No they went to Tiktok instead.

As for Twitter, I reckon it will be the same when Rupert Murdoch brought MySpace in which the platform will slowly die.

So what does the advertiser thing mean? Is it all "My Pillow" ads now because there is nothing else left to run or are there actually FEWER ads because folks paid for X number of spots and now there are unfilled ones? 'Cause I imagine twitter is kinda like late night TV now, just the same couple of ads run over and over, the folks supporting twitter now are making a KILLING with viewership.

It's asking if it will bring the advertisers back.

For $8 a month, I could:

Get Disney Plus, and watch a bunch Star Wars, Marvel, and classic Disney content.
Get Hulu, and watch a bunch of movies and television programs.
Get Twitter, and watch a bunch of people call each other racists and degenerates.

🤔
You’ll be getting ads for the Disney+ price. The non-ads version is $11.

The blue stuff definitely got out of hand, it was simply another tool of control. But I don't think this proposed solution is any good tbh.

You don't have to pay to read or even post tweets.
Imagine if GAF gold had a similar effect here.. Where the "cool kids" discuss in the main very visible area, while the "free-loaders" responses are much less visible throughout the thread and thus get less engagement and or attention.

All of these platforms are there for people to engage with others. If he starts putting restrictions or hurdles on that engagement, then he can't really say that he is full on hard for "free speech". Since he is prioritizing paid speech over free speech. (pun not intended)

PS.. FFS nobody get offended by the "cool kids" and "free loaders" reference.. Added the snobbyness for effect.:messenger_beaming:

Tweets dont work like forums at all.

I know Elon haters are trying to come up with everything under the sun to bash him, but this is getting kinda pathetic.

The overall principal is the same.. All of these platforms basic principal is user engagement between each other. This is a very sharp shift for a platform that portrayed itself as a public square and didn't put monetary barriers/handicaps on user engagement.

FYI.. Personally, I don't care if Twitter fails or not.. Never really used the platform outside of a news app.

This whole thing will be an interesting case study in the future. Who knows, maybe he pulls a rabbit out of his ass. But all the information coming out the last two weeks, sounds like an absolute train wreck..

Twitter wasn't great but this clown is only doing this because he's a butt hurt child like a certain somebody.

Nobody wants to pay for this garbage; he'll kill it through his clown ideas and when he fails he'll say it was what he meant to do.

Imagine using 44 billion for something useful, not a crappy social media platform so you can crack jokes.

Eh - ive felt this way all along. Twitters most useful if youre an active mouthpiece already. Journos, celebs, etc. no real reason for your average joe to tweet or do anything else on it other than follow mouthpieces.

Bots will still exist, but it would be very difficult to get them verified. It's not just paying the $8. You also need to provide a government issued ID + other legal documentation.

I am pretty sure none of that is required to be “verified.”

Most people on Twitter aren't verified. It is commonly known and an open meme that verified accounts are fucking retards 9 times out of 10. If you have a checkmark, you are a dumbass.

This literally won't affect most people.

I do wonder how this will play out.

I don't tweet (unless someone is going to give me free shit for it), and I don't care about my social standing there. I only watch it for mild amusement (mainly Russian orcs meeting their maker).

Most people's tweets are just out into the ether as it is. No one cares about them. On one hand, I guess the illusion that it's 'fair' and that you have chance attracts people. On the other hand, the vast majority of people are going to be just as insignificant as before.

I really don't need Twitter. It's a place of extreme negativity and people get radicalised there.

It baffles me how Elon hasn't made this very simple and very obvious calculation:

Claim you're improving free speech = assholes post rancid shit = advertisers run a mile = collapse of social media platform.

...with a healthy side order of hypocrisy when that free speech takes the piss out of you.

Pretty sure that would have happened anyway, even if he said nothing, because he’s not bezos and on the wrong team

Yep, he has changed no rules on what is allowed to say on the platform. Why are all the boycotts and advertisers pulling out?

I always filter out non verified, conversations are more serious.

Also less kids, not many of them can steal their parents credit cards and keep a monthly charge unnoticed for long. All social media services should do this.

Activists harassing them and talking shit. It’s an old tactic used to hurt the revenue of people they don’t like. Basically 10 people message X company saying “so and so has a history of bigotry and we’re going to boycott you if you do business together.” The company either tucks tail or has their own diversity department and agrees.

Because there's people who think that because Elon saying "free speech from now on" means "oh yes! We get to say every racial slur, every ethnic slur, every religious slur, every -ism/-ist slur and we can't get cancelled for it!"

Usage of slurs on Twitter went up by a lot once Elon took over.

If advertisers don't want to be associated with a platform that allows all that... That's what happens. They leave. That's why most don't advertise on platforms like Gab or Parler ... They don't want to LOOK like the bad guy BECAUSE those sites and others allow those kinds of words and phrases. If you're an absolutist, own it and let everything run wild!

It's the dumbest thing ever for anyone to associate advertisements to user generated content. I believe this is a Bullshit excuse inorder for Advertisers to force their views and control the platform.
