saw this in this blog post

over 90 million sold for the series
Polyphony's founders remain working on GT today after 25 years
Polyphony have over 200 people

I don’t think there are many video game franchises in the world that have continued for 25 years with the same title, and with the same team.

The founding members of the company are still working on the front lines, and I am thankful and proud that all 200 of our staff are a team that have the same motivation and love that the company started with in the beginning.

In the last 25 years, the cumulative sales total of the series have reached over 90 million copies as of November 16, 2022.

edit: rough quick fact check and math on series sales

GT1 11 million
GT2 9 million
GT3 15 million
GT4 12 million
GT PSP 5 million
GT5P 5 million
GT5 12 million
GT6 6 million
PS1 PS2 PS3 PSP total ~ 75 million

GTS ~ 10 million
GT7 ~ 5 million (and counting)
PS4 PS5 total ~ 15 million (and counting)

GT4 is one of my all time favorite racing games and games in general so this is no surprise to me

GT7 has the most addictive gameplay loop they've ever done, IMO. I enjoy firing this up on the daily.
I like it, but I haven't gone back in awhile. I finished the campaign (cafe) and the license tests, as well as the World Circuits. I went back and did the Cafe's they added with DLC too. The only thing I want to do is the music rally races at some point. Now that they finally gave us the long awaited C8, I am going to fire it back up this weekend.

So, we can finally do the math about sales of GT7?
Well according to this, a little less than 5 million copies so far

OR, and I just remembered this, NASCAR ran three races in Japan - 96/97 at Suzuka and 98 at the Twin Ring Motegi oval. Could be taken at one of those... not sure what the buildings look like at the tracks to place him though.

They used to have NASCAR in the game. Wish they still did that license and race modes.
I need Jeff Gordon in 4k

GT7 has been really great, you can really tell the love and respect for cars and driving the creators have and the feeling you get when you handle the curves properly with the haptic feedback is sooo rewarding.
If they add a VR mode for the PSVR2 next year it can be a killer application for the new headset as well.

GT7 is my GOTY, but I greedily expected a bit more of an update for the 25th anniversary - like a couple of classic tracks. Can’t complain though because they have supported the game really well all year, truth be told.

For all the complaining people did about this game about how “greedy” they were (which is not without some truth) its funny we don’t see similar articles about the amount of free updates they have been putting out since release.

As of 2018 the series was at 80.4

https://www.sie.com/en/corporate/release/2018/180514.html

So it should be around 8-9m for Gran Turismo 7

GT7 has been on the sales charts since launch.

seems like around 5 million for GT7 so far

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
I’m good with the cafe, GT7 is made for all types of racers, it’s not beating Forza in graphics, the “online always” is wrong—GT7 win game of the year? Ok, I tried to tell people it could win. PS5 is only on its first GT game, think about the PS1, 2, 3 and 4 which had multiple.

And money is stupid easy to earn in this.

It also comes from a place of not understanding the appraisal system in the game (or fingers in the ears syndrome). It updates monthly based on Hagerty real world results, so while sometimes the prices go up on Legend and Used Cars, they also sometimes go down. But nobody talks about the later in the outrage of the month.

Very true. I think the problem that I have is the game is so good, I just want more 😂
It’ll be interesting to see how long they support the game for, before hopefully announcing a PS5 only GT8.

I could see them doing something like a GT7 Sport or whatever by end of gen, Polyphony always used to do different editions of Gran Turismo back in the day on the same console

I played the hell out of the first Gran Turismo. I don’t think I’ve put more than 5 hours in any of the sequels. Not sure why.

I’m hoping GT7 gets added to the PS+ Extra game catalog at some point.

If Sony are clever, they’ll ask PD to develop a standalone GTVR. As much as I’d love them to add VR to GT7, I just don’t want a half-baked effort, like with GT Sport.

I feel like it will probably be similar to sport, as it will sell more copies of GT7 unfortunately. Same thing they are doing with Resident Evil Village VR, VR mode is free with the base game.

And he would’ve kept some of that youthfulness if he would’ve dropped those Cancer sticks, anyway Congrats to his team, Im still disappointed GT7 was a lie and not a return to form.

Just add it to 7, but not half baked. Make the entire game VR like sims are on the PC. Especially will be needed if they plan to bring GT7 to the PC.
I’d at least want a new campaign, or a nice selection of VR cups, covering all car tiers.
Imagine online races in VR. Some of the hand gestures would be hilarious 😂

I wouldn’t be surprised if the next GT game ends up coming out at the end of the PS5 lifecycle, seems to be the form 2 per generation.

PS1: 1-2
PS2: 3-4
PS3: 5-6
PS4: S-7
PS5: 7-8?

Fucking love this series. Last week i was playing GT5 on PS3. Crazy how well the game runs on PS3. Also, GT5 has a ton of fun content. I wish they bring back nascar races.

Also!!!! the licenses on GT5 are really hard to get gold, omfG...

Half of the time I spent playing games this year was me thinking “I should be playing GT7”. And half of these times I would force quit whatever I was playing to jump on GT7. My most played game in 2022 and it will be the same in 2023.

It’s super addictive and looks continuously fantastic. Driving those cars never gets hold. One of the few games that make me go “wow, yes give me that native 4K HDR goodness now, I need it”. Best PlayStation game of recent years - after Returnal, of course.

Will probably be my most played game of this entire generation. It's the game that i play between games, grab some random car and do laps around the nurb.

I think the nice QoL on the PS5 of jumping in and out of modes and races lightning fast helps with the overall feel and presentation. It no longer feels like a chore to get into anything. The haptics are so good, I can't play without them either. Which reminds me, when I eventually get a wheel setup for this, it will probably be Logitech's new DDPro wheel due to their feedback system replicating haptics perfectly over other high end wheels. Still have my old wheel setup that is mint for GT5/6, but the difference is night and day in current year.

The gameplay and physics model is the best in the series yet, as well.
