So what happens when they hit that target? They pray that GamePass will keep people subscribing? They practically gave away the One S last generation and that didn't translate to much even though GamePass existed then as well. It's weird if their strategy is to do exactly the same things they did unsuccessfully last generation.
Difference between last gen and this gen, is the studios, and support they are getting from MS.
And here is what people who buy xss get.

New games coming to Game Pass in 2022

Here are the games expected to join GP this year. The highlights of this section are Warhammer 40,000: Darktide and Pentiment. We also have high hopes for High On Life - a game by Rick & Morty co-creators.

Upcoming Game Pass games - the first half of 2023

Some of the most anticipated AAA games will join the subscription early in 2023. We look forward to finally playing Forza Motorsport, Starfield, and Redfall, as well as older Persona titles that Atlus decided to share with GP members. The sequel to ARK: Survival Evolved and The Last Case of Benedict Fox should also provide us with long hours of gameplay 😉

Only on GAF will you find some users complaining about a discount coupon as a negative.
It's weird how some people see price increases as good and and discounts as bad.

Do you see what is going in the world right now?
Everything is expensive now. Even our house rent went by extra $300 a month. That is how bad the economy is.

Your old method isnt going to attract consumers. Making it cheap would allow them to join gamepass family, which is what MS wants now.

I hear everything you're saying, we just disagree on whether the macroeconomy is the reason behind this particular strategy. Fun discussion nevertheless. Much more stimulating than Sourapple with the emoji drops!

So what you're saying is that lowering console prices is a bad thing and that they should be more expensive?

No better/worse than Circuit City (I hope you're old enough to know what I'm talking about) liquidating it's inventory to move products; of course it's great for the consumer, but the business would rather not have found themselves in that particular situation stemming from poor business operations. Same concept applies here, albeit not nearly as dire.

I understand where you are coming from.
But MS isnt playing around this gen. Their goal is gamepass. The console is just a tool for that. If they cared more about their console, Xss wouldnt have existed. Or even do day1 PC.

Xbox one damage is still present, and they need to wash that out this gen. Gain as much consumer as possible. That drop from 360 (85m) to x1(55+m) was bad. They lost nearly 30m userbase, due to x1.

So yes, they're basically praying that people will keep subscribing to GamePass.

FUCKING BALLER at emulation. Even the Series S is capable of up to original Xbox and PS2 games via PCSX2. if you're looking for a good emulation box for your living room/TV this is it

The Series consoles are fan-fucking-tastic at emulation.

There's 2 semi-active threads on GAF covering Retroarch and a more recent XBSX2 port, which is basically a more up-to-date PCSX2.

Perfect, I'm reading over the threads now because I saw there was some changes to developer mode and after that I zoned out months ago. But I figured between this or an Nvidia shield, well, it's a MUCH easier sell at this price.

Every business does not want to be GamePass and if they did Nintendo would probably be kicking everyone's asses on that front.
This is your problem. You are comparing MS to other companies.
MS makes money from subscription services. That is their entire business model(Azure and Office). They know this business.

Alright sold. $200 for a Series S is too good to pass up. I have a gaming PC and GamePass already so this would just be a second system so the wife and kid can play in the living room, and maybe get some multiplayer Redfall going in the house when the time comes

Yes, I'm old enough to remember Circuit City, but I'm not sure how Black Friday discounting is equivalent to a failed big box electronics store liquidating their inventory.

It's kind of tough to say that Microsoft is in a bad state from poor business operations. It's clear that they're trying to get boxes into homes to enable more software and services sales. It's an aggressive move to expand market share. They're not the first company to lose money on products to gain a larger foothold. They can easily afford to do this.

A $200 Series S is impulse buy territory leading into the mass consumption holiday season. Doing this ahead of a looming global recession where people could have less free income to spend on entertainment is strategic. It sets them up to advertise to the mass market that a $200 console and $10 - $15 per month for access to a library of more than a hundred games and day 1 access to first party releases is a better value than a $400 PS5 digital and $70 games or a $300 Nintendo Switch and $60 games.

The best part is you don't even need dev mode anymore. You can run all the emulators on any retail console.

Either people are willfully ignorant that this isn’t Microsoft offering a 20% discount on Series X (its Instagram doing it and Microsoft happened to have a store connected), or know and they’re just being purposeful warriors

It's the later. This being a 20% Instagram discount, and not an Xbox price cut, is in the very OP itself.

People who came in this thread with a specific goal in mind don't care about trivial things like 'facts'. :messenger_winking:

I know the business as well. Just not on the gaming side. And I know a lot about how much cash teams can burn because they work for a company with fat pockets.

It's really not that difficult ..

The console is still selling at MSRP. You just get a 20% discount via instagram only if this is the first time you're buying something from the instagram store.

If you've ever bought something from it, you won't get the discount.

That being said, it looks like the Series X might have sold out on their instagram store now. If anyone still sees them, get 'em before it's over.

