PS5 Finally Copies Popular Xbox Series X Feature

All Sony consoles do, at least from PS3 up. Virtualization is a form of security.
I said it badly, but I meant that the game, engine and so on isn't virtualized/conteiner (aised) the way Xbox is doing it. Virtualization comes in handy when you want to kill it fast, but that could be with something called handler, which allows to transport game loop into memory. It is really complicated and boring, but both companies are doing it differently, which does not enables them to use the same solution. That's better language.

Not understanding this wording.

If I buy a Digital copy I can play it anyway without a disc.

1. Are they saying if I buy a disc game and install it I can play it without the disc inserted? (Would make sense)

2. If I own a digital copy and a disc copy of the same game I no longer need the disc. (Would not make sense)
You don't need to download your digital version, you can use disc install to play, without a disc obviously

So.....if you have the game installed via disc and buy the digital version you can play it without the disc....
I'm assuming this doesn't separate them anymore because other then that, then thats how it worked before.
It just pops up asking which version you want to play and that sticks on your home screen by default until it falls off again then it'll ask you again.

What about xbox copying ps5 feature - GAMES
/ded

yeah, that's a cool feature I guess? What's the point of it really ?
"...it was a bit annoying having to redownload everything on a slower connection."

"...you can use the same disc installation to play the digital copy without inserting the disc."

In other words, Xbox has had this basic feature for quite a while, because it’s just common sense. Whereas, it took Sony years to do it.

Quick resume isn’t reliable enough for me. So many times I try to resume and it crashes. Just ended up turning it off
I've had 0 issues with it but I play mostly single player games, I've heard it's absolute ass with multiplayer or sign in type games.

All I play is single player. I'm not suggesting it is a common occurrence. Just issues I'm experiencing.

Its the number 2.

For example. Before this update, lets say u had bought Demons Souls on Disk and had it installed on your PS5. Now Demons Souls is also available on PS+ Extra and you wanted to play that version to not bother inserting a disk. You had to uninstall the physical version and download the digital version to play the digital version.
After the new update you no longer need to unistall one version and install the other. Even if you have the physical version installed, as long u have access to a digital version of the same game you can just launch the game without the need of the physical disk.

Its a nice quality of life update that not many ppl are aware, much less being something popular.

Thanks for the explanation. I kept wondering why I'd buy a digital and physical copy of a game. It was the PS+ part throwing me off.

Can't they copy the update all games like in Series X? much nicer then going game by game like on PS5.
If you have the auto update thing turn on in the settings, the games will auto update as soon as thers an update available. I never had to manually request one of my games to update.

As Wario64 relays over on Twitter, the recent PS5 update quietly added new functionality involving game discs. More specifically, with the update installed, if a PS5 user buys a digital version of a game already installed via disc, you can use the same disc installation to play the digital copy without inserting the disc. This also applies to games downloaded via PlayStation Plus that meet this criteria. This may seem like a tiny quality-of-life feature, and it is, but it's one PlayStation fans have been asking for and are happy to see finally added.

"That's a huge quality-of-life change that I loved on Xbox," writes one PlayStation fan of the change. "Very glad to see it make the jump as the few times I ran into the issue, it was a bit annoying having to redownload everything on a slower connection."

"Wow that's an awesome change they kept quiet," adds another PlayStation fan. "Most of the big changes didn't really apply to me, so wasn't so interested. This was a big bother in the PS4 era for sure."
'quality of life'? seriously? i mean, we're not talking pre-butchered meat or indoor plumbing here...

What you are talking about is a hypervisor layer that seats between the hardware and operating system. A general diagram of how that looks like in the Xbox case, there is the Hypervisor and 2 guest OSes, Xbox Game OS and the Windows OS that runs regular applications. I'm not sure how that plays a part in making quick resume possible. Quick Resume is just save state where the contents of the RAM is dumped into SSD, it is a snapshot of all memory addresses currently in use by the game and saving it in storage and recalling it back to exactly where it was. An interesting thing to note is that PSP Go has that feature and it was called Game Pause. On Sony consoles, there is a hypervisor seating between the hardware and the OS, i'm not sure exactly how that works but all access to the hardware by games goes through a translation layer handled by the hypervisor. Could Sony implement quick resume? I think they can but it just depends on where they want to focus resources in terms of console features. They went through the hassle of creating the activity cards feature which can take you right back into a game in under 8 seconds, but most games are not using it.

