Red Dead Redemption 2 is still the best open world game made

While Take 2 and Rockstar are less to be desired in their current shifts and "definitive editions" they unleashed to the world... the only issue I can see with them not released a "60fps patch," would be that it's a big undertaking with lower extraction layers on the consoles and animations/physics all tied to the framerate. But that is probably giving them too much benefit of the doubt.

Then again, over 50 million sold and only T2/R* couldn't be fucked with continued QoL support.
I would think that technical work was already done with the PC port.

Great western simulator, terrible videogame. I still can't understand why people blow this game so much, it was a drag with clunky controls and boring moment to moment gameplay.

PC has extraction layers, so it would not be 1:1. Just throwing out guesses where some games needed to be patched on the console with a little more work than just a toggle added to get 60 due "coding to the metal." RDR2 does squeeze every bit of juice compared to most third parties on consoles.

Its probably an eye candy for all those graphics fetish guys, but its an ultra boring game. Red Dead 1 is miles better.

I agree with you OP. I've played it twice, once on ps4 pro and once on Xbox one x and I've enjoyed it thoroughly. I have to admit I was initially frustrated by its animations and controls, but later on got accustomed to animations and changed controls scheme so it stopped bothering me. I thought about buying it again during this sale but I'll postpone it to new years sale probably as I have many other games to play, even though your post and screenshot are pushing me to buy it right now.

I mean it's a great open world and it looks insane don't get me wrong. But GTA IV has yet to be beat by Rockstar. The NPC interaction in that game was hilarious. For example, in that game NPC's would get into car accidents, get chased by cops and shoot at eachhother. Why are these simple interactions missing in Red Dead 2?

It's awesome watching the NPC's do their "jobs". But only one or two of them in Valentine have a home to go sleep at. While the others just aimlessly roam around and hang out at the bar all night.

Plus the A.I. in general isn't that great when you compare it to Far Cry 2 which I personally consider to be the best open world game.

Funny you mentioning being the best game ever when the most important aspect that is gameplay is shit (one of the worst ever). Maybe they should make a movie next time.
I personally didn’t even mind the gameplay, that just might be me. Gunplay sucked but with aim assist I didn’t hate it enough to put me off anything, it was just there I guess.

The stuck in the mud movement and gameplay ruined it for me. It was a hate play if there ever was one for me.

I will say that the characters, graphics, and sound are great but I can’t get over the other stuff.

I really liked the change in tone of the characters when at the campsite as the story progresses. Starts up with hope and that they will be headed off to a better place. By the end, the mood is tense and everyone is bitter, angry, and little trust left.

A lot of people seem to need scintillating moment to moment action. That's cool. That's also why a lot of people found Red Dead Redemption 2 to be a snooze.

Personally, I fucking loved the "clunky" controls. I walked everywhere and never ran in that game unless it made sense and no doubt that's why I have over 200 hours in it. Its probably also why so many people tried to play it like GTA and got mad when they kept running into people in the street and then attracted attention from the law. But I felt like I was actually inhabiting the world, taking note of all the NPCs I walked by, all the beautiful flora and fauna, and all the cool little moments the devs sprinkled around. I'm not bored taking a five minute walk through the woods in this game. Hell, I wouldn't even gallop my horse unless it made sense.

But I'm the type of person that installs survival mods in Skyrim and that loves the combat in The Witcher 3. I'll mod out minimaps and fucking loved Elden Ring for not including one. I also walked everywhere with Geralt. Some people need the instant acceleration of a DMC or Souls game and a lot of shooty set pieces to not be bored. This game isn't that and I love it all the more for it.

The only way RDR2 could be a better game for me is if they removed the arbitrary fail states from missions and made you feel like you had some agency in the mission design. Bonus points for full-on immersive sim style missions where you could actually tackle things in your own way and use the game's systems to your benefit. Such a shame this doesn't exist because this game has amazing systems just waiting to be used in more creative ways during missions.

Basically RDR2 is a slow fucking game. That's not for everyone, but I fucking love this about it.

I only started to play it a few weeks ago, like a mere 50 hours in, just got to ch5. My first time playing it, on PC, graphics are insane, keeps 110-120 fps (got a monitor cap).

I’m super impressed. It’s so good, I get completely immersed in this game, the dialogues, the animations, the horses, everything is out of this world. I can’t imagine any devs, even rockstar, matching this anytime soon. It’s so polished.

