NPD August 2022: 5% Decline in SW, Double Digit growth in HW Rev. PS5 #1 in Unit and Revenue and Spider-man back at #3

Sony haven’t even started showing or releasing big next gen titles yet. They are currently in the same place as xbox they just haven’t announced their next line up of games outside of spider-man 2, which is btw a bigger game than god of war is
Sony's big next gen roadmap of games is going to look so good I can't wait to see Wolverine, Ghost of Tsushima 2, etc

Come one now, this is just pure delusion. How is it going to be more of an uphill battle? The gen is just getting started and MS hasn't even started dropping their heavy hitters. This is literally the best it's going to get for Sony, as next year MS has a stacked lineup and The Activision deal is going to close.

It's pure delusion to think this is the best it's going to get for Sony.

I say uphill battle for MS, XBox.

They say the best its gonna get for Sony.

Yet according to them I'm delusional....

An uphill battle doesnt mean its over. Its just that....an uphill battle. I absolutely agree it will be better for MS starting next year....but that doesn't mean it gets worse for Sony by default. Sony will too get better.

All that remains now is how much the gap widens or shrinks until next gen.

And its kinda telling how acquisitions keep getting bought up. Again, when all else fails, fall back to acquisitions I guess.

Yeah, haha they were absolutely on crack back then. Man they said some absolute gold!

None of them are innocent of this. Sony were ridiculous in 2005 and 2006. They really did think they were too big to fail. Reality slapped them in face and they learned their lesson well, as did Microsoft. Look at difference from the kinect and early xbox one period to now.

MS will STILL be behind Sony and Nintendo even after this purchase. It's ok for Sony to buy publishers and developers, but it's not ok for MS?

It isn't the same at all! Name me some big multiplat ips that sony have acquired. There's destiny, but sony will let bungie carry on the way they are. What else is there?

Now name the ones Microsoft have acquired. You know it isn't the same. Stop acting like it is.

Xbox without exclusives in 2022 will find it difficult to compete for 1st place. Microsoft really need exclusives for 2023.
They have a good few annoucned, but next year the other platforms have huge titles too. Nintendo with Zelda and Playstation with Spiderman 2. Im sure all 3 platforms will have more than what they’ve announced

yea, you're right Sony is just gonna lay there motionless and let it all happen and stop releasing games. Oh, and yea, the console is super easy to get and is in every store now (right?)

2022 is their best chance to create a lead over Xbox. It's going to be incredibly tough for Sony to create the lead that some Sony fans on here fantasize about with the lineup Xbox has for 2023 onwards.

Of course PS5 will continue to sell well, but Sony can't do anything to stop people from buying Xboxes as their primary or secondary consoles.

Acquisitions keep getting brought up because acquisitions are happening and will have a big effect on the console market. It's just reality, and whether people want to call it cheating or whatever, these acquisitions are going to put MS and Xbox in a very good position. The acquisitions Sony made over the years are what helped them get into the position they're in now, the acquisitions MS made over the last few years are what's giving Xbox an incredible lineup in 2023 onwards, and the Activision acquisition is what's really going to cement their place as a leader in the gaming industry.
I believe it was you that said Sony wasnt taking advantage of the stock situation a few months ago.

Welp.

I remember ppl saying:

Series S and Game Pass is why Sony is lagging behind in sales.

Now we have 2 months in a row where the $299 Series S is ... getting outsold vs 2 consoles from Sony that are more expensive. AFAIK....the split favors Series S vs Series X.

That is by definition an uphill battle.
They weren't and they still aren't because of stock issues. We're coming from a gen where Sony had more than a 2 to 1 lead over Xbox to a gen where they're nowhere near that. I think Sony would agree that they haven't been able to take advantage of their momentum from the PS4 gen.

Because they can't stop Xbox from releasing exclusives....

