[Bloomberg] Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC (Ghost of Yotei port and other internally developerd games scrapped)

Sony Group Corp. no longer plans to release its big PlayStation 5 games on PC, a major shift in strategy that sees the video-game maker returning to console exclusivity after six years of flirting with multi-platform releases, according to people familiar with the company's plans.

Online games such as Marathon and Marvel Tokon will still be released across multiple platforms, but single-player titles such as last year's samurai hit Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming action game Saros will remain exclusive to PlayStation 5, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren't authorized to talk publicly about the company's strategy.

The people cautioned that things could change in the future due to the unpredictable nature of the video-game industry and that Sony's plans are constantly shifting. But in recent weeks PlayStation scrapped plans to bring Ghost of Yotei and other internally developed games to PC. Two games made by external developers but published by PlayStation, Death Stranding 2 and the upcoming Kena: Scars of Kosmora, are still planned for release on PC this year.

There are likely a few reasons behind this shift. One is that several recent PlayStation games have not sold well on PC. A faction within PlayStation has also expressed concern that releasing their games on PC risks damaging the console's brand and will hurt sales of the PlayStation 5 and its successors, according to the people familiar with Sony's inner workings.

Lack of exclusivity was gona kill any chance of PS6 being a success I think.

*Also they probably lost some of the inital sales they used to get cause of the *ill just wait for the PC version mantra*. Losing sales in one place to get it in another is not a profitable outcome. Some PS5/PC owners will finally buy yotei just because of this news.

Just my opinion.. Im not an analyst but this seems like the pulse of the gaming community from what I have seen.

Sony showing Microsoft how its done, and besides when you are in a position of power, you don't have to branch out your catalogue, unlike Microsoft..

I could have told them it was a bad idea when they started down this road. I have no idea why every company wants to give Valve/Steam everything... you are basically just helping to build an invincible competitor.

I also think Valve caused a bit of this with their Steam Deck and Steam Machine initiative. It no doubt gave Sony pause and made them question why they are giving another handheld / console their games.

They probably decided the money they were making from the PC ports wasn't enough to give up their console exclusives, their goal is to get people into the PlayStation ecosystem and you can't really do that if they sell first party games on PC.

I also think that new Xbox being a PC hybrid probably had something to do with this decision.

Sugarcoat it however you want, reality is the ports weren't profitable.

Fuck. I couldn't give a shit about their big studios' output but I really wanted Saros. Returnal is the best game of the generation. I ain't buying a PS5 for it though.

Ah damn it, I really didn't want to buy a ps6. If they can get back into gear of actually putting out decent 1st party games again I might have to if it's not coming to pc.

Oof......thinking of Nixxes employees right now

I think they'll be fine. They can be used as a support studio for other projects. Still, dumb move to buy a whole studio for one purpose and backtrack 5 years later.

Hopefully, they don't get closed down.

This is dumb, PC bros aren't gonna buy a PS5 so Sony is just gonna end up losing revenue and relevancy from not having their first party games reach a wider audience.
This is not about PC players buy a PS5. Simply is Sony realizing this strategy is only getting PS5 players (now former PS5 players) buying a PC
