New Chinese open world game announced: Project: The Perceiver - coming to PS4&PS5

Official website: https://perceiver.infoldgames.com/home

About

In a quagmire of endless war, conviction is your only way out. Observe every facet the world, and witness a kaleidoscope of ideals.

Project: The Perceiver is a multiplatform Chinese open-world action game developed by Papergames’ 17ZHE Studio.

The game explores clashing beliefs in a fantasy world. Experience a chaos-ridden world and meet a variety of characters as the Master of Varietas. Consolidate their distinctive ideals into masks, and engage in the fiercest battles.

World

  • Turmoil
    • In the annals of history, an era of chaos is merely a few words, yet ordinary people can suffer for generations to come.
    • During the Tianhu period of the Xuantang dynasty, a bizarre entity was discovered in the countryside. Its color was foul, and its shape was impossible to describe. The people were frightened. Despite attempts to divine this Omen, no conclusion could be reached.
      • —Miscellaneous Records of Xuantang: The Book of Omens
  • Explore – Numerous secrets lie hidden in places you have yet to explore.
  • Domains – The world you perceive is the world that exists.
Gameplay

  • Dueling – Sometimes it takes a clash of arms to see a person for who they are.
Characters

  • Mask of Devotion – My play does not require an audience when everyone under heaven is involved.
  • Mask of Umbra – Where there is shadow, there shall be light—and the shadow is thus validated.
  • TBA

Seen this last night, “looks” fantastic.

Like a next-gen Sekiro/The Pathless

Has there ever been a Fantasy old lawless West game? Basically Red Dead Redemption but with more fantasy?
I feel like the East has made about 12 dozen of these fantasy old East games and they have started to blend together in my mind.

Rip-off or not (don't see anyone calling Wo Long/ Rise of The Ronin rip-offs, oh right Chinese devs are related to all bad shit China's ever done somehow) this is exciting to me. I think it's the closest looking to the classic Hong Kong swordplay movies I've seen from a video game:

Now the question is, like with the other dozen Chinese and Korean open world fantasy action games announced... will it ever come out?

"Project something" + Chinese dev + promising looking gameplay.
Looks cool but there's like 80% chance this is either vaporware or it will come out in 8 years looks differently.

Trailer itself looks nice but these Chinese games REALLY need some variety. They all have nearly identical settings and art direction

That's something I've noticed, too. The stuff from South Korea by comparison, has a much more diverse palette in those areas. Stellar Blade and DokeV couldn't be more different (btw I still want to see some new DokeV footage).

This game does look really good visually and combat is looking fun, but there's been a lot of samurai-themed games in just the past two years, plus there's that Yakuza Ishin game coming plus Rise of the Ronin in 2024, and we know for sure there's a Ghosts of Tsushima 2 in the works. Sometimes, just sometimes, it all kind of feels like it could blend into each other. Though I'd say Ghosts is the most distinct of that lot from a small glance.

They all have their distinct styles though, and theme-wise they're still a smaller segment of the open-world market compared to other types of open world-themed games. Maybe it's just the compressed time period in which some of these new projects have been announced, is all. We'll probably see more of what makes this particular game distinct in its own way in future previews, I'm looking forward to learning more.

Rise of The Ronin, Ghost of Tsushima 2 and now this 🤩

Where are all the Chinese devs getting these big budgets for games. Sony is helping?

Well, most folks don't realize the very essential context but politics actually strongly dictate the direction of most Chinese devs.

CCP has enforced this "culture confidence" policy in Chinese entertainment industries for years - TVs, movies, music, and video games, they all need to boast the "grand and rich Chinese culture and history". Developing a big budget game set in West? You must be a west bootlicker and don't you dare even dream of your game being approved to be published on market. That's why most dev can only play safe, and use ancient Chinese dynasty for their games. It is a creativity tragedy.

And if you check the smaller budget or indie games where the developer can bypass Chinese administration and directly put their games on Steam, you find great diversity of themes and settings. Check those out, they are all highly rated on steam:

Don't forget Assassin's Creed RED! Technically that's gonna be a ninja game, but I'm sure it'll be similar. Looks like we'll be drowning in wandering swordsmen games soon enough.

Ghost of Tsushima 2
Assassin's Creed Red
Rise of the Ronin
Where Winds Meet
Project The Perceiver
Code: To Jin Yong
Honor of Kings: World

Yakuza Ishin
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
Lost Souls Aside
Faith of Danschant: Hereafter

So uh, are there any games like this where you play as a hot ass female samurai (or whatever the chinese equivelant is)? I mean in this time period. Bayonetta gets a samurai sword in Bayo 1, and of course Nier Automata characters have Katana weapons as well, but it's the setting I am also interested in. INB4 Nioh 2.

Yeah, there is one out rn, not a hardcore style game tho just light action RPG,

A souls style one coming but it looks pretty stiff tbh:

Yeah, I am actually more interested in the sword and fairy game. Too much stress involved in soulsborne like games for me. Anything else like S and F?

Onee Chanbara Origin is exactly what you want, it is coming to PS plus extra this month.

If you are talking about modern Wuxia fantasy, Xuan-Yuan Sword VII is in similar setting. But the game is not as good as S and F.

In fact, Xuan-Yuan Sword and Sword and Fairy are the two biggest IPs SoftStar has.

Nice but MEH... too many look a likes. Why can't they make something futuristic cyberpunk dark fantasy ninja samurai game?

This one is pretty fun. Basic hack and slash by small indie devs so don't expect too much.

Gold standard of kung fu RPGs, like asian Witcher 3 (not female-centric tho). With luck the big upcoming AAAs from China will be this gud. Catch is online DRM, download the alternative way to sidestep it.

If you're open to 2D games, this reminiscent of Vanillaware's Muramasa, nice eye candy, can get difficult

Personally I'm looking forward to Wanted: Dead from ex-team Ninja for that female sword/gun action. Doesn't seem too hardcore from what I've seen.

Are they on PS4/5? I do not do PC gaming to be honest.
