Does the story / characters / location matter to you with Resident Evil games?

As a rule of thumb to myself, I don't normally make rant threads anymore. So I'm gonna try to sum up why I don't like the new games as much...

The story used to be about Umbrella making the viruses, and since RE4, I think Capcom hasn't really took the story very far yet with their utter nonsense. Then they conjured up their 'Blue Umbrella' idea which I'll admit, initially sounded kind of interesting, and I've since gathered that Capcom are seemingly just content to throw in nostalgic references.

Some stuff feels fresh, although quite silly by today's standards, like with the tall vampire aristocrat, the doll maker, and the magnetic guy. But I think most of the time they make up things that's a real head scratcher in general. For example, RE8 does not feel like a sequel, to any game besides of course RE7. But then there's one note near the end just to explain that there's a link to the rest of the series. Huh? :(

I feel like RE 0, 1, 2, 3, CV and even a few of the spin offs are like a 'natural' continuation of what came before. I'd say 4, 5 and 6 are just their own thing, although 5 certainly feels more like RE than 4, as 4 is more like a side quest for Leon, and 5 concerns Wesker resuming his feud with Chris from RE1, and CV, and then Jill returns and it all comes together. Even all the other side story games and the animated movies just have different things going on, that it could be ignored and nobody would really notice. The same with the comics. Because I really don't know why they felt as if people would prefer looking at manga books to actually playing a game.

But why is Capcom keeping RE4 faithful, and not RE2 and 3 as well? I don't understand that, because RE2 and 3 should have been RE1 type remakes, and yet 4 so far feels mostly the same. And I think that says it all. They want to play it safely with RE4, as it's essentially supposed to be viewed as being the apex of the whole franchise in a sense, but they didn't mind ruining 2 and 3 which are the 'real' RE games. And 2 was pretty butchered, quite frankly. It doesn't remind me of the original RE2 whatsoever, besides having the same police station along with the same main characters, that don't even quite look right. But even then, much of it feels watered down.

They actually did a rail shooter based on RE2, that came out back in 2009. It's The Darkside Chronicles. And while it was not completely faithful, it was more like how RE2 should have been, than the 2019 reimagining where they decided to cut out a lot of enemy types and repeated things, such as both characters fighting William Birkin's G form, instead of doing it properly with Mr. X being the other tyrant type thing that goes following the other person, and then ending things on the train leaving the lab by having you fight him, then blow up Birkin as you run out of the tunnel. Mr. X AKA Super Tyrant just decides to stalk everyone. But overall, with all the times Capcom has gone back to Raccoon City after blowing it up, I have to ask. Why bother?

I don't want to give up on the series. But let's be honest. How long can they keep this up? Now we've had vampires and werewolves. What next? Witches and goblins. Miranda is like a witch anyway, so allow me to correct myself. I honestly struggle now to say that RE games today are even meant to be RE games. At least, they are not like the old classic ones. But 1998? Oh, man.

I believe that they've become stuck in that time period, because they're always milking the legacy of the franchise by repeatedly returning to the fall of 1998. And yeah. That's the golden age of survival horror games, so it makes sense. But with all their money, I just feel as if it could go to developing more non remake games for once, that will move things ahead. Maybe they could consider doing a Resident Evil: Revelations 3 about a character who has been absent for years, such as Ada Wong. After all, they left RE6 off with her going to her next big mission, which was never concluded, just like around 5,987,065 other random things they threw into the whole series. They'll continue to add more plot threads in the future, and it's pretty much why I cannot take Capcom seriously now. :D

So what's your take on all of this? Have you gave up caring about the jumbled up plot, etc? Or do you just play the games to play them, and not worry about any of this crap I'm referring to? :p

P.S. If you feel as if I take the games too seriously nonetheless, I guess I do. Shoot me. End it all! ;)

The attraction of Resident Evil is more scenario, progression of gameplay/power fantasy and characters for me. Even if the main character is shit subpar, like RE8, then I can enjoy it if NPCs are well done, on top of an exciting/engaging scenario.

The story is of minimal concern to me in most games.

The story has been absolute shit in RE since CV entered the scene.

RE5 did a good job of tying up loose ends but then RE6 came in and just shit all over it by introducing neo-umbrella and "the family".

