HBO's House Of The Dragon (no book spoilers)

As timid as he was in the spotlight, he did not want to let his mother/Queen/Kingdom down. That was actually bravery and strength displayed.

Arrax was faster than Vhagar, but sadly being 5 times smaller and the storm getting intense, he lacked the strength to power through the heavy rain and wind. Which is why he was trying to climb above the storm, but it was already too late.

Looked like the main exit to the dragon pit was covered up by the temporary floor installed for the ceremony. Dragons can’t take the stairs.

Goddamn it, now I gotta watch the earlier eps in the Dragonpit to see if this would even make sense :p

Shouldn't Daemon be KING Daemon now? Folks still calling him Prince.
His title would actually be King-Consort, not King.

But it's not unusual for the husband of the Queen to take the name Prince either. Takethe real life example of Queen Elizabeth and her Husband. Philip wasn't King Philip. He was Prince Philip

GRRM calls him "Prince Daemon" throughout F&B so I guess it is some royal formality. I had just assumed it was because he was ALREADY a Prince and with the war and all, but if they call the wife of a King a Queen, why not the husband of a Queen? Is it just more "patriarchy" to prevent confusion that the dude next to the QUEEN doesn't have power, he's just arm candy, while the KING can easily bear having a Queen next to him due to inheritance and porgeny and whatnot? Or is it really Queen Regent and Queen Consort, but that just gets shortened to Queen? I get "Dowager Queen" means her King hubby is dead.

Great season. Daemon singing and walking in the dark was such an underrated scene it was great. Only gripes were some of the time jumps. It was far darker than GOT though with hardly any humor and I like that. Paddy Considine should win an Emmy. And Ramin Djawadi killed it as always.

I LOL at the "Aegon's prophecy" being so important when in GOT the writers were so bad, not only isn't the prophecy important, but the opposite turned out to be true. Based on the way D&D wanted it, if everyone ignored the threat beyond the wall, everyone would've lived happily ever after. Going beyond the wall is the only reason they got past it in the first place. I hope in season 2 they stop eluding to GOT.

lol yep. Did they not see the Night King episode? Arya, a Stark, kills the Night King and shes no Targaryan. Unless the prophecy was about Jon killing Dany which makes no sense since shes not the other worldly threat the prophecy hints at.

Fucking Vhagar bro. Fucking Queen of Beasts. Chewed through that little chicken Dragon like me eating a wing. Love that we get to see her. Aegon’s Conquest, and everything that went with it, has always been one of the most fascinating ASOIAF strands. Daemon’s like ‘yeah fam we got this, 14 dragons to 3’ well Vhagar is a fully armed supercarrier and you’ve got 14 inflatable dinghies.

Exactly. Definitely some patriarchy shit happening. But you're spot on. It's Queen Consort, but it gets shortened to just "queen" for brevity"

I liked the show overall. The time jumps were a bit jarring. They got some great performances out of these actors tho. Viserys and Daemon in particular.

So who is everyone's favorite character after this season?

Mine is definitely Aemond. He's a classic villain, perhaps a bit too moustache twirling, but he does it with such glee and so well. And he's such a bastard in service of his family. Yes, he's obviously still very sore about losing that eye, but he's so passionate in his cause because he believes in his mother's claim so strongly. I also get a kick out of how he clearly tries to emulate his more villainous, cunning uncle, but just comes off as a kind of cheap knock off of him.

Well, there is the rumored Jon Snow sequel series.......lol. Jon Snow vs the Night God aka the true threat???????

I don’t think Aemond showed me enough personality yet for me to have him as my favorite. I’d say definitely Daemon so far. I think he’s complex. He’s shown a dark evil side, but he’s also shown he’s not totally a dark heart and has compassion in him that comes out at times.

GRRM says The Winds Of Winter is maybe 3/4 Done.

Seeing as how the last book came out 12 years ago, that means the last 1/4 is going to take 4 more years.

2026 it is then.

but Viserys really came close along with Alicent and Cole. Corlys, Larys, and Otto were ok as well. I want to see more Aegon II's evolution.
Viserys GOAT. Daemon and Aemon are badass. Actually Daemon is a badass, Aemon is just being played by a guy who exudes charisma.

I've always liked the Otto actor. Good to see him get a meaty role finally. Both Rhynera actresses were excellent. The older Alicent actress is really good as well. At the start of the season, I said there arent that many likeable characters to root for, but they make it really hard to hate anyone as well. I read some articles that go into how the show diverges from the books and while i wont go into details in this thread, it seems some of the events were slightly altered to keep the characters from appearing full evil.

