Phil Spencer wants to revive iconic StarCraft series

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
Phil Spencer seems to want a lot of things.
Not as much as the guy that cares to talk about Phil and his green box more than his own favorite brand.

Who wants to bet a new StarCraft would be a new Moba or RTS/RPG not just a classic RTS.
If Company of Heroes 3 cant/doesnt succeed I have a bad feeling about AAA or even AA RTS games future.

RTS is a cooked genre.

The only way it coming back as a traditional RTS is if it's done by a relatively small team within Blizzard. We've seen way too many A and AA RTS games release over the last 10 years with little impact. Frankly, I doubt Blizzard would be interested.

The IP is way too interesting and fun not to pull it into the modern market via a genre change.

Does Blizzard still have any developers that can make a good RTS?

What used to be known as Team 1 (SC->WC3->SC2->Heroes) was disbanded few years ago. Some of the people made a new studio called Frost Giant Studios, others went to Mike Morhaime's new company.

How does the cost of a full remake compare to doing a new game? The original Starcraft with entirely new graphics, sound, UI assets - with the gameplay already designed and perfected..

Seems like a really bad idea. They already did a Remastered Edition that was pretty much exactly what the Brood War community wanted.

Maybe MS could send some checks to Blizzard and finally make Warcraft 3 Reforged what it was supposed to be...

I know, I know, wishful thinking...
For me I think Silent Hill is a great example of why you need to let things die. Appreciate and look to the past but stop trying to recreate it, the situation that gave birth to Citizen Kane will never be recreated.

Same with this, a lot of college nerds making what they want LED to A LOT of the 90s and early 00s gaming. It's just not going to happen, the staff who made it what it was are long gone and who's left clearly aren't interested so why force it?

The dude was asked a question. He answered it. You guys act like he just offered his opinion just to hear himself talk. Holy shit, GaF. Never change...lol
And i gave my opinion, i don't care whether you don't like it, i'm a fan of games, not a CEO or a brand like you.

I was super heavy into Starcraft back in the day.
Nowadays I just don't have the energy to devote to an RTS. I might play through a campaign. But I don't think I would go online against someone.
I do feel like this now but would love to get back into an RTS game. When I was playing WarCraft 2/3, consoles stopped existing for me LOL.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Pure breed RTS genre is niche as hell nowadays,
Thank that to the main focus on consoles and that it's horrible to adapt with a controller.

Microsoft tried with Halo Wars and it was a weak rts thanks to the design around a controller.

That's why I wouldn't want another Warcraft or DLC/Addon or extended story.
I wish they'd just deliver on what they promised with better cutscenes, better graphics etc.

Apparently you're not to apt in the reading department. I didn't say I liked the guy (though he seems all right for a CEO) I said he was asked a question, and answered it. Not just gave his opinion on the topic to hear himself speak.

Frankly, I'm indifferent to your opinion. No offense.

Then why quote my post, i'm for Starfield and i want the guy to release games quicker, don't you, Phil even admit's this himself for the last 5 years or so i've seen by posts on here, your acting all defensive and acting like a console warrior, which i have never been, PC only player

I think trying different genres for games would be good. The franchise can become big again, it just needs to get into good hands. I love starcraft so much that I would be happy with anything with real effort or behind it while not trying to change but adding to it's lore.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Phil doesn't control what Blizzard makes yet, your frustration is misplaced.

It really isn't that popular anymore. It has zero presence in today's discourse and its player base is probably very small as well.

And it's been 7 years since the last SC2 expansion came out, not to mention it might be another half a decade or more by the time a next prospective SC comes out owing to Blizzard's pacing.

Is this a joke? Starcraft is still one of the most played games. What is there to revive? It isn't dead.
No it's not, it was one of the most played games. Blizzard has abandoned StarCraft and won't even update StarCraft 2. Since 2020 Blizzard has stopped organizing WCS and instead entered into a 3 year deal with DreamHack. They don't even mention StarCraft as one of their IPs.
Meanwhile this is what ActiBliz think what is their best IP.
Across Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch, and Diablo, we are expanding our development teams so that we can accelerate the delivery of content in our pipeline, pursue new business models, broaden our communities, and delight our players.
They are soon going to kill StarCraft eSports, the IP is getting the same treatment as Heroes of the Storm.

The real problem they have is making Zerg appeal to more people (~33%).

They need to be a little more H.R.Giger and a little less venereal disease. Protoss and Terran are just about perfect.

oh I don't think it needs one, I wanted to know if remakes are cheaper and easier than new games. *Remasters* obviously are

On the one hand, I think Phil is lying and trying to get people to stop talking about Call of Duty and the potential of future MS hegemony. On the other hand, Microsoft has clearly figured out this RTS thing with AOE in a way nobody else has, so I could see it. AOE4 is mostly overlooked by normies but it really is a very good game. A StarCraft 3 would be pretty cool.
