This rumor is rubbish of course, but it's just such a bad idea anyway. Don't give the devs even less reason to optimize the code and push the PS5 to its limit.. 🙄

There's not much room to improve the code.

Shitty developers like Ubisoft only achieve in open world games raytracing in 30 fps.

Capable developers like Insomniac achieve raytracing with a dynamic Resolution 1080P-1440p with 60fps.

Insomniac already confirmed that they can only optimize the code a little for raytracing.

That's It. The console is already nearly maxed out.
 
I would expect anywhere between 15 and 20 teraflops. Maybe an increase of the CPU clock to 4.0 ghz. They might go for faster ram but I am unsure if they would add more. The lower end TF number might disappoint many, but I actually think a pro model should be more than just additional power. I would like to see a bigger hard drive and potentially the pro controller included.
If its a 3nm SoC then around 4.0Ghz clock isn't out of the question. PS4 Pro saw around a 32% boost in CPU clocks compared to vanilla PS4 going from 28nm to 16nm.

15 Teraflops only makes sense if they have to stick with something like a 5nm SoC. 18TFlops minimum on 3nm.

Wouldn't it be double of what the PS5 has, if they do the same thing they did with the PS4 Pro? So 21 TFs should be the expectation.

Yes, just being a bit on the conservative side. There are a couple variants of N3 process, some being more efficient than others.

2x the GPU logic is pretty much minimum you'd want for a Pro version of a console. The question is, do they achieve that by doubling the compute units, going crazy with the clock speeds or a combination of both.

Mark Cerny seems to really like the 36 CU layout, but they might have to finally add more CUs for the Pro.

Not totally honest. Unless for some reason you need to keep the older console, you can easily sell it for at least half of what the upgraded console cost. My PS4 Pro and PS5 purchases were only a $100 upgrade for me each time because I was able to sell my OG PS4 for $300 and my PS4 Pro for $400.

So yeah, paying $100 or even $200 every 3 - 4 yrs is not a big deal to get better performance.

You can also sell your PC parts, so the argument doesn't really matter there.

Reminder that AMD struggles with raytracing on their top of the line $1000 GPUs. A resolution bump alone would go a long way for some of these games. Look at Returnal PC Vs PS5.

People understand just many want to be difficult

Reminder that AMD struggles with raytracing on their top of the line $1000 GPUs. A resolution bump alone would go a long way for some of these games. Look at Returnal PC Vs PS5.
Thats why the Pro version has Cerny magic patents, to attack RT differently than off the shelf parts

I know, it's become such an unthinking cliche.

Apparently 30% of us use performance mode, so pretty all of those users are savvy enough for this stuff.

The sales pitch of performance modes + double the resolution + RT should be more than enough. I'd even suggest that a significant proportion of the market for latest tech would be well aware of how pointless 8k is and would actually be put off by such an offering.

I wasnt convinced by this naysayer video. He sets up a false equivalency by saying the Pro is coming 3 years later (it did come 3 years later for the PS4 but would be coming 4 years later for the PS5 - a big difference!), and then dwells entirely on 8K being irrelevant (it is) but doesnt mention that a Pro would take games from 30 fps - 60 fps. He also says it would be hard for devs to target a new sku, and doesnt mention that a great many games of today already have performance/fidelity modes baked in.

I think he's wrong and a Pro is coming around Nov 2024, but time will tell.

I assume they will double the CUs to 72 like they did on ps4 pro. If that’s the case you would get over double the current flops on the gpu side. Probably a small bump on the cpu.

If it were some random person on the internet then yeah it wouldn't be worth giving it a second glance. Tom Henderson does have a track record with insider knowledge, and specifically PlayStation hardware. His rumors are at least worth keeping an eye on. For example, no one else leaked the existence of a PlayStation "Pro" controller but Tom, then 2 months later Sony announced the DualSense Edge with the same feature set Tom described.

If you want to wait and see how reliable his sources are, then we'll find out in about 6 weeks when Sony does their fiscal year report and gives us their projections for the next FY. Tom's claimed they're going to be aiming for 30.5 million units, which is way way WAAAAY higher than anything Sony's ever done before. If the number they give is anywhere in the ballpark of what his rumor is, that's a further sign that his sources are legit.