Fun is subjective.
I think the game is a kind of majestic, sprawling epic that you have to calm down to experience.
I mean if you rush through a well-made, exquisite dessert I bet you wouldn't enjoy it either.
It's relaxing and very thrilling if you're in the right mood and frame of mind.

Exactly this. Its a brilliant game all round if you have the right temprament and enjoy a slower paced game. Its deliberately slow and methodical and doesnt pander to twitch gamers in any way, imo its all the better for it.

Ppl who say its boring just arent the target audience, but still have a moan about it anyway.

No open world comes close to this imo. Really want to play it again but still holding out hope for a 60fps patch.

The number of things you can see and do blows all other open worlds outta the water. There's always a reason to explore. Hidden stories.. some rare photo-opportunity.. random shit like executions, highway robberies to even crazier shit: the UFO, Vampire, wild men in caves, or the Ghost girl... Too much to list. The mindblowing animal ecosystem ALONE can pass off the game a full-fledged hunting&nature sim. NPCs have impressive AI and schedules with day-and-night cycles.. Lively world making you feel ACTUAL SHIT can go on without you, unlike most other games where the world relies on your activity.

Games like TLOU1&2 and HFW might edge this1 out in NPC facial animation, gore and some texture detail, but sheer scope & the fact it maintains visuals & detail afar off is incredible on its own. More insane that on XOne/PS4 shit looks even better than 95% of next-gen games. Sick killcams & multitude of takedown combos make fights feel raw, fun and engaging. Also the top-notch sound design. Ambient & freeroam music, environmental sounds and cutscene tunes.. All reflect soul & emotion.

That's without even going to the extremely well-written story, insane range of acting, characters with personalit, deep backstories & an array of crazy side-tales. The story of RDR2 is top-tier, and Arthur Morgan is top 5, if not the GOAT gaming protag.

Glad there's a unique game like this. A methodic, historic piece bold enough to take on weight&heft as an approach to movement, and dialling depth, interactivity & immersion to 11. I'll never understand wanting DMC & Souls controls with instant momentum & zero reaction to the environment in here. I keep discovering stuff I never knew before after over 3 years.. Been playing this shit on PC and it's easily the best looking game of all time. This is the pinnacle of open-world gaming. We won't see another game of this magnitude anytime soon.

I'm curious as to how one can hold both games in similar high regards. Their approaches are almost at polar opposites.
Yep they are like water and oil but open world both...Elden Ring never lets you get bored , the lore is great. sonehow never felt the need to leave the game no matter how long where my sessions. RDR is grear but has its boring moments something that never found on ER.

Hype post bro, you brought back how much I loved this game when it came out. I spent so long sat in a bar people watching.

That bit where you go abroad felt soooo tacked on though. It puts me off playing again. That and the character movement around the camp.

I have only two real complaints about the game. It’s too slow paced which is fine the first go, you really stretch your legs and live in the world. You can almost smell the campfire smoke and feel the fingernail grit under Arthur’s hands. Which is fine the first time but the second playthrough feels like a chore.

The second problem is that despite the world being large and detailed and a cut above all others, it’s incredibly static with some smoke and mirrors to make you believe it’s dynamic. You won’t notice right away but after awhile it becomes obvious and it’s a bit of a turnoff, especially with how no matter what you do the missions are all pass/fail the way Rockstar wanted.

I like the world but I quit before I finished. I didn't like how Arthur's story ultimately unfolded and was put off then I got busy with other things and never went back.

It was by far the best looking game of last generation. It doesn't hurt that Rockstar has over 2000 employees working on their games and take a huge amount of time to develop them.

In term of how complex the open world is yes and nothing will come close until the next GTA.

In term of fun… debatable. It is good don’t get me wrong but I prefer the Witcher 3.

RDR is undeniably one of the most technically impressive and well designed open worlds ever created in a video game. It's a shame that Rockstar missed the memo about making that open world fun to play around in.

Its a one of a kind game if you take your time with it. But I totally get people who do not disliking it. Personally, I loved it. Mostly I appreciate the way it organically builds its world instead of relying on pointers and markers to guide you towards the next best interesting thing. The best content is the one that happens simply by giving the world time to unfold.

Also, turning off the HUD regularly results in gameplay moments reaching E3-style guided demo levels of cohesion and immersion. It truly enriches the experience. So far, no other game ever managed to do that.

