Stop Skeletons From Fighting: Game Room - Xbox's Forgotten Retro Gaming Failure

In this video, I take a look at Microsoft's failed attempt to enter the retro console market with Game Room on the Xbox 360. No, their console app didn't beat the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console or even Playstation 3's Play Station Home, but it did have some cool features. I examine their Krome Studios developed virtual arcade service, which offered Atari games, Intellevision games, Konami arcade games and other classics on the Xbox 360. Overall, it's an interesting video that covers a little-known part of Microsoft's history.

0:00 - Hey I'm Derek, It's Me Derek!
2:10 - Ritual Vitamins
3:51 - "An Everything Emulator"
6:19 - Krome Studios
8:37 - the POWER of Xbox Live
10:49 - Xbox 360 Launch!
12:27 - The end of nice things to say about Game Room
14:15 - Atari, Intellivision, and Konami
17:04 - Microsoft's Biggest Mistake
18:43 - Freemium Mobile and Retro Games
20:08 - Gamepass Predecessor?
22:30 - ...and that was Microsoft Game Room
24:21 - Patreon, Shelf Talk, + Stay Powerful!

I loved the idea of Game Room, but the implementation was all wrong. I had to download the games first, then I bought the games piecemeal. After awhile, I just didn’t care to be bothered to download it. I suppose an automatic title update would have been better, but I think Capcom nailed it with their arcade collection. Hell, even Hamster did a better job just releasing each arcade game as an individual game icon.
Perhaps without Game Room, none of those ideas would have happened. I love how my Switch is a miniature arcade.

I don’t watch any videos with the “ exaggerated facial expression “ marking bs on the thumbnail.

This was such a cool idea, that sadly didn’t get the support from the crucial third parties, that it needed.

Pretty much your own arcade room from what I remember.

Has nothing to do with fun. It’s basically saying “ hey , you are so much of a dumbass that me pretending to be excited or surprised will also get you excited or surprised “.
I do not support the dumbing down of society.
It's just an innocent image...

You must be so fun in parties.

no they are meant for everyone. I've heard the pitch personally working with marketing firms. PR marketers tell youtubers that it gains more attention.. and it probably does. but so does reality shows with rich ladies fighting.. 🤷‍♂️ got to have some priciples.

The Microsoft of today that pumps tons of money into Game pass could probably make this more of a success now. They would pay off everyone with a retro back catalog and make Game Room a separate feature of Game Pass.

Its not about that, its about pleasing the shitty YT algorithm so his video even has a chance of getting seen. I have watched some of this guys stuff back in the day, and if you look at his thumbnails from 3+ years ago, his face was rarely on the thumbnail at all. There are other people I watch that post on YT that say the same thing, even if they don't make the same kind of thumbnails, its all about pleasing the algorithm for visibility.

Edit*: Forgot to mention, I am totally with you on the stupid fucking faces. And I hate to see even people I like on YT with giant open mouths and big arrows on the thumbnails. If it is about pleasing the algorithm its fucking awful that creators have to make content and/or stupid thumbnails for please a fucking bot, then post something they want to make.

YouTube doesn’t give a shit about your expression in a thumbnail. It has no bearing on any algorithm.

Great idea. Nice UI.

Worst pricing ever. To play the games, you bought fake tokens as if youre at an arcade or paid about $5 cdn each for Atari 2600 and Intellivision games.