Exclusives are part of the equation, they actually have to be good. You don’t make waves dropping some games that score 73-83 metacritic, sony and nintendo games blew up cause they have a few franchises that are guaranteed 90+ scores on metacritic, and a lot more that are guaranteed 85+

True, MS has Starfield which is guaranteed to be one of the biggest releases of the year, Forza which is almost guaranteed to be in that 90MC range, and Redfall which will have that Arkane magic. And that's just for the first half of the year. Again, I'm not saying that Sony isn't going to continue to do well, but Xbox is also going to do very well and keep those console sale numbers very competitive. It's telling that Xboxes are still selling well even in this very dry year.

He was wrong on many levels. Consoles did not reach 400M and even if we say very generously that GP/xcloud is currently at 100M subs it's still nowhere near 1B.

Last gen consoles not collectively reaching 400M as he predicted is not the point. The point was to address the ridiculous claim/lie that Microsoft actually suggested they would sell 1 billion Xbox One consoles. That never actually took place. "Journalists" horribly misquoted a Microsoft exec who was speaking about the entire games industry as a whole outside of consoles.

360, PS3 and Wii actually did come very close to that 300 million mark, so that's where his prediction the next consoles would all reach 400m together came from. And then he cited moving beyond consoles, meaning PC, mobile devices, cloud. That's where the potential billion comes in. He was never talking about xbox one gen consoles selling anywhere near such figures.

At the time he made those comments around may 2013 nobody yet knew Xbox was going to start releasing first party games on PC day and date with the console versions. None of the big 3 were doing that. Only 3rd party publishers were. Nobody knew streaming would become so prominent or that Game Pass was coming, and how that would reach into so many different potential devices, actually bringing with it next gen new console games - a lot of them - in a way that removes console and physical PC hardware barriers more than most expected. Between cloud streaming, mobile gaming, PC gaming and consoles we can safely say the 1 billion collective reach for the industry is well within reach, if not surpassed. Even Playstation is transitioning to PC also, and they have their own cloud streaming. More and more game streaming services have also come online in the last few years also.

Yep, this is good news. A successful PS5 and Xbox is what we all want to see.

Just the way I like it. Pressure needs to be applied all over the place. I don't want Xbox running away with anything, I don't want Playstation running away with anything. I just want blows being traded, haymaker from Sony, haymaker from Microsoft. When either side is genuinely concerned about the other that's great for my gaming habit lol.

Yeah I've mentioned that but as I said even his 1 Billion was wrong too. Even taking into account mobile streaming and PC. He was just overly optimistic in general. He thought those things would be a runaway success in a decade. His prediction was in 2013 and we are near 2023 so it's become clear he was wrong about it all even if you were to include those things.

"Microsoft's senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi has stated that given the broad multimedia focus of Xbox One, there's no reason why it can't shift between 400 million and 1 billion consoles in its lifetime."

They came up JUST short.
That is the whole console market.
Thats not Xbox.
Because Xbox 360 didn't sell 300m units. X360, Wii and PS4 combined did.

I hate how that gets misinterpreted all the time.
But Xbox One, Wii U and PS4 obvisouly didn't reach 400m or more. Xbox Series, Switch and PS5 have a chance maybe

A few erroneous points keep getting mentioned, so let's address them:

1. Two years into the previous generation, the PS4 was nowhere near the 2 to 1 lead it finally secured. The difference was much, much smaller.

2. The SX and SS healthy sales, especially in the US, are not surprising: The brand is really powerful in North America (plus a few South American countries, GB, Australia, Canada...). The Xbox One, despite having had a way worse launch, and a way weaker software catalogue compared to the PS4, sold a very decent number of machines in these markets...It is elsewhere where it was practically dead.

3. People should stop trying to paint MS, a gigantic company, which has been a player for two decades; went through three generations of consoles; and recently spent close to $80 billions in acquisitions alone (nevermind what it has cost them to get third party devs to drop their titles on gamepass...) as a small and brave challenger. Them being more competitive is the least anybody with two brain cells should naturally expect.