I personally don't care whatsoever for the story in RE, just the gameplay. The OG trilogy is flawless and we'll never get back there cause the series jumped the shark decades ago. I actually wish Capcom would pull the trigger and kill off the bulk of the legacy characters. Truly awful writers over there working on the RE games, bizarre how bad it is.

Go back to the roots and start with the original RE but with a much more serious and grounded tone, and go from there. Forget the giant alligators and tyrant monsters, that shit is silly. Give me an honest-to-goodness survival horror game with interesting lore. Retcon the whole ordeal and give us the mature and terrifying story.

The writing in RE8 is especially pitiful. I know people say that it hardly matters because it is a B grade horror series. But I disagree. It kind of should matter.

Chris lured Ethan and Mia to Europe to start a new slate, and gives them training in order to cope. Then he kills "Mia" and then lies and takes away their daughter, and hides info about Miranda taken Mia out of sight, and just basically refuses to answer to Ethan when confronted later on, until they meet again by the tank. It makes no sense. He could have explained all of this dumb stuff immediately, yet truthfully. Like this dude said on YouTube, they did it to basically keep you the player feeling invested in what was a very poor story.



They just messed up Chris big time. I hate that he is a stupid side character nowadays. He is really only showing up in new RE games now to sell them, because he has been the main [male] hero of the entire series. So that is their objective...

VIIlage had a lot of potential but they wasted it tbf, i could make a better plot with less plotholes.

I always try to identify RE with zombies, Hunters, dogs, crows, Lickers, herbs, STARS, and Nemesis. Not cultists, living puppets, Transformers, pirate midgets, and vampiric bitches that look like something straight out of The Last Man on Earth.

LOL. It all just got to be pretty stupid for me...

I was very into the story and lore of RE up until 5. I thought it was cheesy dumb fun, kinda like a b-horror soap opera, and I was invested in all characters and their relationship with each others. Then Capcom ruined pretty much everything with RE6, where everything just took itself super serious with Uncharted bombastic set pieces and God knows what.

RE7 bounced back with some solid storytelling, and I appreciated the game at first, calling it a return to form. But RE8 was such a crappy sequel that ruined pretty much any excitement I had for Ethan Winters storyline, to the point I feel he and Mia and everything that relates to them is a giant mistake and shouldn't be considered canon in RE lore. The story in RE8 is downright awful, nonsensical mumbojumbo.

Bring back the legacy characters again. Or create new ones. Or reboot the whole fucking thing. But as far as Ethan Winters go, I'm done. I will always be a Resident Evil fan, but Capcom needs to overhaul this entire franchise when they are done remaking all entries.

Not really. It's dumb and convoluted and other than RE4 and RE6, which were just funny, they all suck and most characters are charisma vacuums.

Besides, it's always the same dumbass crap about a new kind of virus made by incomprehensibly stupid evil people, and a recurring cast of same old heroes trying to stop them. Basically just an excuse to set the stage for baller-ass game that's awesome to play.
 
It mattered to me when I was younger, now I treat them much like the Fast and Furious movies. The stories are fun, even if they don't make the most sense. I like to see the continuation of the story, but I also know that a lot of beats from the previous stories are going to be abandoned with the next game. Just gotta have fun with them because this shit ain't ever getting cleaned up.
 
Yeah. I've spent many a year dwelling on it. There are better games to play now anyway, so bitching about it today I reckon is pointless. :D

The Last of Us tops all. ;)

I definitely prefer the more grounded tone of 1-3 and Outbreak in particular. Everything outside of that is too far into sci-fi anime melodrama for me. Once everybody has super-powers I just don't care. I prefer real people dealing with zombies and some reasonably fantastical creatures but stuff like Marcus, Wesker, etc. is just silly to me. RE6 for all its problems tried to bring the characters a bit more in line with what they should be aside from Chris, and somehow managed to make a super powered Sherry and Wesker's son not extremely retarded, but it just wasn't enough to offset how horrible the overall plot was.

RE tried this with the first few games, but it quickly became apparent that there was no overarching plan, but that they were tacking new parts on to each new game with only a haphazard attempt at plausibility or continuity. Only a fool would try to make sense of it all. Not many gamers are fools, think of all the people who think Zelda has a timeline!

Edit: The metastory is nonsense, but that doesn’t mean that an individual game can’t have a good story. I don’t remember any thing about four’s story, but the narrative definitely added to the enjoyment if the gameplay.

