The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

I never would have thought that a handheld Zelda game could pull me in like this again. Normally, my New 3DS XL is a console I pick up every now and then for short sessions, but never really use for long periods to actually finish a 3DS game. As far as I can remember, I've only completed two games on it so far: Ocarina of Time, and now the credits of A Link Between Worlds are rolling.

I still don't really know how to categorize the game. Is it a sequel, reboot, or prequel? I have no idea. What I do know, though, is that it definitely belongs among the three best Zelda games I've ever played.

And after Tears of the Kingdom was rather disappointing for me, I'm honestly glad that a 13-year-old game managed to restore my faith in the series.

For me, the soundtrack was already just as good as the soundtrack of Breath of the Wild.

The dungeons are incredibly well designed. The gameplay mechanic that lets you tackle the dungeons in any order gives the player a huge amount of freedom, making it far less linear than basically all the other classic Zelda games, and it's implemented incredibly well. Even the minigames — with the exception of Octoball — were fun.

The graphics are phenomenal. I already have a soft spot for the art style used in the Link's Awakening remake, but here, combined with the incredibly well-implemented 3D effect, the whole game is an absolute joy to play in 3D. In other games, I often had to disable the 3D effect because it was either poorly implemented or caused headaches during longer play sessions. In A Link Between Worlds, even that aspect was executed amazingly well.

The story was also surprisingly good, especially for a Zelda game. I usually don't expect an incredible story from the series, but the twist at the end genuinely caught me off guard in a positive way during the final battle. Yes, even on a handheld, it's absolutely possible to create a gripping Zelda experience (and at this point I'll spare myself the debate about whether the Switch counts as a handheld or not. I personally don't carry it around everywhere because it's too big and cumbersome).

The puzzles are great, the items are interesting, the controls are as intuitive as ever and exactly how they should be. There's more than enough content, side quests, good pacing — honestly, everything about the game just works.

I genuinely struggle to find any major criticism that would bother me enough to keep the game from deserving a 5/5 rating.

So yeah, hats off to Nintendo — they absolutely nailed it with this one.

Edit: if a Mod could put LTTP in the thread title, I'd appreciate it. Thought the tag alone would be enough to mark it as an LTTP title.

That game was incredible. I know the 3D gimmick was a cool part of the game, but I'd kill for a Switch port.

I really enjoyed this game. I like it better than ALTTP even. I felt it had more interesting NPC interaction and that the overworld felt more alive than it did in ALTTP. I need to replay this one. Definitely an underrated Zelda gem.

Edit: might even start a replay tonight.

One of us….

I bought a 3DS just for this game! Loved it. Only bought the Snake Eater 3D version as the other title I played on the machine before Animal Crossing took over my wife's life at the time and I never played the 3DS again.

Nintendo still owes Sideway New York royalties for ripping off their "squish to the wall go 2D" stuff. Yes, Sideway did it first.

Incredible game, I absolutely love the painting mechanic and the puzzles related to it.

Too bad it's still stuck on 3DS. This definitely deserves a remake, or at least a re-release on more modern hardware.

I also just recently played it for the first time. really good.

I'm also glad I played on a modded New 3DS, because the game has some framedrops, but with a modded New 3DS you can boost the clock speeds as if it were an enhanced game to iron out most of the drops.

It's funny that ALBW is essentially the Tears of the Kingdom to ALTTP's Breath of the Wild. Same map, an added gameplay gimmick to shake things up, enough differences to call it a different game even if you can never shake off the feeling that the two are more alike than you'd like to call them two completely different games.

But apparently with ALBW, Nintendo was clever enough to confuse people as to what the game really is.
Is it a remake? A reimagining? A sequel, even if it clearly isn't? I remember being flummoxed by so many people being adamant that "nah bruh, it's a TOTALLY different game, can't you see?!", even if 90% of the major stuff is exactly where it was in ALTTP and the dungeons have pretty much the same themes they had before. Even the open-endedness of the adventure is a pretty moot point when it's so easy to buy every item pretty early, you don't really have to make major choices there.

Anyway, it's a great game.

Yeah I really enjoyed it when it came out. Wasn't it a true sequel to A Link to the Past at least in Japanese marketing?

I've never actually properly played ALttP. I've left it this long aswell as Super Metroid and Earthbound because I think they'll remake them for Switch / Switch 2. I thought the same about Super Mario RPG now there's rumours of a Super Metroid remake. SNES games are easy money for Nintendo and they'll run on the original Switch as a bonus.

I don't think it's better than Echoes of Wisdom but it was still a pretty good game. It's one of the best feeling Zeldas to play, great feedback with the movement, combat and the painting transformation.

Other than Hyrule Castle, does BOTW even has a soundtrack?
There are a few decent tracks but none of them have a real cresendo or peak at the right time so they end up being forgettable. It's actually a problem throughout the entire game's design which honestly makes me wonder if it was intentional.

I only played it on New 2DS XL. Does the 3D play into the puzzles?
Not really from what I recall. At least not in the same way as, say, Super Mario 3D Land where they use a lot of optical illusions for the puzzles.

But there's definitely some thought put into the design of the game overall based on the 3D-effect. Tower of Hera is especially memorable to me, where you get a lot of depth between layers of the tower and get catapulted towards the screen using the switches throughout the dungeon as you climb.

I have a modded 3DS but boosting the clock speed somehow didn't cross my mind. I had a few slow downs here and there, nothing major, but I guess you're right.

Fantastic game. I can remember sitting with my in a very uncomfortable position so I could charge my 3DS and continue playing. when the battery got low

Great visuals, fun to play, addictive... just all round good fun. A solid 10.

Great soundtrack too:

(I love the way instruments are added as the tune progresses.)

i think i need to replay this game, i had blast with this game waaaay back before. and the overworld tune, kakariko village theme, is still often played on my music player. funny thing is, i recall that game had 90's feelings

You liked Echoes of Wisdom that much? To me, it's easily the worst Zelda since the DS days…

The overall sound design of BOTW and TOTK is phenomenal, so yeah, it was definitely intentional to not have easily hummable melodic tracks there.
