PlayStation to broaden line-up, but won’t abandon roots, studio chief says

More cross-gen titles could come (case by case) - “We certainly don’t want to forget the millions of active players on PS4, and we want to ensure there are great games for them as well,”
Yeah, like MLB and PS1/PSP classics. I'll say it now, don't expect anything relevant for PS4 in 2023.
Imagine if when the ps2 released they would refused to abandon the 100million ps1's and kept making cross gen games... and the same with ps3 and the 150million ps2's
It was actually much worse, they were releasing EXCLUSIVE games for the previous systems after the next ones came out. Remember Syphon Filter 3, God of War 2 and Gran Turismo 6?

Sounds like cross-gen the entire way through :messenger_hushed:

At this point I think we'd all be better off to expect cross-gen games to carry us through the entire PS5 life cycle. Can't wait for Horizon Peculiar South on the PS4...
I hope that atleast Xbox doesn't go this way. Judging by Starfield, I think they are on the right track.

Talk is cheap. If you truly want to broaden up Pay attention to your japanese first party games. Release them on PC. Remaster them/patch them up for PS5. You can only play western open world third person games for so long.

Also, take a look at your backcatalog. Way too much focus on the ps4 (2016 and onwards) while IPs from prior generations are being forgotten.

More cross Gen games … like there are not enough words in the world to cuss this bitch and his shit boss Jimshit.
Buying next Gen console is useless . They should just call it PlayStation 4 pro 2 and not PlayStation 5 .

What a fucking waste.

More ps4 games means there is zero logic to upgrade next Gen video cards too. If the games are still based on ps4 , even if you go high texture and 4K native , your 3080 is more than enough.

Talk about shitty standards as industry

I hope MS sticks to its plan and stop releasing Xbox one games . Their first party games will shit on Sony games graphics wise and tear Sony to parts till these 2 bitches get fired and locked in jail for stupidity
Forget the GPUs. Cerny spent a half an hour shoving IO and SSD nonsense down our throat. I thought that was supposed to be the next big leap.

Then there is the CPU. It is insane how they are holding themselves back to CPUs that arent even as powerful as the cell was in 2006. What we are seeing here is a complete breakdown of industry standards. A bastardization of this industry by a bunch of greedy lying suits and some of the most complacent devs in the history of this medium. I wouldve expected mass resignations especially from people up at the top who are supposed to be these visionary minds that dream about working on a the latest and greatest. But even they have turned into indie devs who are ok with developing PS3 era games with PS4 era graphics.

The industry is going to crash. Just a matter of when. The hardcore are more antsy than ever. I see a new thread about how this gen sucks every other day on this board. And when the hardcore check out, it's over. The casuals alone wont keep this industry afloat. The hardcore set the trends and the casuals follow. Going after people who waited until 2020 to buy Playstation 4 for $199 is ridiculous because they dont spend money on day one $60 games let alone $70. Holding back developers, shafting day one buyers all to appease a bunch of cheapos who couldnt be bothered to buy consoles day one is beyond ridiculous.

Sorry bro. This isn't the early-mid 2000s. The casuals (majority) now carry us (the hardcore). Stupid money is spent on anything aka Mobile Gaming making more money than anything else. This is why games are so degenerative and passive these days. It all started with Horse Armor the gen prior and Fortnite last gen wonder, next gen still hasn't arrived and thank fuck I'm out of consoles.

Your right about the SSD and how they made out it would change how games are designed and how they were not limited because of that.

Now more cross gen so they design gakes to utilise the SSD because they have to factor in the limitations of HHD loading and streaming speeds. Pretty poor from sony and all about greed

At least Apple has the balls to cut of old ass hardware at some point.
PS4 came out in Nov 2013! Let it go.
And say fuck you to 120 mil. PS4 gamers who cant buy a PS5 cause Sony cant produce enough? There will be enough PS5 only games and some PS4- PS5 games. I dont have a PS4 anymore and i love how the games like the Horizon games and other Sony and second and third party games looking and playing on my PS5.
A friend of me has a PS4, and even he can cleary see the difference of games between the PS4 and PS5...
So whats your problem?

I had a Series X for a while and was bored. I was hoping to get a PS5 and thought I might feel different but with today's news I won't. And deep down, the problem on either console is what you said above. There is no "spark" for want of a better word in this current gaming era.

Nah. I've long said Sony should shift to GAAS swings and safe bet single player bunts. Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst reached the same conclusion I did. The 3 amigos...

The big budget 3 million sellers never made sense after the GAAS era arrived. The Spidermans, God of Wars, and Horizons were never in danger.

That being said, how do you think this budget split is going to look in 2027? If they're doing this with 0 multiplayer hits, what are they going to do when they have 2 or 3 multiplayer hits?

Keep smoking dat reefer, fam.