The irony... Instagram is a marketplace, not a retailer. It doesn't matter what label you assign the promotion, the two parties (microsoft/instagram) came to an inconsequential agreement on optics of promotion, but microsoft is selling the product on the IG platform and THEY dictate discount amount. Do you really think instagram is buying the console at ~$475-$480 and selling at $399? As an online marketplace? You guys can't be this naïve.

No.

I think you're over thinking the fuck out of what is a 20% discount on THE ENTIRE MICROSOFT STORE, and not just Xbox.

It's not overthinking, in fact it rarely gets more basic than this. I don't know what you're even saying anymore. And your excessive use of emojis suggests to me that you don't either. Let's try a different approach - who do you think is absorbing the cost of the discount specifically for XSX console (other products in the store are irrelevant)? Microsoft or Instagram?

I find it strange that they are giving a $100 discount on the series X when they are claiming these things are selling out due to high demand and low supply.

So why give a discount on something that is always selling out and out of stock? Doesn't make any sense. Bomba.

The huge discounts on the already cheap series S is understandable since these things are always on the shelves and were collection dusts.

Also, this is why unit sales and dollar sales (revenue) is important for context. One console manufacturer, Sony is selling their consoles due to the high demand, and the other company tries to boost demand by fire sales. It will be interesting to see the results when NPD releases their reports.

I mean you can laugh, but, in the past, Sony routinely discounts store stuff sans certain items. I remember them having a sale except the VAIO I wanted way back in the day when they still made them. I think they did it with their uber high-end Pro camera phone too,

If the X and S are in high-demand, as we're assuming, why not just exempt them and save the store? I dunno.

Who cares ? You should take the discount while it's there, not worry about a trillion dollar companies financial status :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I don't know about Sony sales, but this is very clearly stated as a store wide discount only for first time buyers, it does not apply to literally anywhere else you can buy the consoles from.

That being said, the fact that multiple users are bringing up this coupon drop of hardware that is still sold out on many big box retail stores as some kind of a negative is mind blowing :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I’ve never seen people so upset over a black friday deal on a plastic box before.

There’s black friday deals on lots of popular item’s including iPhone’s which there are billions of owners…

If you are here “pitying” Microsoft or calling them “embarassing” you can’t be any more transparent.

Literally every company does this because it makes sense. Like I said, I can understand the strategy being applied to the S, but not the premium console as well.

Lol why not? It interests me. You're coming off a bit sycophantic here. Again, I am looking at this from a business strategy perspective, not as a consumer.

Honestly no one is upset. We are putting this in the context of the console market at present and also analyzing this move against Microsoft's recent claims that demand still exceeds supply considerably; not difficult at all to understand why this is a head scratcher for many of us. If you want to praise the deal as consumer friendly then great because it absolutely is that. But don't get frustrated when others analyze from a different perspective.

You are playing/are stupid or just warring, not sure yet which one is accurate; this 20% off the whole store including the flagship devices like surface pro, surface studio laptop etc. not on;y Xbox consoles. Only applicable to first purchasers via this channel.

MS is literally counting down the seconds until they have a sizable userbase with an Xbox and no games, and then they’ll raise the price of Game Pass. They want to get into everyone’s home, have everyone subbed in their ecosystem, and then wait out the competition.
What a bold prediction.

DenchDeckard

Moderated wildly
Microsoft is taking a bath to sell consoles this holiday cuz they ain’t got no games. I respect their boldness.

This is a fact tbh. Look at your output now you've lost starfield how do you compete. You're not spending as much marketing on anything but generic game pass adds etc so what do you do. Get creative with your marketing budget and work out how you invest differently and they've put it into the product.

Best plan really

Honest question, does anybody know what videogames Microsoft actually has on this thing? I would order the Series X.

I already tried Halo Infinite on the PC and immediately uninstalled it 2 minutes into a match. I also have zero interest in Gamepass, I rather own my videogames outright. I already have Gears 5 it’s ass, and I’m not driving a virtual car around a lap in a videogame.

All of the big 3rd parties + forza, grounded, psychonauts 2, sea of thieves, pentiment, flight sim, scorn and plenty more, soon high on life will hit along with multiple others AA/AAA timed exclusives.

15+ games are coming this week alone;
https://www.purexbox.com/features/these-15plus-games-are-coming-to-xbox-next-week-november-21-25

You will struggle to find time to play it all.

But I have all these burger king coupons to unload.

Really though I have no idea how to buy things off instagram.
I work at burger king. I'll hook you up.

Would you like a double Spencer with cheese or Cortana fries?

I'll throw in an xsx made out of moldy fries.

I think all of those videogames I looked up are on PC as well, that’s what’s up. There’s literally no point at all though in buying this thing. If Microsoft allowed a Windows OS installation, I would buy it asap Rocky and just big picture mode it underneath my TV.

So you weren't actually asking "honestly", everyone knows all Xbox games come to Windows, you were just trying to get your dig in like many other posters in here. lol
