful graphics, ran well at mostly consistent 60fps (only dropped to 50s in some heavily populated Old Camp places). Gothic's atmosphere and qualities perfectly preserved and enhanced. Even enjoyed the ending dungeon which I disliked in the original. One point of slight criticism is the abrupt ending, there really should have been ending slides, but then again Gothic 2 is the ending slide so I can forgive that.

Basically this is a fantastic immersive RPG, in a similar vein as Kingdom Come, and all RPG fans should play it. But they won't because it does not have AAAAA budget or japanese developers making it. Fucking hell.

It's doing fine on PC (where most of its user base has always been anyway) and frankly it could become an even better success story if they get their shit together and iron out the technical issues currently plaguing the game (bugs and iffy performances).

Admittedly they aren't exactly speedrunning fixes so far.
Two patches released and they were mostly focusing on inconsequential shit no one cared about (like removing items deemed "too powerful" from the early game), while annoying bugs have gone unaddressed and in some case (like the last one) even added with the update.

There where some problems on release, like game freezes each hour of playtime, locked 30 fps. They added a 60 fps mode, a Quality/Performance mode, and a fps cap mode, fixing the freezes too, I think that explains the rating. But IMHO it is one of the best RPGs I have played since Morrowind. But you gotta be well informed of where you are stepping into before a buy, read some reviews and forums opinions first.

Console version is kinda rough, that's probably why.

Or just people expecting a less old school game not used with the jank and lack of map markers.

I love there are no map markers but i'll be honest i did have to look up locations on the net from time to time otherwise i still would be looking for them, lol.

You can put map markers on your own in the map, you just have to buy a map first.

But yeah some quest description are pretty vague.