But if the disc works, why would you download the digital version? If you didn't want the disc you wouldn't have brought it and would have went digital in the first place.

It already worked in that way in PS4 many years ago. I played like 800 hours of Street Fighter V, and to avoid swapping discs frequently to alternate it with other disc games I kept buying, I bought it digitally.

I continued with the same savedata etc and didn't have to use the disc to play SFV.

It has changed, I had the likes of Demons Souls on disc installed, when they moved to PS Plus I was still asked for the disc even though the game was in my subscription, I had to delete and redownload a few games to use the PS Plus version.
I've noticed now with Forbidden West the PS Plus version just works off my disc install now.
So this is welcome news.
They can do more though, I've just got Ragnorak digitally and bizarrely it doesn't give me the PS4 download, they should give both versions to all digital owners, especially on first party games.

You used the same save data but you didn't use disc install, you downloaded digital version of the game to play the game without disc. That's the main point - you can install game from disc and play it like digital version, if you bought or obtained it through PSPlus digitally.

It was many years ago but as I remember I didn't downloaded it again. I had the disc version installed, later bought the digital version and continued playing the game but without needing to insert the disc or without needing to do anything.

In any case, Street Fighter V is a very rare case. Because it was a GaaS updated very frequently every few weeks or months, and for some weird reason every time the game got a major update (maybe twice per year) the game update included the whole game, so basically it was downloaded again.

"Huge quality of life change"?
Really? How many times do people buy digital versions of games they already own and previously installed on disc?

I saw the title and thought Sony had implemented snapshot saves for multiple games.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's designed to not de-sync if it's an online-based game. In the same way your PC won't be connected when it's not turned on. Not sure there's a way to not have happen what you're describing, just due to the nature of the beast. On the other hand, due to the SSD, load times are basically non-existent on Series X/ PS5, so not sure it's even that great of a feature to begin with. Agreed that Quick Resume is great for single-player, because you don't need to go back into your file from the main menu on the front-end of the game.

Actually, it's basically the way the Switch works. My whole playthrough of BotW was just resuming the game from Standby mode. I never had to relaunch the game, like ever, for my 100+ hour run. It was just hit the power button, the system pops back on, click the game, boom you're back playing. Like literally 2-3 seconds. I have to say, that was really amazing. Especially coming off of the Wii U, which had terrible loading times, even going in and out of system-level menus.

I dunno, you'd be surprised. For real.

So you can continue playing ALREADY INSTALLED game without the disc ?
I think I am starting to get it. christ. How was that now wotking like that previously, The disc and download game was always the same anyway
They weren't the same in the eyes of PlayStation OS. You could end up getting a game on PSplus and still had to use the disc. What's more, save files didn't work on those versions. I don't know if this fixes it, but if you played a game let's save in the USA digitally and someone from the UK sends you his disc, your save files wouldn't work. I had this problem on ps4 and ps5. I hope they fixed it.

You definitely had to download it again. The PS4 always viewed the disc version and digital version of the same game as two different SKUs, you couldn't use the data from one with the license from the other. Now you can.

How many times does a full disc game end up on PSPlus/PSPlus Extra?
How many times users let their PS+ lapse and then want to use the DISC version of the game they had previously on PS+?

Yes, it's a BIG deal for some of us. Stop being a jerk

That's all?

I thought that having the physical version, they would give you access to the digital version.

I absolutely detest this part of the article, obligatory quotes from ransoms on the Internet. Other blog started doing this as well, and it is a clear copy of how Korean entertainment blogs reported the views of ‘netizens’ 10 years ago.
