Capcom has released their Q2 FY22 financial results, and it shows off some big numbers for the Japanese developer and publisher. Unit sales for the March-September period reveal a giant 91.5% of gamers chose to purchase Capcom products digitally, compared to just 8.5% physical sales. This huge digital growth is attributed to the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak DLC and sales of catalog titles from Capcom’s expansive series.

So japan accounted for 5250 of the sales, and total physical units is 1800. So even if you make some unrealistic assumption about how much of those are japanese sales your still looking at digital taking over there aswell.

I wonder what will happen next gen. It is likely that there will be no disc drives in future consoles. So how do we physical bros get access to our old physical games then? Maybe you can send the discs to sony and microsoft and they convert it into digital licenses. Or both companies will sell a disc addon that you need attach to the console, to play your old physical games. In this regard, the future sucks.

Disk drive will be an add on, disks sold at a premium I reckon.

Your best bet is the rumour Sony is releasing an external optical drive for the similarly rumoured PS5 Pro. Or perhaps there's a way to have external PC 4k drives work (similar to how consoles can use USB drives or PS5 can use compatible SSDs). I dont know the nuances of PC optical drives working on console, but it seems storage can work.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Wow, that's crazy....physical is pretty much done. It's not even going to make sense to press disks soon.

Not really.

This huge digital growth is attributed to the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak DLC and sales of catalog titles from Capcom’s expansive serie

DLC is only available through online stores, older catalog titles sell primarily on online stores when physical releases can't be found in retail stores anymore. It's much more enlightening to know what the retail/online ratio is for new game releases, that's the real batlleground.

Is RE4 digital only? Or it will be physical too? If it has a physical release, the 2023 estimate is still at 90% digital.

Not surprised. Given Rise's port was PC only, this made Capcom's only new physical releases this year Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak for Switch, that comes with a digital voucher for Sunbreak, and (edit) Capcom Fighting Collection. RE Village Gold Edition tomorrow will be there only other physical release this year. Capcom Fighting Collection was also a weird one since it was already niche release but they released Capcom Arcade Stadium 2 the next month, which had several of the same games.

LOL.

And I thought digital was at about 75%. We've hit 90% and Capcom is a dev that has a good console base too. They are also predicting 90% next year.
Strange prediction on there part since there next year lineup isn't just primarily DLC and PC ports. I'm predicting low to mid 80% since RE4 remake is there biggest game for next year and will probably get decent physical sales on console (PS5 version already has large physical pre-orders). Mega Man BN Collection might get decent physical sales for the Switch version. SF6 and that dino game will probably be almost all digital on every platform though.

Remember when people were going crazy about the UK boxed charts? Making the craziest assumptions from seeing PS versions of games in the charts with 58 physical copies sold but no Xbox versions lol.

Physical is dead.

I went physical twice these last 5 years or so. RDR 2 and some backwards compatible Xbox game, can’t even remember which one.

Those numbers are manipulated and dirty.
Physical sales don’t go that deep.

I can buy any resident evil game on keysites for pennies,

On another note: EA just stopped selling physical copies of their games in germany.
If this trend continues to the point where I can`t buy physical anymore then I´m done with the console space where I´ve always just played SP games I bought and resold.

Because they sold mostly Monster Hunter add on and cheap games in the store.

The year Resident Evil 8 and Monster Hunter Stories 2 were released it was 30% of units, and what about revenue ? Probably even higher.

If they do suspend physical sales then they better be pressing these storage expansion makers to lower their prices.

Either way Capcom is hardly the company to make the entire industry ditch physical media in masses.

Yeah i still don't get why people are happy. I don't know about America but on day one retailers competition changes everything for me, 20 euros saved for every game and you can sell it, so fuck the digital store.

Yeah, it is important to look at more than unit numbers but also revenue numbers. Will be interesting to see the Sony numbers next week.