I'm honestly there for the gameplay and I don't care much about the lore or characters, but I do love Leon and Jill. The gameplay is always impeccable. The jump from RE6 to 7 in quality was incredible. 2-3-4-7-8 are damn solid for what they are. But like I said, I am there for the gameplay and getting chased by a giant mutant baby in a haunted house, in dark corridors is peak horror and awesomeness.

And RE4 is a legit contender for Best Game Ever but Elden Ring showed up....But hey....RE4 gets a new try soon.

Probably my favorite Capcom franchise. It's just quality all around.

I have all of the Gamecube REs, and while there is unfortunately no RE 1996 in that collection, that to me is the canon RE. Everything 5 and after, regardless of the game quality or lacking of, just isn't RE anymore to me. RE should have ended a long time ago with a fully realized Resident Evil 3.5 that explored Leon's quest to raid Spencer's castle and so on. On one hand, I do love the RE4 we got but on another the series deserves a dignified ending to conclude it on a note that respected the series legacy like 3.5 would have presumably done.

I take the series for what it is. I’ve enjoyed watching them get older. Leon isn’t a rookie in 4 or 6. He’s still a rookie cop in 2. Claire grew similarly and so did Chris. Chris playing a more advanced role in 7/8. When I played the original RE I was like 11 or 12. The game was about a spooky mansion and uncovering its secrets. I thought having Umbrella as this unseeable evil behind it all as being interesting. I didn’t compare the games because they all flowed together over time. I’m also a person who enjoys the cast of RE and the scenarios they’re put it over any major criticisms. You could write a novel of its inconsistencies and I’d still love the series the same way.

There’s a big timeline dating back to the 1700’s events in the RE universe. That stuff is cool to look at it, but I only absorb the pieces that make me happy.

No offence but starting to get sick of this type of criticism, if you want play the EXACT same game then play original RE4, its literally available EVERYWHERE.

This not remaster or upgrade of RE4, its Remake so expect change and again original game still exist.

It's dumb shit and I love it.

RE scenarios seem to be designed around wanting to recreate some cool scary idea or setting from a particularly striking horror movie, then coming up with a series of scientific/biological justifications to explain it, and it doesn't matter how much it affects sequel logic or player expectations based on the previous title. With a few exceptions, every RE title is free to do what it wants with a clean slate, continuity be damned. Sometimes it works better than others, but you have to go in open-minded. If you want to connect the dots to establish the what, why, where and how between games, you can, because the writers put in a surprising amount of effort so as to not contradict anything, but by god you'll have a headache doing it.

With that said, yeah RE is one of the few series where I really do care about the setting, story, locations and characters. The gameplay, design and commitment to polish is dynamite, industry-leading stuff. But there are many series I can say that about which do nothing for me in the narrative stakes. RE is the entire package, and that's why it's my favourite series.

I guess it has something to to with todays market environment. Remaking a game like RE2 obviously costs a lot of money. Money you need to make back by selling the game. Fixed camera angles simply won't sell the amount of copies Capcom needed to sell in order to make a profit. I love the original Resident Evil games and their fixed camera angles, but I also understand that there wouldn't be a RE2 remake in its current form if they didn't change the camera to a thirt person view. RE4 is basically more or less the same because it "invented" the over the shoulder third person view that many games nowadays still use. You don't have to change things that are still accepted by the consumers.

I'm with you. I really dislike RE8. It feels like they didn't know what they should do with the franchise. Witches and Werewolves and shit were just dumb. Am I supposed to be scared about fucking lame ass werewolves now, or big titty vamire ladies? I'm not. They should scale back the nonsense. As for the story, I'm not really a purist that needs the umbrella story to continue in any shape or form. They can start something new. Just (as I said) make it a little more "mature" and don't abandon the horror completely in your survival horror franchise.

It all matters to me but I learned to also change my expectations on certain things and just have fun. I realized that its a Corpo with a successful IP that had a hit on their hands and were working the staff like dogs to get more content out. Its honestly amazing the devs managed to do what they did in such a small amount of time for such little money. People now think they have it bad? Pfft. When I was younger and super into the OG stories I wanted a more grounded and realistic story and experience but I learned to enjoy each game for what they are. Its funny looking at the Capcom design ethos especially back then on fun game design, normally action orientated, its something I respect them for sticking to. RE and Dino Crisis for that matter are entry level horror-lite games. I'm glad they fill that niche. Some want more terror but I don't think RE has even been about that, and I'd wager most of the consumer base doesn't either. They've managed to thread that line between exploration, downtime, puzzles and action quite well, along with now legendary gaming icons.

