[VG Tech] Scorn Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S Frame Rate Comparison

Lunatic_Gamer

Gold Member

The version tested was 1.1.5.0.

Xbox Series X renders at a resolution of 2560x1440 and appears to use FSR 2 to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution.

Xbox Series S uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 1920x1080 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1280x720. Pixel counts at 1280x720 seem to be rare. Xbox Series S appears to be using Unreal Engine's temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution when rendering natively below this resolution.

Xbox Series X uses film grain and Xbox Series S does not.

Xbox Series X appears to be using an improved shadows setting compared to Xbox Series S which can be seen at 1:04.

Interesting findings. I’ve not tried this one out and don’t really have any desire to but is it doing anything interesting that would prevent it from reaching a higher resolution? 1440p is great but seems low for what looks like a linear puzzler.

native resolution seems low for both consoles , i am getting locked 60 fps at 1080p with my 9th gen corei5 and gtx 1660 super

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

The IQ in the game is very good, you could have fooled a lot of folks that it was native 4K.

FSR 2.0 really does work great if this is the expected output.

PS. The other thread was made first, I've asked mods to merge together.

Whelp I asked mods to merge, but they deleted my OP lol.

Anyway, the relevant news here is that Scorn is the first released console game to use FSR 2.0

I'm playing it on Series X but also tried PC version on 5700XT - it looks good but fucking DX12 shader cache stuttering is a mess and loading times are noticeably longer than on console.

I really hope for the sake of all PC gaming brethren that they look into fixing the shader cache stutters for UE5. It's become the bane of all PC UE4 games.

It could easily be 4k - 1440p on SX going by SS performance.

But that would be counter to the point of reconstruction like FSR 2.0 in the first place.

It's giving great results with up-sampling 1440p > 2160p. That was the dream, wasn't it ? Reconstruct from lower to 4K and give convincing results like native.

We need confirmation of the use of FRS. If not, I will continue to believe that it is another technique.

That said, whatever is being used, the result is very, very remarkable.

It's really horrible. What's the point od 144+ fps in PC gaming if there are freezes every few seconds/minutes.

FSR 2 is in PC version so why not.

It is.

Maybe FSR 2 has some overhead.

Looks good either way.

And think that FSR 2.0 is not free. It has a cost of 2 ms I think I remember in XSX, according to an AMD dev.

And that in XSS its cost was higher, which would respond to its not being used in it.

Anyway, better wait for official confirmation that FSR 2.0 is used

Yeah it's not free, for good results it requires at least a 5600 or 2060 equivalent GPU, though they said mileage may vary case by case.

Series S probably couldn't spare the extra grunt so they went with the built-in/cheaper Unreal Engine up-sampling.

there are games that use FSR 2.0 on PC and not on consoles...

VGTech has always been very reliable in the analysis of resolutions, but I am one of those who prefers to have official confirmation before drawing conclusions.

the game runs 1440p 120fps+ on my 3060ti with everything maxed out and max FOV

btw. if you want a higher FOV on console and have access to a PC, download the Microsoft Store version on PC and your FOV settings will be applied to both the Xbox and PC version through cross save. (the FOV slider is in the controls/camera menu)

framerate locks also get transferred, sadly it seems the game can not output anything above 60fps (maybe internally it does but it doesn't send more than 60fps to the screen)... but you can lock it to 30 of you're a masochist

If this is really FSR 2.0 then I hope more games start using it, because the game looks freaking crisp. Never feels like 1440p.

Weird to see framerate stats that show occasional drops. I assume I'm somewhere near the end of the game, but never felt a single frame drop.

There's barely any drops during game play (99.7%), the drops were registered during non-interactive "cut-scenes" I guess. Series S holds like a fucking champ tho.

We did merge the threads.

Only your original post from your thread was deleted since it was redundant information and identical to this OPs post and showed up back to back.

The game is very light on PC, the type of Game I would assume is an easy 1440p60 on series S. I'm shocked on how low the target resolution is.

The recommended GPU is a 2070, and based on the elememopee youtube channel's comparison, Series X is matching PC's "highest" equivalent settings. So probably that's why.

So much for the Series S to be "well engineered" and only sacrificing resolution.

Isn't this an indie studio? They don't have as much time\resources to make sure everything is properly optimized (not making excuses for the HW, but the studio may not have had the ability to pursue every options).

IDK how the game performs in later stages, but on my first hour I was getting easily over 60fps on a mere RTX 2060 6Gb MAX settings.

What's fair is to compare your lows againt XSX lows at both 1440p. Does the game drops under 60fps during gameplay and / or cutscenes?

On XSX the game seems to drops to ~50fps (sustained) in cutscenes and ~55fps drops (short) during gameplay.

The XSS has a near locked 60fps and appears to have better performance than the more powerful XSX for its resolution. Looks like the XSS is quite well engineered. It is a purely imagined narrative that the XSS would only have a resolution difference to the XSX. Keeping that in mind can you point to any substantive content differences between the games on both consoles?

Granted I didn't test for the whole game but actually I never dropped under 60, most of the time my fps hover in the low 70's.

Interesting results on XSX as i played at native 4k max settings at 60fps with a 1080ti.
I did have the odd drop into the 50's in some of the larger areas but it was 60fps the majority of the time.

Game is well optimized on PC. Around 110-115fps average on max settings @ 4K native on a 6800 XT & around 215-225fps @ 1440p. Similar to my 3090 system as well (slightly favors AMD cards).

I thought it was native 4K it’s crisp as hell and runs buttery smooth. (Though am using a LG CX and VRR)

Wish it had a photo-mode though as it’s a damn horrible looker of a game 😂

If FSR 2 can make games look this good, especially Unreal games then it’s a winner in my eyes. (I thought this was unreal 5 as it looked that good)

This right here is the same type of person that gets amazed for switch 480/720p ports
True, Guilty as charged. I love my Switch, and Just Yesterday I was amazed with the Nier Automata port.
I think I manage my expectations based on what I believe is achievable with the hardware. Let me take back my hot take, 1440p isn't that low, that's unfair, especially from a 60fps game. The thing is, I was expecting more, since my 2019 mid-range PC was able to match it. Maybe after playing more of the game, I realize that my GPU isn't capable of maintain the fps.

Games running at 720p or 900p with lowered details are common. If you had bothered reading this OP you'd know that scorn has worse shadows, many games have smaller texture sizes and if you had tried to play Elden Ring on a series S you would know how bad it can perform.

60fps at 720p on a "next gen"console it hot garbage in 2022.

Also, it was sold as a 1440p gaming device (something you would know had you red the box it originally shipped in).

When the PS5|SX are doing 1440p on games, its perfectly in line that SS does 1080p on those kinds of games ..