Considering even a 20tflop rdna 3 gpu is behind most of the equivliant nvidia 3xxx series its not looking good if they slap a rdna3 gpu in and expect it to make magic happen.

Dude, I sell my graphics cards ever couple of years for almost msrp it's allowed me to upgrade to the better card generation over generation.

Dual 570s sli....to a 970..sold to upgrade to a 1080...sold the 1080 for 400 quid....paid extra and got a 2080....sold the 2080 for 450....spent a bit extra bought a 3080 day one for 719....sold it two years later for more than what I bought it for thanks to the gpu boom....chipped in and bought a 4090...imagine what I can sell that for in two years...I'll probs get like 1100 to 1200 for it if I time it right...pay an extra 400 to 500 and get a 5090.

That's just the gpus, full pcs with cpus and ram I've sold for hundreds upon hundreds of pounds.

PC are better than console becuase due to the custom aspect you can get more back for your investment and cpus being so beast they last years upon years....an 8700k with an overclock will smash the shit out of a ps5 / xbox with a decent gpu. I sold my last PC that lasted me since the 8700k launched for like a grand.

it seems to me with your hand waving a lot of the “a bit extra here… paid extra there” that you spent far more than someone that went PS4 to PS5 digital or Xbox One S to XSX even… but all right ;).

Oh of course I will have spent some investment, but the benefits of PC are ginormous for me. The open platform, the investment etc. Its like owning a sports car...the investment doesn't stop when you buy it and it's more expensive. The consoles are like owning a decent gti car.

Proper invested PC = high end sports car = no road tax cheaper to fill up some how.
Console = volkswagen golf gti. With 50 pound a year road tax and more expensive petrol.

Doesn't really add up that metaphore but both are still great fun.

Just sell it privately, or wait for 1 pound selling fees on ebay for parts.

It is if your on Lcd. Ive got a plasma which easily reveals the shit DLSS artifacts which DF pretends doesnt exist or isnt noticable. Shits noticable enough for me to be only 4k native or go home. Ya need brute force for that. But for most sitiuations your probably spot on.

A generational leap would make it a PS6, not going to happen in late 2024....

I think a PS5 Pro will sell even less than PS4 Pro if they do release it.

It's going to be very hard to market it this time: the 4K TV rush is over now...

In saying that, PC is not the end all, be all. I have a 7900xt PC and am going through Uncharted on it, and there’s a bug where hair and clothes are literally flying all over the place. It won’t go away and its really distracting. Forums have no known fix.

Then there is Witcher 3 in dx12 that is just a crash fest… ugh.

On console, the games just fucking work. So, while PC is objectively more powerful, the games on them can be buggy and break the experience, or not allow you to have an experience at all. Simply because of a driver or the game itself. PCs aren’t as brilliant as everyone makes them out to be- they have issues.

I would far from say games just work on console. A lot of games launch with dodgy issues and performance problems. Look at resi 4 hair and vaseline issues, rayteacing tanking performance. Dodgy control issues. Games have strange issues on all platforms now.

Dead space vrs problems on ps5

Hopefully your issue on uncharted gets patched. No excuse for that.

Why would a refresh need to have a generational leap in a graphic feature?

So you think people will go from paying $499 for a PS5 in 2023 to feeling like a more powerful PS5 isn't worth $499 - $599 in 2024 because the games don't look like they come from PS6?

With RDNA 2's RT, I think 6600 XT would be more accurate than 5700 XT, its around that spec, PS5's GPU's architecture is close to RDNA 2, with around 10Tflops, so either 5700 XT or 6600 XT, however, games on console is much more optimized, in practice it might perform better than PC for the same spec, thus giving people a sense of better than it actually was, I guess that's where the 6800 assumption came from
mythical console optimisation only happens with some first party exclusives or if u compare late pc ports to console versions of those exclusives, for multiplats 6700x vastly outperforms both consoles in every aspect/game

The 72 CU was the give away for me. I don't think Sony would go for so much silicon, especially when you consider thermals, power consumption and yields.

indeed u got plenty talented top tier devs who already made/launched games on ps5, not gonna name names but we all know them, and no game runs 4k60, from the lookers, not to mention addion rt on top.
There is a reason new ratchet, to get rt and 60fps had to run in 1080p or only bit above that, or their fidelity mode running in 40fps.