Yea, it's not that big a deal if he was wrong, but it makes sense what he's saying. One way or the other with cloud streaming becoming more prominent and things like Game Pass showing up and more console makers moving to PC, there is a much wider potential audience out there for the types of games that are made. How many iphones are out there? How many android devices? Tablets? Televisions? There is a potential audience definitely in the 1 billion range for games previously isolated to specialized high performance hardware.

As a card carrying green rat I find this to be an honest reflection of the situation.
Really looking forward to what MS releases in the years ahead. Also look forward to what new IP Sony brings to the table. They have a track record of continually realeasing something "unique" that captures gamers attention and I'm all here for that.

The PS4 was coming off the awful PS3 gen and the Xbox One was coming off the great 360 gen. Xbox squandered the success they had with the 360 and Sony obviously had a lot of success with the PS4. Xbox One started out pretty strong with a decent lineup, but they literally stopped releasing games halfway through the Xbox One gen, the only thing that really saved their brand image towards the end of the gen was the One X and Game Pass. So it's not the same situation at all. By Sony's own admission they expected to continue that momentum and come storming out of the gates with the PS5.

I agree, when comparing the Xbox to ps5. Right now ps5 has no competition with Xbox for exclusive games. Ms definitely dropped the ball this year.

But look, last year xbox was leading when they were delivering excellent content all year long on Xbox. This year is the opposite.

Next year ps5 might have an excellent year. Bit so will xbox. Same for 2023. Same for 2024. The hits will continue to hit xbox year after year. Ps5 will just need to catch up. 2023 is a down year for xbox. That's the only down year they'll have going forward. Great competition!!

Ps5 pretty much got a price increase in the usa as well, with the horizon bundle. So it's the most expensive hardware and they still winning.
Not really surprising is it that a fairly new console is outselling a console from 2017?

Am I doing this right, like when Switch was destroying PS4 in hardware sales 😂

Isn’t this also just like the 5th month since PS5’s launch that it’s beaten Switch on units sold? Pretty crazy if true because Switch hasn’t had a price drop either hardware wise or software.

Ps5 did not get a price increase in the US. What are you talking about? Sony is still selling standalone ps5 consoles. They're pretty readily available without hzd2.

Is this a good comparison when PS5 sells everything Sony can produce every month while you can walk into any store and buy a switch?

It is interesting if you could figure out what the arpu change is cause if it has gone up yoy then obviously it means unit numbers haven't increased as much yoy.

Let's say 13% increase in revenue, a 5% increase in arpu due to the new bundle means 7.6% increase in units etc.

Inflation really helping here tbh.
When they announced the PS5 the price of 499€ wasn't really a bargain, now we had two+ years of 10% inflation plus prices going mad everywhere.
499$+tax or 550€ just won't scare off a lot of people.

I also think all the headlines around launch over PS5 going for 1000€ on eBay has added to the hype.
It's not "I have to spend" and more like "I finally get to spend".

Average consumer won’t even notice the price bump considering how we’ve been conditioned to think of the PS5 in terms of third party sales for 2 years. When people think of PS5 they think “aren’t those like 700 dollars right now?”

550 comes off as a deal to most people who don’t follow gaming. Not only that but if they do hear the price increased it will probably just make them want it more. Sony have been treating the ps5 as if its a luxury gaming item and people see it that way due to the higher price and rarity.

The cheaper and more available something is the less people feel compelled to impulse buy it. Once the ps5’s are seen on shelves you could walk into bestbuy or target not even intending on buying a gaming console but knowing how rare the ps5 is you’ll buy it just because, or holidays are coming.

It reminds me of the iPhone SE and how no one wants them.

It's funny how you omit that PS3 was coming off the dominant PS2 generation and saw thier customer base get cut in half.
.
I think this gen is going to look similar to that.
