Better two year launch line up, PS4 or PS5?

Which have you preferred so far PS4 or PS5’s first two years?

Ico alone shits on the PS4 and PS5 gens combined considering how many devs love it/were inspired by it for their own works

I think all 3 of those games are pretty significant releases for me, but it just goes to show how much playstation has always relied on major 3rd party releases to pad its line up. Even if those games were exclusive at the time, we don't suddenly view console 3rd party exclusives the same way anymore.

to a lot of us growing up back then Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, DMC, And GTA, etc. might as well have been playstation first party games. Now theres a negative connotation to major 3rd party exclusives.

In general, PlayStation 5 easily.

For me personally, also PlayStation 5 easily.

My PlayStation 5 completed games -
1. Marvel's Spider Man: Miles Morales - 9.0/10
2. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - 9.0/10
3. Horizon II: Forbidden West - 9.0/10
4. God of War Ragnarok - 9.0/10 minimum is my expectation

My PlayStation 4 completed games -
1. Knack - 6.0/10
2. Infamous: First Light - 7.0/10
3. The Order: 1886 - 7.0/10
4. Until Dawn - 7.0/10

Overall, PlayStation 5 slaughters PlayStation 4 for me and it's not even close.

PS4 First two Years
  1. The Playroom
  2. Killzone Shadowfall
  3. Infamous Second Son + First Light
  4. Knack
  5. Driveclub
  6. Until Dawn
  7. The Order 1886
  8. Bloodborne

PS5 First two Years

  1. Demon’s Souls
  2. Astro’s Playroom
  3. Destruction All-Stars
  4. Returnal + Acension
  5. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
  6. The Last of Us Part 1
Better list.

PS4 by a long shot.
Astro's Playroom >>>> Playroom
Returnal > Blodborne
Knack > Ratchet & Clank
Destruction All Stars = Driveclub
TLOU > The Order
Infamous ~ Demon's Souls

Killzone < Killzone
Until Dawn > All

PS4 wins because of Until Dawn - but only just.

I wouldnt compare BB and The Order with remakes that were basically asset upgrades. If they were full on remakes like RE2 then maybe, but both DS and TLOU are essentially running the same code under the hood with the same dated game design.

Astro is better than Playroom, Returnal is better than KZ and Ratchet is better than Knack. But they literally have nothing to replace Infamous, Until Dawn, DriveClub, The Order and Bloodborne. Not all games were great, but they were great visual next gen showpieces. So far its only been Ratchet and maybe Demon Souls.
Crossgen I know but nearly every AAA PS exclusive this gen so far looks outstanding

Ps5 and its not really close. Demons souls, GOW, HFW, Returnal, GT7, SM MM, ratchet and clank, TLOU. This is probably the best 2 year start that i can remember. I have been playing since NES for reference.

Going back to what I mentioned earlier, it becomes all the more impressive when we realize that all of that was supposed to be the 1 year start of the PS5 gen. It just goes to show how densely packed they wanted their lineup to be right out the gate until the pandemic smashed everything apart.

It actually becomes even more impressive when we factor in that this would be coming off the incredible 2020 they had. I can only imagine what the 2022 lineup was supposed to be like. I'm guessing it would've included FF16, Spider-Man 2, Forspoken (although this could've been 2021), the entire PSVR2 lineup, TLOU Part 1 and TLOU MP, amongst others.

PS5 has the better lineup of games, but it’s loaded with cross gen games.

Two other takeaways…

Resogun is labeled as cross Gen, but it debuted as a PS4 game with a PS3 port appearing later.

Demons Souls while not cross gen, is a remake of an old game.

These list are between the ps4 and ps5 launch titles, late ports and 3rd party exclusives are excluded. Bolded are cross-gen releases.

  • Resogun
  • Infamous Second Son + First Light
  • Knack
  • MLB The Show 14’
  • Entwined
  • Driveclub
  • Little Big Planet 3
  • Helldivers
  • Tearaway
  • Until Dawn
  • The Order 1886
  • Bloodborne
  • MLB The Show 15’

PS5 First two Years

  • Spider-Man Miles Morales
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Sackboy A Big Adventure
  • Destruction All-Stars
  • MLB The Show 21’
  • Returnal + Acension
  • Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • The Last of Us Part I
  • MLB The Show 22’
  • God of War Ragnarok
PS4 was better due to having more variety. PS5 wasn't that good in 2021.

Also, you're missing quite a few on your list:
PS4:
Doki-Doki Universe
Killzone: Shadow Fall Intercept (standalone)
Hohokum
CounterSpy
SingStar
The Last of Us: Left Behind (standalone)

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
Driveclub Bikes (standalone)
Fat Princess Adventures
Guns Up!

