Apparently the XSX version has issues not present on PS5 per DF. Avoid.

I just don't get all those complaints about combat. What were they, blind or something, when devs put this on the screen?

How hard is it to notice and read? What's so hard to understand here, games journalism?

At first I could't figure it out cuz I thought that dodge is based on timings, but it's not, if you see that enemy is trying to attack you, just hold stick left until attack will be completed, then attack, if you see another attack coming, just hold stick right AND THAT'S IT. It's not rocket science, games journalism! I mean, jfc. After I learned how it works I don't have problems anymore, although I haven't fought multiple enemies yet so the time will tell how it all works with multiple enemies.

Now, about performance in actual SP campaign. So, it's... how should I put it... a bit better than in benchmark? I mean, there's still a lot of stutters and sometimes cuz of the stupid thing like light turns on the locked door etc. but it's playable. Just to be sure I locked the game to native 1400p 40 in DX11, so I don't give a f about 60 until multiple patches will be released. So far it reminds me The Chronicles of Riddick and a bit of Pitch Black. Character models are very impressive (not ND level but waay better than in Gears 5), art and art design is great along with atmosphere and sound. So in terms of the actual game and the quality of it outside of performance, I've nothing bad to say at all.

- Does the dodge feel good after mastering it?
- Is the game super linear or more Metroidvania?
- Controlling the character feels like RE2R/TLoU or the same Dead Space, or it's a rigid unresponsive piece of shit like The Evil Within 2?

Don't give a shit about its scores personally as it's basically the same as Alien: Isolation and Days Gone which I both loved to death, but especially the last question will determine whether I'll give them €70 or not.
The dodge feels good enough but i hate that i have to press the stick all the way, it just feels a bit unnatural, like i have concentrate on pushing the stick the right way when normaly it should be like a second nature, it is hard to explain.

The game has a bit of exploration, like you pick a fuse and you can use it to open close doors, it's not a complete straight line, pretty close to dead space but a bit more cutscene heavy, but i'm just like 2 hours in and died a lot, so not much progress, i still don't have a gun.

If feels extremely heavy, heavier than tlou and re2 remake imo, i honestly don't remember how it felt to control isaac, too much time has passed...

Combat against more than one enemy is pretty clunky because the protagonist is not nimble at all and the camera close up\magnetize during whe melee so the fov is extremely low.

Maybe i just need to find a gun to do the melee+weakpoint combo and dispatch enemies faster.

It's not a matter of being hard, the concept is extremely basic and when you have the concept down the 1vs1 are trivial.

It's the fact that the game doesn't like half assed stck movement and that throw people off a bit because we are used otherway with the majority of games.

So enemies can do either a single hit or a 2-hit combo. Can someone confirm if the animation for the first hit in both of those cases is the same? I'm having a hard time figuring out if I should dodge twice or not.

Just wait and see, even if you are not super fast with your melee attack when they finish, they stay there 1-2 seconds waiting for your attack, so just wait after the first one, if they stay still, then attack.

Performance issues aside, I mean this seems like a dead space 2. That game is a bunch of corridors, few boss fights and minimal characters and plot. It had atmosphere though. Which this game seems to have. Still tempted in getting it. God of War was good, but it felt like I was playing a Disney game.

Well I think that I didn't belived that this game will have this much focus on malee combat. This is what was showned before in the trailers but survival horrors tend to (not all but some) crank the intensity of the fights closer to the end. It's fine (maybe not so much as more intimated approuch from the begining) if the game has a gameplay suited for that. But as of yesterday when I've seen the two hour gameplay I was thinking - ok, so this game force you to use malee and then fire a gun at weak spot. It works ok one on one and kind of ok with two on one (AI for second enemy is less agressive or I'd say it goeas to idle mode until the first one is down or stuned). But with more of them I thought that it can break. Still I thought that they found a way for that in balance or maybe something else. It seams they didn't and that's the problem that at least journalists have (Gamestop review video has this nasty scene where the whole screen is full of enemies and player is just mashing the hit button with the hope that he'll make it).

For me they wanted to have a cake and eat a cake simultaneously. They should've make the encounters more or less like the same as at the begining (which would've been boring) or make the gameplay more like God of War style (which they couldn't for the good of horror elements). What I mean is that you need a weapon to deal with crowds of enemies. Also the close camera position isn't good for that - you need some kind of warning for the player that the hit is close. It doesn't have to be like in GoW, but maybe integrated into clothes of the character. In the end you can just give the player a powerfull weapons to shoot but in makes the main combat rules irrelavent then. Maybe there can be a nice balance in this (I think there is) but they haven't figured it out.

