NVIDIA DLSS 3 “Frame Generation” Lock Reportedly Bypassed, RTX 2070 Gets Double The Frames In Cyberpunk 2077

NVIDIA recently introduced its new DLSS 3 technology that adds a new feature known as Frame Generation on supported GPUs. The company officially said that this feature was only available on their new GeForce RTX 40 series cards but it looks like a Redditor has bypassed the lock & enabled it on an RTX 20 series graphics card.

DLSS 3 Lock Bypassed? Redditor Enables Frame Generation on GeForce RTX 2070 With A Simple Config File

The Redditor who goes by the username, JusDax, posted in the NVIDIA subreddit under a thread talking about new settings and features being added to Cyberpunk 2077. One of the upcoming features within Cyberpunk 2077 will be DLSS 3 which enables AI-Assisted frame generation that does wonders in boosting the frame rate.

The user says that he was able to bypass the DLSS 3 lock on older GeForce RTX cards by adding a config file to remove the VRAM overhead in Cyberpunk. He ran the game at 1440p with HDR off & DLSS set to balanced mode. He was also able to select the Frame Generation tab under the Ultra ray tracing preset.

DLSS Frame Generation doesn't seem to be hardware locked to RTX 40 series. I was able to bypass a software lock by adding a config file to remove the VRAM overhead in Cyberpunk. Doing this causes some instability and frame drops but I'm getting ~80 FPS on an RTX 2070 with the following settings:

2560x1440 res

HDR off

DLSS Balanced

DLSS Frame Generation ON

Ray Tracing Ultra preset

(I get ~35-40 FPS without Frame Generation and DLSS at Quality)

Without frame generation, his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 gets around 35-40 FPS but with DLSS 3 frame generation enabled, the user got 80 FPS. That's almost twice or a bigger performance jump. The user did use a different DLSS preset (Balanced) to test frame generation but still, switching from quality to balanced preset even in DLSS 2 won't net you a 2x gain.

I bet a tenner that the bolded is more severe than is being let on, its like Switch emulation:

"I get 180fps in Metroid Dread on my BTS 5090 Ti"

*watches their recorded video and the frametime graph is like the surface of the ocean during a tropical cyclone*

"Nah but I have a shader pack"
"How did you get it?"
"I performed every action in the whole game until it stopped stuttering"

Just play the whole game in a really annoying way first, then you can enjoy playing the game at a higher framerate guys, its simple stuff:

So all they did is edited a config file that enabled the option rather than greying it out, and then they just enabled it in the graphics options in cyberpunk?

That is extremely scummy from nvidia if true

There are no latency metrics provided. Would be funny if it runs the same as on ada. DLSS3 is the only reason why i want lovelace, looks like i am sticking with ampere for a long time.

Well Nvidia says it's hardware+software based. So sounds like this guy is only getting the software based performance boost. Which looks like it's still 2x
Sure but I take leaks with a grain of salt. I'll reserve my judgment for when/if channels like Gamers Nexus and the like do actual testing. For all we know the tech may work with older cards but have negative effects outside of more fps.

Is it good news if one of the leading GPU manufactures was caught twisting the truth about it's hotly anticipated technology not being possible on older hardware?
This is similar as with DLSS 2 and FSR 2. It apparently can be done at worse quality or/and performance. AMD will probably do that.

Oooo baby this is interesting, I wasn't going to upgrade but I was a bit disappointed the feature wouldn't come to my 3080

Nvidia did say that dlss3.0 frame generation is possible on 3000 cards but at less quality/performance.

They probably want reviewers to test dlss3 on 4000 series then later on it will allow on 3000 series but with no guarantee on frame generation quality/performance.

If true, called it lol.

I only half-believe that DLSS 3 is only doable on 4000 series cards. While it's plausible that the 3000 series cards don't have sufficient hardware to run it, Nvidia has enough of a money grubbing record for me to think that perhaps they are gatekeeping this to boost demand. In this particular area, I don't trust them enough to think that it's not just marketing.

Nvidia are dirty bastards but Where's the competition? That's why they get away with it.
I hope AMD and Intel make significant strides in their next generation of cards.

I wonder if anyone can implement more things like this and I also wonder why more developers haven't pursued it recently:

When I see DLSS 3, I think back to that thread of that guy who turned on motion interpolation on his TV.

I also think of this too:

Before anyone gets excited, the guy on Reddit said that he had visual problems though. Frame rate alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Of course click bait farms won’t tell you that because it’s easy traffic to be mad at Nvidia.

To be seen.

Totally off topic but do you know of a way to play metroid prime 2 on an emulator without stutter? Really wanna finish it but the stuttering kills me.

It’s interpolation and adds lag. I would just prefer to play at 30 fps.
If it’s hacked on 3080 I will check it out
We need to see how much lag the older cards get compared to the 4000 series.

But in the 4000s its well worth it it seems as it increases image smoothness dramatically while only introducing minor latency.
