Final Fantasy XVI Previews are Dropping

Gilgamesh Fan Annoyance
FFXIV by definition for 90% of it's instanced content is party based. Kind of a idiot thing to say.

A majority of FF games have controllable parties that you manage in fights. OG FF was more of a strategy game back then instead of a Spectacle Fighter RPG that it is now.

Those clamoring for the old world FF games will have to look to Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest for that fix.

Since Type 0 they have been moving towards Action RPG style and it's here to stay.

I will play this day one . Been that way since it was first announced.

That said what I’ve seen looks very mid. The combat damn near looked auto pilot, the quick time events in combat somehow feel whack compared to say a Yakuza game, and the fact this demo level was all linear doesn’t bode well.

Would I prefer a shit open world of FF15 or a good looking corridor game like FF13? FF13 all day.

I don’t see this being the epic slam dunk SE is hoping it will be, but it will likely be a good game akin to quality we got with 13&15.

Final Fantasy is polarizing. I would rather play FF15 multiple times over before playing FF13 again. FF12 had the perfect balance of real time and turn based. I thought FF9 was horrible.

Let go of archaic turn based mechanics. These only existed because current tech didn't allow to make it more real time.
We can do it better, why not do it?

Look at mass effect 2 compared to 1? It does not have to be a bad thing
Turn based games are nothing to do with hardware. Are you serious?
It's just a different genre. If someone wants to play action combat there's alot of games out there. Nobody wants to play FF as DMC clone or dark souls wannabe. At least be creative and make gameplay like FF7 remake.

What was special about the FF7 Remake gameplay? For me it looked cool but played like a janky action slasher, never understood what they were trying to do there. Hopefully the new combat is better but if it isn’t I’ll still play it because it’s a new mainline FF, it’ll be a spectacular ride no matter what.
Sadly turn based combat seems to be buried for FF.

It's not the best but still the gameplay is unique and not the clone of another game. You should try again with hard mode if you haven't, it changes the game completely.

It's ok to enjoy action combat, I also enjoy it on other games such as Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma.
At the same time, it would be a fallacy to state that it's an "evolution" of combat.
Would Chess "evolve" if it became "real time"? It's an entirely different type of game.
Not better, not worse -- different.
It's clear they changed to profit more, not because of that being the "natural progression of things".

Yeah I read that a couple of years ago. That's why I said I'm not too optimistic about it.
I still have hope Yuji Horii will try to keep the series intact, but we'll see.

RPG combat usually emphasizes character skill rather than player skill.
The more a game emphasizes player skill, the more action-oriented it becomes (i.e. Action-RPG)

The Witcher is more action-oriented.
Vagrant Story allows free movement but the game "pauses" every time an action is performed. The action doesn't happen in "real time" like in The Witcher, so the strategy part is more emphasized than pure reflex. FF12 kinda resembles it regarding the free movement, but with a more traditional ATB system. I would be fine if a new FF used the FF12 combat system.

The problem is making FF reflex-based, with dodging and all that. That's just silly.
I think you had to use reflexes for the guard part of vagrant but i could remember wrong.

Not feeling like FF, not enough party members, not enough of enough, why not this or that, FF15 was the best and why they didn't iterate on that.....FF15 was SHIIET, not the shit but just shit. The game that after the first Gas Station made me infuriated and i had to drop it because of how boring it was. Thanks God they changed the game and now it's looking like something you can play.
The human Clive gameplay is awesome (DMC style) and the Beast Clive is not the best he moves like a piece of wood, the movement is not fluid. About the 11 hours of cinematics BRING IT ON, i loved good cut scenes. I can watch Blizzard cut scenes all day and still want more, if they are at the same level or near there then it would be glorious.

And fuck the Xbox fan crybabies crying for a game, go buy a PlayStation ( like i will buy Xbox to play Starfield)

Good game and ff15 in the same sentence gave me cancer.

If this one has the same quality of these 2, we are royally fucked.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Newsflash: FF 14, 15 and 16 and a few others before are not party based.

technically even FFXIII isn’t really party based, you just control one character during battle and the rest are AI (although you can switch around).