Their live service expansion will effect their single player offerings. I mean, naughty dog of all studios is making a multiplayer only game. That's not a good sign of things to come. It feels like gaming as we know it, is coming to an end. Sony were like the last ones to focus on high quality single player games. Now they are obsessed with live service like all the other western publishers. This is bad.

there was lots of concern when gamepass was created that it would all just be GAAS from Playstation fans wasn't there. now its cool to have GAAS

I thought PlayStation heads have stated they're going to be expanding to add more GAAS games a while ago. It's nothing new.

The acquisition of Bungie is that commitment to expand in that direction.

Sony left 125+million PS2 users in the dust for the PS3.

I bought a next gen console that has next to no next gen games available for it. As a customer , why should I care about people who have not bought a PS5 yet? Doesn't make sense. Owning a PS5 is not a social necessity its a luxury item and I want it to be supported by Sony.

They claim these pc ports allow them invest more in to sp games, if so where are they then. What a load crap, if the live service games take off, we are going to see less and less sp games , I really hate this new Sony, if u want growth, they should focus and invest in the ps plus extra service.
Why do you think these live service games are happening to begin with?

At least Apple has the balls to cut of old ass hardware at some point.

Look, Sony used to position itself as a "Premium" brand like Apple. Sony VAIO laptops, Sony Experia Phones, PS3, PSP, and Vita, all of these were innovative, high-quality, EXPENSIVE products. And they all failed. Sony almost went bankrupt over this, along with their overextended movie division.

The PS4 saved Sony; a console that was made using the same x86-64 AMD chips that everyone else uses. Not some fancy expensive, exclusive magic shit, just the parts that every other PC uses. Not only that, they doubled down on being the biggest supplier of camera sensors for phones, not hoarding the technology for themselves, and now supplies cameras for half of all smartphones.

The new Sony is built on the principle of innovation AND accessibility. That is what pulled Sony out of its death spiral. This new focus on PC as a secondary platform is just an extension of that philosophy. I guarantee these ideas come from the top and flow down. Jim Ryan is a Sony lifer and understands Kaz Hirai and Kenichiro Yoshida's new vision. I'll end off by saying that NO ONE but Apple can act like Apple.

There'll be trolling/concern posts for anything bro. Just don't pay attention to it. We knew GamePass wouldn't just be GAAS titles. It's fantastic value for those who want full access to Xbox library at low cost and I've subscribed to the service before so I can speak of that experience. Don't feed the trolls. Fuck 'em (obviously not literally lol)

Cross gen games will always make me rage. It made me rage this morning reading Hermans interview and it will make me rage tomorrow, the week after and so on and so on. Until the day they stop cross gen support I'll be a miserable fuck that's for sure.

Of course no one did. These journalists have no balls and ask the same derivative questions over and over.
I believe during these interviews there is a PR person near by and these “journalists” are only allowed to ask certain questions.

At least from my understanding.

I remember people complaining that sony only made over the shoulder, sad dad cinematic movie games.

Whats the issue now? Sony expanding to multiplayer games seems like a natural progression now that their studios have become a well oiled machine in terms of cranking out good single player.

Bungie acquisition was vital for a smooth expansion. naysayers won’t be able to hold it over sonys head anymore that they don’t offer enough variety

On top of the big single player games now they got car combat games, FPS, horror games, japanese games, platformers, vr, and who knows what else is cookin

Holding back developers, shafting day one buyers all to appease a bunch of cheapos who couldnt be bothered to buy consoles day one is beyond ridiculous.

What's even more concerning for me is that the industry as a whole is increasingly pandering towards the cheapos. Pretty soon the industry won't be able to sustain itself, the negative feedback loop has already begun. The race to the bottom has already started and most people haven't even realised it yet.

I really dont know why. A year ago I went and found sales split for all the cross gen games last gen. Watch Dogs, MGSV, Destiny and it went from 65% in Watch Dogs which released 6 months after launch to 75% for destiny and 95%!!! for MGS5 a year and a half after launch. here we have already seen numbers for HFW that are 70% PS5 and thats a game that had a cheaper $60 version with a free PS5 upgrade. So in reality its probably 80-85% already.

The Miles sales shouldve been their light bulb moment. It continued to chart month after month every time PS5 came back in stock despite being available to 120 million PS4 owners on last gen consoles. People just want to buy games on their fancy new consoles.

Last gen, they showed a study about how the cheapos (late adopters) spend $700 over the course of a gen compared to $1,700 early adapter spend. And yet they are going after the audience that doesnt spend money???? Why?

Its clear they dont look at numbers. They just see 120 million PS4 consoles sold and think ALL consumers are the same. No they are not. And the PC market? It is clearly not what they think 200 million steam users will buy their games in droves and yet GOW sold less than a million, days gone made a total of $22 million and HZD made $60 million after selling 2.5 million copies. Clearly the steam userbase didnt buy it at full price or it wouldve been over $125 million.