Most memorable moment I had was while exploring Saint Denis, wandering off into an alley only to be robbed by a gang of street urchins. I became wanted by police after a short shootout, and as I was navigating through the alleys and streets trying to shake my pursuers I saw patrols charging by me in search of me as I was hiding out of sight. The camera and motion capture made all of it feel so organic. It's hard to put into words, it really has to be experienced. It's just so many different mechanics and systems coming together resulting in an experience greater than the sum of its parts.

I'm currently playing Cyberpunk 2077, and while Night City is a marvelous achievement in its own right, it simply feels dead and soulless next to Red Dead II. Like, you can just see the outlines which make up the world in it's entirety, whereas in RDR2 the world truly feels seemless in comparison.

I mean I would absolutely rank Elden Ring just as good game as RDR2 making them the two best open world games out there.

It's hard to pick one when they both shine at different areas. RDR2 has the most beautiful and lively open world which makes you feel like you are almost living in that era. Elden Ring on the other hand shines at combat and especially at level design which is a rare thing for open world games.

It's $20 on PC. So much better with a smooth frame rate. I own it on Xbox but if it's never going to get updated, it's useless to me. On PC it's been amazing. I just got back into it. It's a masterpiece. Can't wait to play more tonight!

I legitimately don't understand people who praise Elden Ring's open world

having good combat and "level design" has nothing to do with the design of its open world, which is nothing more than pretty window dressing meant to lead you to the next boss fight.

How come GTA 1, 2, 3, VC and SA, MP3, Table Tennis, Bully, LA Noire, Manhunt play like shit?
Pls, don't tell me you are judging them by the potato console versions.
Post ps1(nobody remembers pre gta3 rockstar), yes, The controls are shit and have always been shit. They were always sluggish. Table tennis may be an exception but I'm not about to play a sports game. LA noir lol

Console versions of Rockstar games should not even be remembered, even less played and used for judgement. On PC,1 and 2 are still amazing and we can still even play online. The controls on PC versions of GTAs up to SA never were shit.

I love RDR2, put well over 100 hours in it, got it day 1 and over all enjoyed my playthrough...better then most open world titles? Sure...

the best open world game made? nahhhhhh thats just not feasible with its issues.

The controls, the horrid delay, the resetting of the weapon wheel (not sure why that thought that was a good idea) lol

The lack of open world freedom to do the fucking concept the game is about, being an outlaw. You can't rob banks or even trains FREELY in the open world, its as if Rockstar forgot free agency when trying to build some narrative and trying to restrict what the player can do as if that would benefit the game or something, even the odd pass / fail missions never made sense as they don't allow you to have many options to beat a mission, merely 1 way.

Even the open world stuff you can do, barely work and hurt the experience. Put a mask on to rob someone? They magically know you fucking SSN, blood type, DNA lol, put up a bandana to cover some of your face? They got a poster showing your full name, birth certificate, high school grades, a mole on your buttcheek lol

These issues are big enough that I can never put it in "the best open world", better them most sure, but it simply has too many issues that negate it from ever having that top spot, and I say this as someone that actually liked that game, but I must sperate that fandom to give a real view on its issues.

Gameplay must come first, this is a game we are playing, not merely fucking looking it. Its an incredible looking game, but we are here to play them first and foremost and that is what I must rate this GAME on primarily. If they make a prequel or sequel and fix all of that. Let us rob all the banks, trains, stores, make mask fucking work (please don't flag this as a covid comment mods lol, its not as it sounds) allow the character to actually remember that weapon wheel by taking dem 1 A Days Pills, correct the sluggish controls as we don't need to hold down L2 and hold down square just to do simple task.

This is pretentious and exaggerated and actually hurts the experience.

This should have always been a fast pace, gun slinging violent affair, not a slow, tank, cumbersome experience where you feel you are fighting the controls more then bandits.

So maybe Butch's plan should be to correct all this shit before a prequel or RDR3 before we hand that crown over to best open world game lol

I wonder if this is why I love it now and only liked it before but it became a slog on console. I am on PC now and using that reflex feature in the settings that is supposed to reduce input lag. Maybe it's how responsive it feels compared to the console version since on top of that feature it's 60 fps at least...

One of my favorites. Was pissed when Rockstar cancelled the current gen port. Owners of the PS4 version are stuck with 30fps and a bizarre resolution (1920x2160) on a PS5.
