There are plenty of good gaming phones in the market and i doubt Sony
could come up with something better

...There are?

https://www.techadvisor.com/article/724420/best-gaming-phone.html

I see a lot of phones with physical triggers, and the chipsets are hefty on high-end devices, but otherwise there's not much that makes most of these "gaming phones". And then there's a lot of smartphone controller accessories, but nobody actually carries those big bolt-ons around with them so I wouldn't say these make them "gaming phones" anywhere but around the house. What are you referring to when saying there's plenty of good gaming phones in the market?

A real "gaming phone", with real buttons, that would be something new again. Maybe not enough to not buy the next version of the phone you already like, but at least it would be something that otherwise you won't find elsewhere on the market.

Me. Just bought the Xperia 1 MK IV about a month ago. Outstanding technology if you ask me.
It is, but the Xperia phones don't offer any major meaningful advantages over similarly priced competitors. It's compatible with Sony Alpha cameras and I own an SIII, but I don't see a reason to buy an Xperia 1 when I have a Ninja V. Why did you buy that particular phone over something like an S21 Ultra?

I figure it will be Sony revealing some new gaming acquisitions, and unlike the press I don't think there's going to be another PS5 Portable or Vita successor, but rather a gaming phone model that's going to compete with ROG, Razer, and Nubia with PS5 remote play and a new custom interface with PSN stuff over android. Another Xperia Play model may be possible with a built0in controller, but I think it's likely to just be a powerful gaming focused device with gaming software like the ROG phone and others, and you'll be able to use the backbone controller and other accessories they show off.

Since Sony makes their own phones, it's not a surprise they'll be using their new mobile department to no only bring games to mobile, but try and attempt to increase their handset sales which have been stagnant for awhile. Perhaps they will tie an Xperia gaming phone to phone carriers for low monthly payment, which will make gaming phones more accessible to the mainstream at the same time.

I also expect along with accessories, probably some new software that synergizes between all of Sony's Xperia phones and the PS5. Maybe a connection with Playstations PC department as well.

We already know that Sony has dedicated a new department with multiple teams for mobile, so this event will likely show us their road map and them going all in on mobile. Especially their own branded handsets.
This would be dead on arrival. Maybe it'd sell in Japan, but Xperia has basically zero brand recognition anywhere else and nobody is going to buy a device just to steam PS5 games remotely.

The "made for pro gamers and streamers" makes me think they're targeting the Twitch/YouTube let's play crowd but I don't see how it would work unless it some sort of pass-through capture device combined with a customizable touch screen control panel that functions like an Elgato Stream Deck.

To be fair it's always an arms race when it comes to technology in flagship phones and when a new standard is set it's rarely there for long until another manufacturer outclasses another one. Sony phones are sure somewhat niche and are usually advertised to a specific group of people. However they do push for cutting edge technology in their flagship phones, there is no denying that.

Sure if you draw a line and weigh out features against price these phones might not be the first choice for many.

Brand loyalty, built quality, design, the periscope camera zoom, changeable and expandable internal storage, dedicated headphone jack, exceptional display, video pro, cinema pro, the camera feature overall.

I suppose I can see it being useful for the video specs. I carried around the original BMPCC for years and the best thing about it was having CinemaDNG RAW and ProRes 422 HQ in that form factor.

Interesting...

You are not wrong though and the example with the Ninja V is a good point which makes it hard to justify a purchase like that. Ultimately these are niche products hence the small adoption rate.

Your initial post made it sound like these phones are not worth it, that's why i started the argument.

Bring it back lads. No bezel, Oled, capable of cloud streaming your PlayStation games. I’d buy it as my next phone.

Hold up, Sony Xperia brand is still alive??
They’re actually supposedly good phones. Not the best, but near stock Android.

Fuck yeah, the Xperia Play is coming back boys!

(That phone sucked, probably. Never used one in real life.)
Xperia phones usually are great phones with best in class hardware (not taking Apple in account here, just Android phones). It's a shame to be honest that people choose to buy Samsung garbage over the Sony Xperia range. Yes the design of the case looks a bit nicer, but everything is better on Sony's phones on the inside.

Being a good phone with premium price just doesn't cut it. For that people would just go for iPhones.

Don't think being near stock Android helps either.

I miss this little guy. I have no idea what happened to mine, if I sold it or it got damaged or what, but it was a quality emulation machine and a phone in one. Being able to inject disk images into the official PSX game releases to hijack the included emulator was cool too.

If Sony releases a new Xperia Play they have to make it support Vita games though PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Make an emulator or something, anything.

Xperia z was so ahead of everyone , first 1080 P display, first ip certified, first 13MP camera…. Design was stunning. Unfortunately Sony didn’t have the foothold Samsung did in that world and suckled at marketing.

it has a physical shutter button for the camera, a headphone jack and a microSD card slot.
This is a real smartphone highlight reel in 2022, folks.
Thanks, Apple :messenger_unamused:

As for the Xperia phones, I was briefly interested in one about a decade ago, before the Android space was flooded by China.
They sat exactly in that price range where you just can’t figure out what Sony is giving you for 100+ Euro more than the competition, and can only decide it’s Sony being Sony overpricing you for their brand (see their OLED TV line, too). It’s really no wonder some people weren’t even aware the Xperia line is still a thing (and I gotta admit, I was one of them before this thread).

