Forza Motorsport Won’t Begin Polishing Until Next Year, Casting Doubt on Spring 2023 Date

https://wccftech.com/forza-motorspo...until-next-year-spring-2023-release-in-doubt/
According to Greenawalt, Forza Motorsport is currently in full production, but the final polishing stage won’t kick off into “sometime” in 2023. And that polishing stage won’t be a simple process, with Greenawalt cautioning that such things take “a lot of time.” You can read Greenawalt’s full rundown of how production phases work, and where Forza Motorsport is in the process, below…

“Generally, teams go through four phases. They have a concept phase, where you flare -- lots of new ideas, more than you could ever build. 10, 20 times the game you could ever build. And in this case, with Forza Motorsport, we were rethinking kind of everything. [...] Pre-production is the second phase. In pre-production, you're actually tooling up, you're making prototypes. You're proving out, "Is this any good? Does this feel right?" You try not to do too much of that, but it's an important phase. The next phase, and this is where we are right now, is production. In production you put your heads down and you build. The goal is to hit your dates, have great energy, great clarity, come together and build as a team.

And then the final stage, which will be entering as we get into next year, is polish. And polish is really critical. If you've got a massive game like [Forza] Motorsport and a lot of new systems you're rethinking, that's a lot of surface area to polish. And it takes a lot of time. The real art of game development, is not biting off more than you can polish. [...] We're deep in production now, and we'll be heading into that polish phase, sometime in the next year.”

No delay has been announced for Forza Motorsport, and I suppose it could still arrive before the official end of spring on June 31, but don’t be too surprised if the game slips to the latter half of the year.

Hope this isn't true, since they haven't announced another delay I am hoping spring is still possible but this is looking like another gosh damn delay at Microsoft. But hope that's not the case since this came was already delayed, it was supposed to come out this year.

Turn 10 is supposed to be the shining light on the corn, an example of good leadership and efficiency. I hope they don't fall apart. I know that 4K 100% native with HDR, 60fps, and raytracing everywhere in real-time is hard, but they should be able to get it done by late spring at the latest.

I mean it's a racing game. I don't really imagine them taking a long time to polish a racing game. It's not like there is a crazy amount of systems running at the same time, I think it will still hit spring and if anything probably a May release date at the latest.

It's a new engine using new DX12U tech like Mesh Shaders, VRS2.0, Sampler Feedback Streaming etc, so you would imagine they are continually finding more opportunities to improve the graphics as they develop the game. This is their first game using any of that tech. So say they use Mesh Shaders and they find there is more headroom in the game, which gives them the ability to improve even more the reflections or environments, they should do it.
They want this game to be something special. A new landmark in graphics, and since their main competition in Poly are 5 years away from releasing their next game why not take a bit of extra time to do the best they can.
We know Turn 10 know how to make a racing game.
We know they have a track record of excellent output given their studio size.
We know they are wizards at making a good engine.
This is one studio that doesn't need any concern trolling.
I'm just a egar to see this game as anyone else.
I for one cannot wait for the GT7 vs Forza threads.

I have no idea where this doubt of a Spring 2023 release is coming from?
They havent actually given us a fixed date, and Spring is till like late June.
There alot of time to get things done, when we are closer to the finish line and they are struggling we can start assuming a delay.
a MS first party game missing a deadline? I'm shocked
Lets get off that high horse a good portion of first party titles hell titles in general got delayed during the pandemic:

  • Returnal - Delayed
  • God of War Ragnorok - Delayed
  • Gran Turismo 7 - Delayed
  • Horizon Forbidden West - Delayed

And so far we havent heard anything that even indicates this is being delayed.
If that delay announcement does come, we will add it to the ever growing list of titles that have been delayed.

I hope they delay it to October if it needs it and it will mean a more polished game at launch.

Rushing games out the gate never leads to anything good. I have plenty of games to play in the meantime.

Fall apart? What a poor choice of words. We know for a fact that Turn 10 are one of the most prolific studios not only in Microsoft but in gaming. They have built a true next generation racing game, with this they have had to rebuild all their core tech, it takes time Ed.

As of now the game is still on course and I'm sure it will release in 2023 even if it has a delay, you need to chill out Ed.

Terms like ‘production’ and ‘polishing’ in a game development context, believe it or not, are more or less made up.

There’s nowhere that says production will take x years/months, and polishing will take y years/months. It’s generally accepted that ‘polishing’ will take less time than ’production’, but how long either of those will take is a complete guess. From studio to studio, and even game to game, the length of time taken to produce and then polish a game is basically random.

There’s nothing that suggests polishing starting in 2023 will cause the game to be delayed.

Click bait article. Nothing in this interview suggest that game will be delayed. It might get delayed at some point, I am not ruling this out but this interview doesn’t suggest anything like this.

How much longer do we have to wait for a top drawer, actually next-gen racer? I’m still playing Forza Motorsport 7 over here!
Just feel lucky that you bought it before it was delisted.
They can take 2 more years if they like, just don't serve me again the disappointment FM7 was.
Yes. Not so secretly Forza Motorstorm 6 was the pinnacle of the generation and they never fixed FM7.
Maybe it'll look better the next time we see it but I honestly wasn't impressed given this is a current gen only game and them saying they have a new engine
Unreal Engine 5. That's most likely a mistake when their own engine was the solution to problems such as rendering something like Flight Simulator, it needed a lot of things to be implemented to match UE5, but it feels dumb not to and instead go with UE5 - known for being heavy on CPU/GPU (although CPU ceased to be a problem this generation).

But it'll look alright and I'm sure they're making that UE5 bitch theirs. Hopefully Playground Games doesn't drop their Forza Engine tech in time for Turn 10 to eat crow.

he told you so when you spoke to him on the phone? 🤡

Sure, chief.
My preference might be PlayStation but I can give credit where credit is due. Ninja Theory did a hell of a job with Hellblade 2, that looks amazing. The new Forza was a disappointment for me graphically

Wonder what this means for RedFall and especially Starfield, then. The former I can still see coming around March-April next year, but Starfield?

Given what was shown and the technical issues it seems they need to fix up let alone all the content to add (maybe scale back on some of that like the 1,000 planets thing?), H1 2023 was always too ambitious IMO. I think it gets delayed to September 2023; they'll want to release ahead of Spiderman 2, but enough time after FF XVI that the game can actually breathe.

Plus it could really do with the extra polishing time.

Im not sure what the head of Turn 10 musing about Forza Motorsport has to do with Starfield and Redfall. And how in the world would the release of FFXVI and Spiderman on PlayStation impact the Xbox and PC release of Starfield?

Your other comments on Starfield dont seem to be based on logic. How does the framerate - pretty much the major technical issue from the showcase - translate to a reduction of (procedurally generated) content ? And with what metric do you proclaim that a H1 2023 release window is ‘ambitious’ and unlikely?