I dont know if I agree with that assertion. The PS3 yes they tried to position as a premium device but PS1 and especially the PS2 were developed for the $300 price point. Sony famously announced the $299 price by having an exec go up on stage just to say $299 and walk off. PS2 was roundly shat on by Xbox and Nintendo fans for being way weaker than its competition. Even the Dreamcast was almost as powerful as the PS2. But Sony always aimed for $299 until they lost their minds with the PS3.

PS4 was built on the principle of FOR THE GAMERS. Everyone knows about that conference and how they purposefully positioned themselves to be pro consumer, and pro hardcore gamer by not focusing on kinect and tv tv tv. They showed up with stunning looking exclusives at E3 and did not bother talking about cross gen or GaaS or kinect or PC. It was about PS4 gamers and no one else. People who paid $400 for their console. It is their OBLIGATION to focus on them and not on PC gamer who paid $0 towards their console or $0 towards PSN. An obligation they have abandoned.

Reads more like a warning to the player base.

Prepare for more cross-gen and a shift in focus to live service.

Clearly the steam userbase didnt buy it at full price or it wouldve been over $125 million.

It's a combination of greed and chasing customers that don't exist. A prime example I'll give of this is the original Crysis. Contrary to popular belief, the first crysis was a profitable venture for Crytek (it's actually one of the top selling PC games of all time) and became so quite quickly. It was also responsible for a huge renaissance in PC gaming at the time, it got a ton of people building PC's for the first time, created a hardware arms race that benefitted everyone (as AMD and Nvidia competed for the cheapest way to run the game) and caused a surge in growth for the platform not seen since Half Life 2.

So what did they do? Instead of continuing in the original direction for Crysis 2 (bleeding edge, PC only), they saw the amount of money in console gaming at the time (COD, Halo, etc) and chased that market instead, they wanted it all. In the process they abandoned the market and audience that got them to that position in the first place and dumbed down the game (gameplay, mechanically and the environent/graphics) in order for it to suit consoles and what they perceived to be "console players" (checkpoints, dumbed down AI, dumbed down suit mechanics, HUD everywhere etc). The rest is history. You can see their CEO's bullshit excuses and spiel here:

Someone posted some chart in the Microsoft/Activision thread and it showed how console gaming has barely grown in the last decade and people were blaming Sony for that being the case (funny that, considering Microsoft and Nintendo have also been involved in the very same industry for that time period). The whole idea that there's this whole massive untapped market for the console gaming industry to go after is a laughable one.

The industry is mature. What happens when industries mature? They reach saturation and stagnate (or even shrink at a slowing rate) from a consumer acquisition perspective. This is normal, but yet there are people talking about this as if it's an outrage. I suspect the people in charge of Playstation and Xbox also think the same way and it will ultimately be to our detriment.

The pie in the sky is having all these games they are making playable across every device possible. It's delusional. Different devices suit different types of game. A game that attempts to please everyone pleases nobody, these are very personal experiences (much like with any form of entertainment) and it's always apparent when something is created without passion. People who want the types of gaming experiences typically associated with home consoles already own a home console (or at the very least a PC because there is now a lot of crossover and has been for the last 2 generations albeit at the expense of traditional PC gaming experiences - but that's another subject entirely). There is also nothing wrong with for example a mobile gamer who wants to play console/PC games needing to feel the need to want to buy one of those devices and setting that as a target for themselves. The moment you stop making experiences 100% tailored to the original audience is the moment you alienate and lose them. It's like they are too besotted with the idea of unlimited riches to understand this.

So here's what will happen - games will start to be made with mobile/portable controls in mind. We will also start to see games being made (or at worse, built around) the idea of cloud gaming. We will also see the negative feedback loop really take hold in the AAA/AA space - whereby less gamers are spending money on games overall, which leads to less revenue entering the industry, which leads to less innovation/risks being taken, which leads to less gamers seeing value in purchasing said games, rinse & repeat.

Other than the odd new game I'm willing to pay for I'll mostly just sit here cosy with my backlog until things eventually sort themselves out. I won't be missing much in the meantime.

This is the kind of thing that Xbox One got roasted for when in reality all MS was doing was promoting other features. Just because they promoted plugging in an HDMI to run cable tv through Xbox and do NFL polls on Sunday afternoon doesn't mean they were abandoning gaming. MS actually did hardly any Kinect V2 stuff on Xbox One. But people grilled them for it and Sony sat back doing that YT video while Spencer or Don Mattrick were putting out flames doing Q&A.

The same can now be seen with PS. Sony is surely still making SP games, just like MS was still going to have games for One. Spiderman 2 and Wolverine are coming out and they already got sequels of GOW, Horizon and GT released (or just about to), and also R&C and DS too. But their marketing lately makes it seem like they arent doing any SP games and all they care about is GAAS and PC and PSVR2 (with no BC) or buying up small studios to make GAAS or PC ports. Its the same thing now with pissed gamers, Hermen Hulst doing Q&A. And all MS does lately is sit back and issue out Game Pass news.