I sometimes wonder, if by some miracle this guy finishes TWoW and ADoS before he dies, is there gonna be a demand to adapt them into a show? You'd obviously have to recast the actors, but if the books come out and they're leagues, I'm talking leagues better than the show, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a ton of pressure on HBO to get them made.

Absolutely remarkable cinematography. Say what you will about GoT's insistence on using night scenes for their battle sequences, but the cinematography here is just sublime. Apparently they are using the UE5 tech they made for Mandalorian. I always liked that more than green screens which create these very fake lighting Halos around the main characters.

The second gif has a very video game over the shoulder cam. It's a shame no dev is even trying to do stuff like this. I believe we can come very close to these graphics using UE5. Hollywood is just so far ahead of the gaming industry at the moment. Really pushing both the TV and movie medium. Avatar 2 is going to blow minds too.

why is Vhagar reacting in pain here lol
and honestly, what was the point of this beyond "OH SO COOL"?! just a dumb event to provoke Vhagar to kill Arrax ugh

Aemond's reaction afterward is telling. he's actually distraught at what happened. he merely wanted an eye, so he has some sense of justice

oh, so dragon fire is special? it breaches their regular fire immunity?
Dragon's are not immune/impervious to dragonflame. As they get older the scales will thicken helping to protect, but they are not immune.

The fire hit her right in the face where the scales are thinner, and in her eye. That was supposed to be symbolic of Aemon and his eye. ;)

Dragonfire is depicted as MUCH hotter than any normal fire. So while Arrax might not be able to kill Vhagar with fire breath, I'm sure it stung a little at least. I believe virtually all "dragon on dragon" battles end with claw and bite damage though.
Also their hides might be tough but I imagine possibly taking a flame to the eye is going to make anything react that way

I will say, why poke the dragon here. You had gotten away, no need to come back.

Arrax didn't get away, too small and the storm was too great. Was winded so probably felt he needed a distraction or was in fight or flight mode, but flight was failing.

If there was no storm, Vhagar would have never caught up.

He was in the canyon, Giant Dragon couldn't get there. I think you find a place to perch down there.

Yeah that wouldve made more sense but what can I say, Dragons be stupid.
This reminded me of an incident I saw at the dog park a long time ago.

A nervous agressive little dog without a leash kept barking and harassing this well behaved rottweiler. The owner of the little rat ignored our warnings and eventually the rottweiler turned around and tore that little shit almost in half without an effort in one bite.

Go to the start of this thread and come back to this very page and seeing the amount of 180s does give you whiplash.
When it is good, it is good.

No one stays mad at a genre IP if the content actually delivers. This is why attacks against critics as being "racists, misogynists, -phobes of various ilks, etc" is such an off target deflection of the fact that the show itself sucks. I can still criticize the show for dumb casting choices that sabotage their own story but still enjoy the final product because it rises above its flaws.

House of Dragon straight up looks better than most 200-300 million budget movies. That last episode was especially stunning visually. A treat to watch on OLED with great speakers (Sonos arc/sub in my case). Well done HBO, but should’ve planned better to have season 2 come out next year.

The CG can be a bit hit or miss…the dragon fight in the finale was gorgeous, but other scenes where they’re mixing with live action look kinda janky. No doubt overall the cinematography, set, prop and costume design has been phenomenal though. With the exception of the night beach scene, the Dolby Vision has made everything pop and look awesome.

I've been holding off the last two episodes until I was truly free to enjoy them (unlike with another show).

Wow. Just wow. They hit all the right notes. I can't wait for the next season!

Yeah, the CGI in scenes where it was less important was a bit lacklustre, but they cheaped out on the right bits.

I'm curious how much of this show was in a completed state early enough to be obvious that this was gonna be at the very least a modest success, even if skepticism that it would COMPLETELY recapture GoT at its height is justified. I've a hard time thinking that any exec could watch the show, as we saw it, 4-6 months ago and think "yeah, better wait for some view reports before starting with season 2".

But maybe they were editing and getting SFX in till the very end, so a "Wait and see" attitude before committing hundreds of millions of dollars, especially with the shifting leadership of HBO/WB/Discovery/etc making such moves tricky, makes more sense.

I hope they do. And I hope they get Benioff and Weiss to do it lol.
