Games with Gold for November 2022: Oof Edition

A shame they couldn't have extended the 360 program and offered some of the newer BC games like Binary Domain or Nier. I would have resubscribed for a bit to get digital copies of some of those newer games.

I can see the early 2023 press release now, “due to limited player base engagement with Games with Gold games. we are discontinuing the monthly games effective blah blah blah”

Should have kept the 360 games coming. At least they could be kept forever and were usually the highlight of the terrible offerings.

If they remove gold and keep the mandate for online play that means people have to pay a hell of a lot more a month to play online with no other options. It also removes the ability to get cheap GP. The backlash will be high
Its gonna be wild watching it unfold if it happens.

Fun fact: you can only get annual Gold subs from retailers. They removed annual subs for Gold from the console and their website. And somehow this flew completely under the radar.

Which means if you want to use the annual sub options you cant charge it to your credit card, you have to buy codes from retailers.

Add to that Game Pass never had an annual sub option and....yeah.....

But overall this is why I kept saying over the years why didnt MS just expand on Games with Gold vs doing a whole separate service with Game Pass.

Okay....needed to add this because...lol:

I just got some "annual" subs from CD Keys for Gold...and it was actually four 3 month codes.....wtf...

Was still a discount but did MS really get rid of all annual subs for Gold? Or was that a CD Keys thing? I had to get worldwide keys, normal USA codes were out of stock.

I don't see this as a bad thing at all.

You can get much cheaper discounts from retailers frequently. Hell, you can get 3 years of gold under $100 on CDKeys and other places.

As you're well aware, I didn't say that.
The point i was trying to make from the beginning was compared to competition (PS+), Xbox is not even trying to compete. Its like they're deliberately choosing the cheapest games or the oldest games for Games with Gold.

And i rarely hear an uproar about it.

They will probably just convert all gold members to gamepass ultimate for the duration of their time.

Everyone knows GwG is shit these days. Seems they're phasing it out.

They will either have to drop the mandate for online play, which I know they don’t want to because a lot of people will choose not to sub to any service if they aren’t forced and that is a huge loss in MRR or they will force people to pay a high price and casuals who just want to play cod online aren’t going to pay triple for GP.

Gold is also used to inflate GP numbers and without it the subs will drop in count. That’s will affect their stock directly.

Clearly The writing is on the wall for Gold but it’s not so simple to just drop it and force GP, something else has to change structurally.

Insult the paying user base? Oh yeah, fantastic strategy MS.
I doubt anyone is insulted. They are taking value away from Gold and are moving it to GP. Doing so will drive more people to GP and lessen the impact when they do pull the plug.

Any day now

I don't believe it. No way Xbox gives people free online when they get money from that and the fact that Gamepass is not growing like they thought. Unless the Gamepass price change is a huge price jump, no way they give that profit up.

Since this is from 2020, part of me wonders if Grubb was just confused on free-to-play not requiring Gold which was finally announced in April 2021.

I think it's inevitable. I expect this move to happen soon after the Acti-Blizz deal closes. They will roll everyone in GP and remove the paywall for online.

No they won't. Not only will you lose the people paying for online, but not GamePass, but your GP Ultimate sales will decline.

GP Ultimate is $180 a year, while GP without Gold, is $120. Not to mention once people already give MS their credit card info to play online, they are more likely to upgrade to a higher tier, than they are otherwise when what is free can be seen as "good enough".

I do think they will need to restructure the GP tiers to make this work, but I believe it is going to happen.

I'm kinda okay with that for now. Much better than having two shit tiers and the actual good tier.
Especially when the bad tier is the most expensive one. You don't need it, so save the money.

But, what sucks is, I WANT PS Premium to be good. I'll happily pay, if I can get access to quality PS1, PS2 and PSP games with enhancements and trophy support.

Same here, but for now I'm okay since I got it cheap for a year. When I actually have to pay then I'll be a lot more critical of premium.

I still don't believe it because online play is more popular than ever.

Let's say I'm a Gamepass subscriber and i don't like any games that's coming to Gamepass except Starfield and that's coming lets say holiday 2023 but i still have my online games like COD (that was purchased) and other online games that i can still play while waiting for Starfield so i keep Gold just for online play.

1. Why would i pay $20-25 or higher (After Gamepass price raise) a month when i can just wait until the month of Starfield's release when online is free? And Xbox gamers already have this mentality, thats why Gamepass Subs are lower than what Microsoft expected.

2. Why would Microsoft give up the profit from online when it does not benefit them?
