My views on the game didn't change at all. Still a 6/10. Grace
gameplay was… ahem.. the saving grace. The story and characters were… ok? Functional, I guess? Except for Grace's constant stuttering though. I even tried to fool myself by thinking may be Capcom was bold enough to give the heroine an actual speech disability but…
nope, the epilogue proved that it was just amateur voice acting. Can't convey anxiety or fear wihihihihithouhowhowhowt stuhuhuhuhutering through the entire game in
exactly the same pattern. Give the girl an award will ya? So much talent out there getting no recognition at all, while I'm almost certain this high school grade performance will get nominated.
The only thing that made me go "whoa" in the latter half was the sheer graphical fidelity of cutscenes (so many of them looked like straight up CG on the pro) and the
. Only because I didn't see that coming in an RE game.
The boss fights were absolutely, irredeemably trash tier. Such basic and predictable move sets with non existent level design. Telegraphing so far in advance that I would sometimes miss the parry window because I was unnecessarily waiting for them to complete the slothful animation. So much standing around doing nothing and a complete lack of intensity as a result. Almost felt like cheap imitations of their own previous work. And stupidly easy on top of that. Ughh. Having to move my inventory around for the first time ever in the game for Leon after
getting the rocket launcher before the final phase was just the hilarious icing on this saccharine cake. Made me laugh out loud when his briefcase popped up before the climax. So there I was moving handgun ammo, herbs, scrap bags and grenades around to make room while in the middle of the last freakin boss fight. Such intensity!
Will still do an insanity run at some point without modifiers, just so I can torture myself into having more fun and get my money's worth. I'm sure the non-boss gameplay would be much better with just ridiculously amped up difficulty so I can get through the excessive ammo and health the game relentlessly throws at you. On second thought, may be I'll get rocket launchers just to skip the boss fights altogether as they are totally not worth the effort…
Leon said he "feels better than ever" after his Elpis shot, and both critics and gamers are showering Capcom with praise for making their most OP protagonist in the last 10 years that I've played all their RE games. I really hope they don't get the wrong idea for RE10 and turn him into a wisecracking Superman on a power trip. Infinite ammo and infinite health incoming? *shudders*
End rant.
Sorry guys. I know many love this game and I don't want to sound like a troll. I'm honestly pissed and deliberately hyperbolic to express said pissy-ness. No game has frustrated me this much in a long long time. The order 1886 was the last I can recall that still gives me the ick. At least this was much better. It was still made by competent people with a ton of love for both the characters and the fans. But I'm frustrated nonetheless because of the high expectations I had for it going in after the glowing reception. Sighhhh… I'm clearly in the minority.
End rant for realsies