Iirc that’s unlocked after finishing the game. Haven’t played through it yet and I doubt I’ll do that only to play it again since I don’t really like the gameplay. I do enjoy the visuals though, and the nostalgia from the music and settings, I plan to go through it completely before Rebirth but no replaying planned.

FFXV had real time combat and a single playable character (at launch, they updated it MUCH later to make the others playable)
FFXIV is an MMO were you control a single character
FFXIII had multiple playable characters but they only let you control one at a time (and assign roles to the others).....also the first half of that game is literally pressing X to win.

The last time a new mainline entry launched with something resembling a proper fully controllable party was XII, in 2006 (17 years ago). And funnily enough the entire gambit system revolved around optimizing the AI so it can fight without your direct input..

The last time a new mainline entry launched with a traditional party based turn based combat system that many people here say is "the true FF" was FFX ...22 years ago

Ahh! Its a waste. I agree that the normal mode is very boring and they should have let the player choose to play hard mode at the beginning without NG+. It's a total game changer. Oh well, just want to advice that you should try hard mode, if you feel like it.

I dunno, the whole point of the final fantasy series to me was that they switch it up drastically between titles. So I don’t get the hate — looks like a cool game with an interesting world
They didn't switch up drastically until after 13-2 and definitely didn't change genres for the mainline games that weren't MMOs. They built on what they had. XII was really the only oddball. They made it so you didn't even have to play the game with the gambit system. XIII was just a development mess but retained a fairly traditional battle system for the series. Outside of the MMO games or Tactics the genre changing differences didn't appear until 15. The settings/world all changed between games but the genre never did until recently. The failure of making a good FF has somehow been conflated with people hate the battle system so it must change. Lets face it FFXIII and XV were fucking garbage regardless of battle systems. This narrative of change you are spouting is as false as can be as it is only a recent thing and a direct result of SE's own incompetence.

I haven’t played the later final fantasies, only the ones from back in the day 7,8,9,10, 11 - each one had different characters and world, they changed the combat and gameplay each time - 11 was an mmo they all had turn based but didn’t they change the system every game

EDIT: FYI I was never a huge final fantasy guy (due to the turn based stuff) so I could be mischaracterizing it - but to me it always seemed like they switched it up between each game

Can only speak for myself, but i'm not a fan. Never played FF in my life, but after all that praise it gets i was thinking about trying this one. But after reading >11 hours of cinematics i ran faster than Count von Count when he counts Meg's nipples.

The battle systems changed slightly and new things were added up to a point and then they started taking things away and making the systems more restrictive. 1-6 had 4+ party members you could input commands for, VII on had that down to 3 or less that you could input commands for. VII had limit breaks, VIII had the draw system, IX had trance etc. After X-2 which to me was the peak of this battle system they started putting you in less and less control of your party. XII had gambits that you could automate, XIII had you only control one character and put the others in your party into whatever they called them to automate them. They were still turn based vs real time in the two latest entries plus whatever you want to classify Lightning Returns as. Again excluding anything that was an MMO or tactics game. The newest entries are a complete genre change vs tweaking battle systems. IMO the reason people started to hate the battle systems of the games are twofold. One they were always too easy and the strategy element was thrown out the window because of game difficulty. Two they started to limit your control or try to automate too much which doesn't translate into anything fun.

If in 20 years you still haven’t come to terms with the fact that changing the combat system and setting of the world in each new Final Fantasy is a staple of the franchise, then the problem is you.

When you sit there behind your keyboard and bitch about what you think the combat system needs to be, or whether True Final Fantasy is either future fantasy or medieval fantasy, you just come off like a fool.

It’s embarrassing.

I have found every FF game to be a good game in the mainline series. Personal opinion can make them go to great but none of them ever felt to me like a bad game or a waste of time to complete.

This so far doesn’t look like a great FF game, but a good one. The story could be it’s trump card to push it over that edge .

I’m also of the mind if this game has a hard difficulty option from the jump I will do it because this showcase looked brain dead easy otherwise.