If they keep releasing games with a pretty protagonist(I love when we get multiple), decent gunplay and exploration and a few puzzles I'll be happy. I also love how they had more advanced storytelling one doesn't see too often, especially in the OG, 2 and 3. 2 Still blows me away with all the content on offer. Back in the day I was disappointed by 3 after 2 since it was so barebones. I'll never forget getting Code Veronica and being wowed by the CG cutscenes that were badass and the more expanded classic gameplay. Sure the acting and story were questionable(tastes and all) but I loved it.

Off topic but I always say to my mate I'd love an open world resident evil featuring the whole of Racoon city. Open world zombie fighting with more focused levels when you enter the mansion or school. Would be geat.

Even better with Alice super powers but that ain't gonna happen 😭

I think for me it’s a combination of the mystery of the story and the location. Resident Evil 1 will always be my favourite of the series just because of the mystery and the decay of the mansion etc. I know there’s already been a remake of the first game but I’d love to have seen it re-remade in the vein of the other remakes. And just properly lean in to almost PT-esque levels of dark, barely lit and opulently decorated but dilapidated nooks and crannies of the mansion. I suppose we kinda got that with the castle in Village but I think the mystery of the setting of the first game appeals to me much more.

Resident Evil is my favourite franchise and RE4 remake my most hyped game of the year. Recently I replayed RE2 y 3 remake, VII and now I'm replaying Village. The thing is, even if I prefer Umbrella and zombies, what it makes fun and fresh and allows me to replay them, is that they are different and with real different ambient, mood and even gameplay. More or less like Final Fantasy games do.

I don't like industrial locations, warehouses, caves, sewers, mines, etc, in my horror games. I like hospitals, schools, regular houses and the original RE mansion.

Every RE game tends to have a combination of all these so it's about the ratio for me.

Video games are a different medium to film and literature.

Look at where gaming started in the 70s and 80s. The colourful crazy sprites of the arcades and the waves of bedroom coders created quirky, uncategorisable games. Games that didn't fit 'genres', games that sprung from the imagination often of a single individual, not to satisfy demographics and focus groups.

In the goofy, silly moments of Resident Evil I see flashes of that spirit. We already have film and literature, let's not aspire for gaming to homogenise and become that.

I've enjoyed every RE game I've played, some more than others. There's a lot of repeated criticisms about RE - RE4 ruined the franchise, they need to go back to their roots, tanks controls/fixed camera are great/suck, etc. - but I'm in it for the characters, OTT stories, atmosphere, and to have a fun time. As well, I like that gameplay is rarely stagnant between games - some stuff works better than others, but it keeps things interesting for me.

I don't want to give up on the series. But let's be honest. How long can they keep this up? Now we've had vampires and werewolves. What next? Witches and goblins. Miranda is like a witch anyway, so allow me to correct myself. I honestly struggle now to say that RE games today are even meant to be RE games. At least, they are not like the old classic ones. But 1998? Oh, man.

I believe that they've become stuck in that time period, because they're always milking the legacy of the franchise by repeatedly returning to the fall of 1998. And yeah. That's the golden age of survival horror games, so it makes sense. But with all their money, I just feel as if it could go to developing more non remake games for once, that will move things ahead. Maybe they could consider doing a Resident Evil: Revelations 3 about a character who has been absent for years, such as Ada Wong. After all, they left RE6 off with her going to her next big mission, which was never concluded, just like around 5,987,065 other random things they threw into the whole series. They'll continue to add more plot threads in the future, and it's pretty much why I cannot take Capcom seriously now. :D

So what's your take on all of this? Have you gave up caring about the jumbled up plot, etc? Or do you just play the games to play them, and not worry about any of this crap I'm referring to? :p

P.S. If you feel as if I take the games too seriously nonetheless, I guess I do. Shoot me. End it all! ;)

To be honest after so many years the devs themselves do not fucking know what happened, how and when. Who can keep all that fn lore in your head? 😇
So let's just throw this and that around sales will be great nonetheless.

When I play a sequel 3-5 years later I don't even know what the fuck the first game was about. To be honest I don't really care. Just make sure to entertain me for 20 hours or so.
