Valheim Is 6 Months Timed Xbox Console Exclusive, Will Come To PlayStation Later

Microsoft are doing exactly the same thing as Sony, they both need to stop it. Will that happen, doubt it.

Iā€™m not complaining either way, Iā€™m just laughing because Iā€™ve seen people deny that Microsoft are doing this.

So, What should Microsoft be doing to compete with Sony?
Theyā€™ve bought 15 studios since 2018.

Some of the studios; Playground, Obsidian, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software and Double Fine are amongst the most beloved and acclaimed in the industry.

Included in the purchases were some of the most iconic franchises in the history of the medium; Doom, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

I think that is what they are doing to compete with Sony.

What idiot denies it? Everybody knows that with Stalker 2 one of the most anticipated games this year will be a timed exclusive.

Can I ask you directly, what do you want MS do to make their platform appealing. What do they do to go up against the following large third party exclusive deals with Key publishers?

Deathloop - Bethesda - 1yr
Ghost Wire Tokyo - Bethesda - 1yr
Forspoken - Square - 2 years
Final Fantasy XVI - Square 1/2 years?
Final Fantasy VII Remake - Square - TBD??
Hogwarts Legacy Exclusive Quest - 6 months? / 1 year?
Silent Hill 2 - Konami - Not sure timeframe on this one? 1 year / 2 ?

I may have missed some and I am sure more are coming.

What would you be happy with Microsoft doing?
I remember answering you this very question in another thread.

There have been loads of games on GP day 1 that have had / will have a delayed release on Playstation

This is a quick roll call off the top of my head - Someone with more patience than me can probably produce a definitive list. There are bound to be dozens more :

The Medium
The Ascent
High on Life
Tell me Why
Tunic
The Tourist
Vampire Survivors

[Future]
Stalker 2
Ark 2

How anyone can argue that Microsoft doesn't engage in the same practice as everyone else, I don't know.

They just choose to target the cash at multiple smaller titles, rather than the big flagship releases.

How can you turn that on me? hahaha

I would prefer if these didn't exist, I've literally posted it in this thread.

Microsoft hasn't secured those games as exclusive, Sony has....so we aren't living in that reality.

So, I ask again....what does microsoft do to compete with those exclusivity deals. If you could share your thoughts Topher as well that would be great.

We are in the reality where Microsoft has secured its own exclusives. That's how I can turn the argument around on you. If you are going to say Microsoft is doing this to compete with Sony then Sony is doing it to compete with Microsoft.

The only real hypocrisy i see in this thread is how people are pivoting when it comes to discussing intent and scope.

Not sure how you can Insist scope doesnā€™t matter when youā€™re taking about timed exclusivity, yet insist it matters when talking about acquisitions.

Consistency is key

Very true. Likewise, can't say scope doesn't matter with acquisitions but insist it does with timed exclusivity. It works both ways.

So is this a more appropriate quote to use?

That is another misattributed quote.

In this instance he is talking about content in multi-platform games like the Destiny / Hogwarts / Cod exclusive quests and rewards.

Edit: Euurgh - Just noticed he was replying to TimDog so Phil loses by default

Exactly.

And for the record, I don't mind it. If both companies are doing it, it's fair game. Get all the timed exclusives you want.

My only complaint is that when you're equally as involved in these deals, do not go out and pose as the good and say that "timed exclusivity deals are bad" and "when everyone plays, we all win" and blame the other company for their deals and use that as an excuse to buy multiplatform publishers and make their games permanently exclusive.

It's in early access as well still. Maybe it overlaps where retail v1 hits the shelves and they support with dev etc

With a 5 person team they likely werenā€™t going to have the resources to easily release on both platforms at once either way.

"early acess" is just a fancy word for people to go easy on them when they get tangled in the game's many bugs. Nowadays, early acess is just like a normal launch of a game.
It was released ages ago so of course its more mature than 2021. But early access is used for small teams to identify bugs at scale. Kind of like in the wild beta testing. It's almost like functional acceptance testing

Sure, maybe some devs still use it as it was originally intended, but most devs use it as a way to soft launch their game, so that gamers are more lenient on them, and to have a "second chance/second wind" on sales when the "official" launch happens.

Early acess is supposed to be a means of squashing bugs on masse through the aid of the community, and not to be seen as a gauge of interest nor to use it as a means to gain funds/money, just as a normal launch would right? But nowadays, if a game has a bad early acess launch(meaning that it sold few copies) devs are CANCELLING their games, or just dropping support altogether, breaking that promise that the game would be worked on regardless as early access is just a means to help them develop a game, and fucking over people who bought a buggy and broken game under the guise of later getting the complete package.

