Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

10 pm completed hour CCU. Peak reached at 15.2k which is another new low. Squeaked above 15k. Huge drop in rankings at the bottom, including under 84% (almost ranked 6,000+ now)
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Today's peak at 15.2k is -73.1k or -83%

Today vs yesterday: 15.2k vs 15.7k (-0.5k or -3%)

Yesterday's low 4.8k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 4.7k

Wed vs Wed: 15.2k vs 18.4k (-3.2k or -17%). A bit better than the usual historic -20%

Alternate method to estimate peaks and valleys (ballpark ratios)
On normal weekdays, 3.3:1. For example, a peak 20k will have a low of 6k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Full on collapse, even people who like the game are quitting, and unless you do crossplay it's hard to find matches on console. Considering the sales estimates it's possible less than 2000 people are playing this on console at peak times.

I didn't think Sony would shut it down but I also didn't think the player base would get this low. I doubt anyone is buying cosmetics either. It's impossible to justify continuing to maintain this game with this audience.
 
I don't know that it shuts down, but if the decline continues and Season 2 lands with a resounding flop(which looks likely) it'll go maintenance mode sometime after.

I think when in June S2 drops is important as well. End of June is 3 more weeks of this. S2 should be early June. If they delay S2 I'm not sure if it would hurt or help.

Half of Sony's brand and popularity is in it's image, and I think having a failure of this magnitude limping along with hardly any players would be a much bigger stain on Sony than just outright killing it. We've already seen them do it once.

People like him that do the head in sand bullshit and pretend the fucking obvious isn't obvious are so annoying. Anyone with eyes can see what's been happening at these companies and how that infects their products. And even if you want to pretend that they didn't intentionally dog whistle this shit, the community for this game has a high percentage of gender freaks and sexual perverts defending it and there is a reason for that.

Western devs have spent the past decade inserting (word chosen intentionally) their perversion into the games they are making. They are open about it. They don't hide it. It's not a secret.

But if you point it out, you're akshully the pervert. Nice trick they got there. It's not working anymore though.

Shadow and Order the D2 update is June 9th so it may be late June for Marathon(yeesh). The D2 update has already been bumped once, so if they do it again to make room for Marathon that will piss off D2 players bad. It would piss me off and I don't even play D2, lol.

I've mentioned that I think current Marathon players are just old D2 players and all Bungie has done is move deck chairs around, so D2 update may pull some off Marathon. It's a great jumping off point. They played Marathon for a season, was super fun, now jump back into the game you love D2 and abandon Marathon when the wipe happens. I think that could happen to some extent as I think a lot of Marathon players are also D2 players. Marathon streamers are also Bungie streamers.

It's good that most people realize how dogshit those characters are and I'm guaranteeing that is easily the biggest reason nobody wants this steaming piece of shit game with those fetish ass weird ass lookin characters. Nobody wants that, it isn't cool it isn't fun it's just awful all around.

I just don't think this could've happened to a more arrogant smug studio like bungie, it's why I love this... They think they are untouchable and this has been absolutely beautiful watching everyone shit on these stupid fucks

This denotes revenue, correct? See this is why I'm saying they moved players to the less profitable game. Marathon has no MTX value and D2 is ALL MTX. The eververse is the most famous MTX store besides fortnite, lol. D2 players generate lots of revenue from just playing but Marathon after the up front cost has nothing to sell. This was always going to happen. I don't think it's gonna sell a ton at full price ever again so F2P with a greatly expanded MTX option is in the cards eventually. They need to make players in Marathon profitable like they are in D2.

I believe so. I've seen posts on the subreddit meming on the MTX about how garbage it is. That is, people playing the game, being core to the community, absolute blast havers, who excitedly want to pay more money for the game and to not because the MTX is disappointing even them.

But Concord was different, because of the low player count, they could shut the game down and refund everyone. With Marathon, there are well over a million who paid for it, and to shut it down they would have to refund everyone or get sued. They can't do that, so at worst the game will just stop being supported.
 
Sooner or later even if hermen "the hitman" hulst keeps blind eye for bungie's performance hiroki tiktoki will notice numbers in the books look artrouciously bad and he will do the deed instead, with numbers like those i think its not even matter of months but weeks xD

But I think it's true that online discourse is still just that online discourse. I think the numbers of the masses don't care about what online discourse, if a product looks good they will buy it and that's why games can do well even if the online communities are shitting on it.