I haven't played it yet, I'll wait some time before I do but for what I gathered it seams that they had a nice idea for the game. They just didn't thought it through (like how will it play further into the game) or didn't adjusted the design into rules that they established at first. It's for different type of game or needed to be upgraded to work in the long run.

Played about an hour this morning before work. The polish on the game is apparent from the offset and the haptics on Dualsense are peak. I am having a bit of difficulty with the combat where you hold the left stick to one side then another. That might get better as time goes on. But I can easily see how the sound design, haptics and visuals will make for a treat on their own.

Don’t be afraid to die with some of the first monsters until you get the dodge system. The game normally loads right before. Test the system and it will click. Then it’s second nature.

Upgrade the baton fast and get the heavy attack. 1v1s are pointless when heavy attacks make the fly to the floor. Just keep spamming it 😂

Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
He is spot on when he talk about combat against multiple enemies, the game is REALLY not suited for that.
The glove changes this drastically and empowers you in that regard. You still gotta use it wisely since the use is limited in the beginning. The levels are literally filled with explosive things to grab and throw or obstacles in which you can push enemies.

I only just started, but it looks like you can alleviate most reviewer complaints within the options menu. In addition to three difficulty levels it features a lot of other stuff you can enable/disable. Auto-dodge, single button qte's or completely automated ones, snap-to auto aim, aim assist, etc.

At only an hour in I wouldn't say the combat is bad, but it is very different. Don't have a gun yet, so that is just my impressions on melee so far.

oh rly! damn.

I'm using a 7900X for what it's worth. Should be absolutely demolishing this..
You will have better time than on 5600X for sure, problem is that, they could have crammed that into a loading and it would be all far better (yes it would take large portion of RAM/VRAM), but the fuck cares about that while gaming.

It’s funny how the big games are talked about every granular accessibility feature and we have a few critical ones here but no, let’s cry instead.

Are the negative reviews due to PC nerds being upset it doesn’t work that well on their 1k+ status box?
Apparently the stuttering issue is pretty significant for some. So, I think that's pretty understandable. SkillUp even addresses it in his video, really takes away from a number of things apparently. Especially scares, which I'm sure could get old pretty fast.

lmao, you get coated with gore every 30 seconds, but them prison issue jumpers are clean as a whistle moments later.

Ok so I just watched the skillup video and usually I agree with him but I think he this time he was just looking for something else that this game isn't trying to be, im not looking for an award winning heavy story or a third person shooter when I look at this. Its like the movies that are in the same vein, I want to see cool environments with monsters and tension. I'm not looking for award winning story telling, im looking for something in line with Pandorum.

Not every game is a masterpiece and thats ok.

I played maybe a 1h yesterday , the graphics are top notch , i was having problems with the dodging but once you start bashing them it's satisfying ! I love the gore , hopefully it sells well enough to turn into a franchise !

Fucking nothing's working in this game. Optimization - Never heard of that, crazy fps drops, stutters are insane, you name it. Combat - too much melee and gets really frustrating once you're attacked by many enemies, did I mention you also have to fight crazy stutters? HDR - not working. Accessibility options - I enabled them and it's not working. Luckily I'm on steam so just pulled the plug on refund button. This is worst AAA(oh sorry AAAA) release of 2022. I was so looking forward to this game but it has been a huge letdown. Thanks to steam's policy I can refund the game. I predict the game is going to fail hard and will be on sale real soon.

It took me literally one try after their explanation to naild down how it works.

Good to know, because for now the locations are not nearly big enough to really avoid enemies and dealing with one at the time.

My copy from Best Buy should arrive today. Will be giving some impressions and initial pros and cons after playing a few hours later tonight.

How are the DualSense features implemented so far? Good? Overused?

Yeah so far all the reviews read as "too dead space, too hard" and I'm like "thats what I wanted" so I'm still all in on this. Not having NG+ on release is a major gripe though, that kinda thing carries survival horror games for me.

Another game with Sony marketing running shite on everything but PS5? Rough.

Does the game have a decent check point system? I don't mind dying a lot if I don't get thrown too far back to repeat shit I have already done.