Ahh, ok so it is fine for MS to do these deals and there is no issue..you just want to drop the classic Phil Spencer quotes again...Ok, you do you lol see you in the next thread. I'll leave ya to it :)

Game's fun as hell, and shockingly enough I'm still not a fan of 3rd party timed exclusivity. Putting it on Gamepass is more than enough for me, let the PS guys join in on the fun.

Same. Started the game with my son and we've obsessed for few days already. If we are not playing, we are talking about it. Perfectly normal.

Which one you'd say is worse of the following two options?
  • Exclusive weapon skins in Call of Duty in exchange for marketing the game, OR
  • Paying money to a developer so the game does not come out on one console for 6 months?

Yeah this totally won't come back to bite Phil in the ass in the near future.

Why would it? Phil has said in lots of interviews that he doesnā€™t like these types of deals where a game is walled off for a time period but that he has to do them because itā€™s basically how the industry works now. He has also said he despises and will no longer do deals where pieces of a game are timed exclusive, kind of like the old CoD DLC deals and AFAIK MS doesnā€™t do those deals anymore, though Iā€™m sure a warrior or two will chime in and prove me wrong (which is fine).

Plus, itā€™s hard to compare six months of console exclusive access to the preview version of Valheim to a year long complete exclusive access to Final Fantasy whatever number theyā€™re up to, two years of console exclusive Forspoken, however many years itā€™s been console exclusive FF7, lifetime exclusive SFV, etc etc.

That said, exclusive deals suck. Iā€™d rather they just pay to bring games to GamePass and not worry about exclusivity.

On a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being Scummy

  • Exclusive Skins - 1
  • Exclusive XP - 5
  • Exclusive Missions - 8
  • Exclude other Consoles - 10

Precisely.
Anything that market regulators donā€™t flag as anti-competitive is fair game. Itā€™s business.

Nah. In that context, heā€™s talking about paying to keep maps and modes exclusive in multi-platform titles.

Not the same thing.
Come on bud, you know deals like this go against the public kumbaya approach. I donā€™t even care personally, timed exclusives are normally shite anyway. But what the mouth says is different to the actions here.

I agree with you that in the context of that quote he is technically talking about DLC though.

It's successful on Steam because everything with the tags "Open World" Survival" and "Early Access" is successful on Steam.
I don't really see your point? Besides it doesn't really hold up either as when you look at the top 25 (and beyond) Steam's most popular games are incredibly diverse. Out of the first 25 most popular games there's only 3 that fit the mold you described.

I don't really understand why you're comparing multiplayer player counts to late playstation ports. but ok.

All it's proving is that PC gamers love low quality crafting/gridfest games.

Like look at this shit. is this made in Dreams?

GAF when it sees a timeless art style: "it's shit, does it even ray trace bro?!"

My man, free yourself from the mainstream marketing cycle and broaden your horizons. There's more to games than just shiny materials and bespoke mesh culling or whatever the fuck or DLSS 6.0 with VRR on Vulkan at 12K 900fps.

I sound like a broken record but it bears repeating: I truly wonder if I'm on an enthusiast forum made up mostly adults that loves the medium or that GAF is actually a time machine in disguise that warps us back to gamefaqs circa 2005 during the height of the Fanboy Wars. I'm 36 and some of the takes on here are baffling to say the least.

Itā€™s funny how buying developers of 100 people that own zero IPs obviously is the same thing as buying 2500+ publishers with some of the biggest IPs in gaming whereas having a 2 year timed exclusivity vs 6 months of exclusivity is completely different and not even comparable.

I'm playing Vampire Survivors on a 4090.

Pure Gameplay

When I was playing grounded it made me rekindle my love for survival games and this was the only other survival game Iā€™ve been dying to play.

Survival games are legit some of the best games to play with friends.

Oh come on. Are we seriously taking this angle? I thought your first post was a joke one, and that's how I responded.

This "indie" dev will be one of the richest indie studios. Valheim is a huge commercial success.

And no, Microsoft did not help this developer by volunteering bug QA on Xbox. This game has been in "early access" for 2 years. That's just what some games do. Fortnite was in early access for the longest time.

Valheim is a fully playable bug-free game with multiple expansions already released.

Microsoft is not helping a poor dev by providing bug-testing facilities on Xbox. They are paying money to get an extremely popular game on Xbox console and blocking it from coming to PlayStation for at least 6 months.

This is a simple timed-exclusivity money-hat deal. Nothing more; nothing less.

This game is two years old on Steam and has sold 10 million copies. Microsoft isn't funding development. Microsoft is buying exclusivity.

Oh right, I assumed that it was in early access because work was still ongoing, but if it's feature complete and bug free, then I guess it isn't as I thought. TBH, I only recently heard of it.

Why is it in early access then? Surely it'd be more attractive to Xbox players if it was marketed as a finished product.