PS5:
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends (standalone)

PS4 sucked those first 2 years, PS5 clear winner here.

I remember only playing Black flag, AC unity and FIFA those days, there wasnt anything worth buying from first party. People were jerking themselves over fking resogun lol

Comparing the lists, ps5 has better two year games but so much of what made the ps4 list acceptable/ exciting was that the games listed were ONLY playable on ps4 and truly were next gen looking at the time.
PS4 was more exciting.
PS5 is not very exciting when 95% of that list is playable elsewhere, including the PS4.

PS5 and it isn't even close. If it wasn't for Bloodborne it wouldn't even be worth comparing the first two years of each console. Demon's Souls, Returnal and Astrobot alone made it worth investing into the 1st year of the PS5.

This year PlayStation has given us no less than 3 *monster* 1st party exclusives (HFW, GT7, GoW), a remake of one of the greatest games of all-time (TLoU) and a bunch of great 2nd party/console exclusives/indies (Ghostwire, Inscryption, Cult of the Lamb, Stray and more) but people still find things to complain about.

PS5 wins easily imo

I loved The Order 1886, Until Dawn and Bloodborne but PS5 has more quality games that I love

Adding some actual data for context. Here's what we got in 2020 for PlayStation first party and console exclusive games (timed or otherwise):

Ghost of Tsushima
Final Fantasy VII Remake
The Last of Us Part 2
Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales
Nioh 2
The Pathless
Godfall
Demon's Souls
Dreams
Sackboy A Big Adventure
MLB The Show 20
Astro's Playroom
Paper Beast
Granblue Fantasy Versus
Bugsnax
Iron Man VR
Predator Hunting Grounds
Fall Guys
Genshin Impact
Spelunky 2

Here's what was originally planned for 2021 before the pandemic caused delays:

Returnal
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart
Destruction All-Stars
Horizon Forbidden West
Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade
God of War Ragnarok
Gran Turismo 7
Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
Death Stranding Director's Cut
Kena Bridge of Spirits
MLB The Show 21
Deathloop
Chicory A Colorful Tale
Guilty Gear Strive
Jett The Far Shore

Combined with the launch games, the PS5 would've had an INCREDIBLY strong first 12 month period.

Now imagine what 2022 could have looked like coming off of that sort of momentum.

In terms of proportion of games that looked like they couldn't run on last gen hardware, PS4 wins by a country mile IMO.

Why the cherry picked list OP?
My choice is PS4 and cross gen games shouldn't be counted which makes PS5's lineup even more anemic.

Had they did the port earlier would it have been a lesser game?

PS4 early years were brutal. Literally the only great game was Bloodborne.

PS5 already had demon's souls and spiderman day 1 and then had ratchet, returnal, horizon.

Leaps and bounds better

In terms of number of good 1st party games it’s PS5, no doubt. Demon’s Souls alone quenched that next gen graphics thirst day one of launch.

PS4 had Bloodborne though, which could be considered the single best game in any of the consoles 2-year line ups. But it took 1,5 years to get there.

Overall I’ve definitely spent way more time and money on first party games this gen compared to the PS4. I’ve also had more enjoyment of my PS4 library that support higher resolutions and fps, much better than having no BC at all on PS4. You pretty much had the 1-2 games you got with the console and that was it.

I remember playing more GT6 on PS3 the year post PS4-launch than playing my PS4. That says something. I rather have this crossgen approach than nothing at all.

But those games weren’t very good or memorable
Sure but if we're just going to have a PS5 launch with "good games" that do run on PS4 (or look like they could) what's the point of there even being a PS5? Besides, you never stipulated in your thread that the individual games had to be "good" so I'm interpreting it as the overall feel of the launch.

In that sense I think they were both shit but PS4 was less shit.

I mean, is that not kind of a given?? What does feel of a launch mean?

Don't forget, portion of ps5 list that are ps3 remakes 2/6. PS4? 0/8. Also worth noting of the remaining 4 that are left for ps5 only 2/4 are AAA and 1/2 of that 2/4 is getting a pc port soon.

I whole heartedly disagree

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart
Demon Souls
Horizon Forbidden West
TLOU remake

The argument can be made for Returnal with its particle effects and it's hybrid GI approach

Games will look better later this gen possibly starting next year but these games look better than 99.9% of last gen's games

I remember PS4 first two years more fondly but that wasn't because of exclusives, or first party games. On PS4 we got Battlefield 4, and on PS5 Battlefield 2042... So hum, yeah, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

But looking at that list, yeah PS5 without a shadow of a doubt.