Looks like it's just a cooling attachment for the Xperia 1 IV.

I guess all those dozens of people with the new Xperia can now play Genshin Impact with a steady framerate.

These guys are making an odd assumption based on something shown in a short trailer, ignoring it's going to be an event Sony said would have multiple things in it, and not a 5 minute add for an accessory lol.

There going to have things to show at the event on the 12th, we won't know what they are until then unless the leakers come through.

Not first 1080p or 13 MP camera, not first ip certified, although the ip number it had I believe that was the first time a phone had that.

The problem with Sony is they had carriers, than started fighting with them, and then tried to bully them, and Sony now has to put more effort than other companies to get on them. They haven't been on a carrier since 2015 with the Z3 on T-mobile, and they discontinued it in less than half a year iirc. The 2016 Verizon Z4v was delayed so long Verizon cancelled it before it was released, so it's been almost 8 years since Sony has had a phone with a US carrier.

They did try to push Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart with direct sales but they didn't have the right strategy or good marketing to pull off a moderate base of consumers, so they have been flailing around since, and they haven't been doing much better in Europe, Africa, or Asia either, people assume Japan is buying the phones but it's been fighting other niche carrier there for awhile.

Another thing is Sony for some reason thinks they have the right to charge premiums and take forever to lower prices on their older phones, when they are in no position in the phone industry to do so. It's gotten so bad, that now they have to keep the prices high as long as possible too make money on the phone division, they were supposed to build new models for price tiers, but the Xperia 5. 10, and 1 are all overpriced.

Supposedly they are going to bring the L series back to have a phone in the $500-$600 rage but with specs of a $250-$300 phone which only solves a third of the problem.

It is, but the Xperia phones don't offer any major meaningful advantages over similarly priced competitors.

4K Screens with HDR, QuadHD screens with some of the best HDR, the best audio and DAC since LG left the market, no notches or punches on the screen, great build quality, some of the best camera and video features, best debris water protection of the flagships, least likely to need a case, better optimization for apps than Samsung and Apple, less system stuff taking up storage space, less saturated colors (Samsung), better built in apps and features, now 21:9 screens giving you the movie experience, batteries usually last longer despite using the same Lion tech, phone is likely to last 5 years without major performance or memory issues, and audio/video editing software is better.

The issues I mentioned above are some of the primary reasons the phones aren't doing better along with Sony's bad decision making that has barely changed despite 3 leadership changes in the phone division. Apple will eventually copy and rename some of these advantages and willt ake credit for the innovations, just like they did when Windows Phone and Blackberry died.

Samsung is an unoptimized mess since the S5, when they destroyed their phones longevity, battery life, and hardware reliability, then with the S6 they kept the same problems but gave a surface level glass design to pretend their phones were premium and that's been going on until today. It's brand name and Apple and Samsung bullying everyone out the market and off the shelves, it's one of the reasons Apple switched to Samsung strategy of having multiple flagship tiers at different price points and prepaid phones so they can take up more space with their phones and accessories, it's one of the reasons HTC doesn't even bother anymore, and just sells their phones online. Apple and Samsung are not that good in phones, especially Samsung. It's forced choice and years of mindshare and most buyers not knowing other things are out there.

However, none of that takes away from the fact Sony and Microsoft screwed up the momentum they had and just let everything fall part, at least when MS came back into phones with the Duo, they had a plan, knew who they were targeting, and have been building things up. Sony is in the exact same position they were in during 2016.

But maybe this event will showcase their new roadmap. Doubt it but we'll see.

Being a good phone with premium price just doesn't cut it. For that people would just go for iPhones.

Don't think being near stock Android helps either.

This is a thing people, mostly techies, phone press journalists and Youtube reviewers, or people who would buy an LG Wing or a One Plus phone often get wrong here.

You often see people in these categories act like being stock or close to stock android is the golden standard, other than brand specific features, and they act as if that if you want the best phone out there, stock android or coming close is a must, but most consumers don't freaking want stock android and that's been true for almost 15 years.

They dislike stock android, that's why the Pixels generally haven't bee doing well, the best selling phones are either not android, or a heavy coat of paint with android in the background. It's what sells people the phones in the first place and makes the difference obvious. Having a bunch of brands trying to make their phones as close to stock as possible is why people don't buy them. Apple doesn't have stock android, Samsung Doesn't have stock android, Microsoft didn't have stock android and still doesn't now using android, Blackberry didn't, and when they moved to android still didn't, LG before they quit didn't use stock android either, and these were the biggest brands at some point. Huawei didn't use stock android, Zte didn't use stock android, HTC didn't use stock android.

The people putting stock android on a pedestal seem to be in a bubble.