Its not that nobody is swayed by online discourse but not even to just outright destroy a game, that to me is solely on the devs when and if it happens

For games that need console to succeed, at least in the US, I don't think negative online reactions can cause many good games to tank. If a game is fun the word of mouth (and marketing efforts) will generally break through IMO. Heck, look at Hogwarts.

But I do think repulsing the core audience can tank an average or mediocre game quickly. Marketing works, no doubt about it, but how many games can afford big marketing campaigns during live sporting events? And without a big campaign like that you do need the core audience talking the game up IMO. I just don't see how you reach the general console audience without either massive campaigns shown where average dudes will see it, or positive word of mouth from their nerdier friends (cores) who do pay attention.

So yeah, I do agree with you that online discourse matters most of the time, but good games will probably succeed anyway IMO. And frankly, I think everyone knows that. The people shit talking some of the most recent flops who say online discourse does not matter are, more likely than not, just poking fun at the people who said they didn't matter for years before the games flopped. But that's no free pass to the industry people raging about negative online discourse. Those fools made their own beds IMO.

Most of core audience(aka based males) despise concord/highguard/marathon and upcoming horizon gaas/fairgame$ so its not even matter of reading comments on the net about it, its how majority of potential customers think about those games, that affects their sales obviously, and sideeffect of what our pov is- forum talk/bad word of mouth.

When u got professional journos selling their souls and shilling for low quality games and bumping their metacritic scores it has some effect on sales, but relatively minimal, if it had big effect tons of woke games who are bad but with relatively decent or even high metascores wouldnt flop, yet we know its not the case- almost all of them flop hard :messenger_smiling_hearts:

Basically u gotta differentiate genuine grassroots movement(opinion/viewpoints of majority or at least big chunk of core gamers) vs artifically manufactured hype/positivity or negativity like for example sellout journos do for or against many games(recent victim of journos hate is crimson desert, yet big chunk of gaming audience loved and bought the game so journos efforts were in vain :P, there were many more examples like that, including other korean devstudio game- stellar blade, and before that kcd1/2, witcher3 or space marine2- basically if game is against "modern audience" cuckhold trend it gets shamed by "industry elites" and sometimes even ppl outside of gaming industry with huge negative campaigns manufactured against it- luckily usually gamers are smart enough to vote with their wallets and not listen to those snakes ).

In the end lets not forget we as males are not easily affected by social shaming, biggest proof of that is us here on gaf, most of us are old farts who remember gaming in the 80s and 90s, from when we were small kids we were always told gaming is for nerds/losers/kids only and we still didnt give a damn, coz we all simply loved videogames, thats huge difference between males and teenage girls, those easily follow trends and need to co-sign with others whats "cool" ;)

This is a cool disccusion you guys are having. I am digging it.

So, a great game that resonates with its intended audience and budgetted accordingly will never be harmed by online criticism. Full stop. It won't. AND, if the devs take the criticism to improve on their game, it will only help the game (example: Crimson Desert).

But, online discourse in places like this have a carry over effect that others will talk about elsewhere. If the discussion and points being made are sound and make senses, it can shape the perception of games or policies.

So if the game in question already has major issues, be it in quality or budget or ignoring their audience, discourse can absolutely help sink it.

TLDR: Discource can only hurt games with that have fucked up issues to begin it. Discourse will never kill a great game.

Yeah, Sony probably is waiting on the game for a lot of factors (the "wichever loses less money option"). I believe there is a deadline in wich they are going to pull the plug, there are waiting to avoind legal trouble, but if the game comes back to be sustainable they are going to keep it alive.
 
Good lord. It can't possibly make economic sense for Sony to keep supporting this game and making content for it, can it?

Could probably make a guess at how much money BF3 has made to make it go above Marathon in earnings. Game had a very low CCU before the sale, so you could guess that most numbers are new buyers. It'll be a wide bracket as likely most people will have bought the game and not played it.

But let's guess it was between 20,000 and 50,000 sales, which I think is pretty generous, I wouldn't argue against someone saying the number is lower. That would put total earnings to $30,800 <> $99,500 in a day. I'm feeling it'll be closer to the lower end on that, and the game is 12 positions higher than Marathon.

When it's the same as his own idiot opinions is bungie was important to pretty much all of us and they shit all over what the majority care about and want, it's as simple as that, being right leaning has nothing to do with it its about the fact I wanted more games like what bungie offers or I wanted more destiny, yes my beliefs and theirs will obviously differ but it isn't a political anything to follow CCU numbers outside of feeling burned by bungie
