Sony buys Savage Game Studios

This is great news for mobile fans the world over. Blizzard knocked it out of the park with Diablo Immortal, and with an even better company than Blizzard behind the wheel, Sony & Savage should change the face of mobile gaming forever. I'd love to see a Days Gone or Last of Us clicker/runner. Sony's got the IPs, the customers, and the money. The possibilities are endless.

It's an european (finnish with berlin studio) mobile game company with about 25 employees (according to their linkedin). Probably doesn't cost that much to buy them.
Their motto is "We make action games with epic stories to foster lasting connections with players around the world."
And Grove Street Games About Us is “An influential developer for 14 years and counting. We have delighted fans of the world's greatest games with bold interpretations on new platforms, and have delivered fresh and original games to millions of happy players. We have grown to be a leader in the industry because of the commitment to building incredible and accessible gaming experiences

The mobile gaming sector is a multi-billion market. Most games are pretty simple with short development cycles (much less complex) and service based + Pay2Win and growing and growing. I guess sony want's to have a share of this big cake.
The risk to fail in this sector is high but the development-costs are much, much lower, so overall the risk is not that high.

the genre is the problem. In the mobile AAA live shooter space, this will go up against Warzone, Apex Legends, Fortnite, PUBG and stuff being pushed out by Tencent and Netease. It’s high risk

Sony has also a big enough fanbase so they can be quite sure whatevery they release will be a hit.

They don’t really have a big FPS IP, though.

Probably just cost a couple million. The company i want Sony to buy the most is Konami Digital Entertainment, so we can get its IPs as AAA games on Ps5. Those Konami games were my favorite during the Ps2 era. How much would that cost?

It's definitely double figures in terms of valuation (4.4m pretty much guarantees it) but yeah, I don't think this is alot.

Never heard of them, but guess we’ll see what they come up with.

Some interesting choice of words by Mr. Hulst over on the blog post announcing the acquisition:

“As we assured you before with our plans to bring select titles to PC, our efforts beyond console in no way diminish our commitment to the PlayStation community, nor our passion to keep making amazing single-player, narrative-driven experiences.”

Perhaps a little something to reassure console players as they expand into mobile and other stuff like Gaas?

Not exciting for me since I don't play mobile games, but may be for others who do. Though since this studio has never released a game, it's up in the air what they can do.

Fate/Grand Order is a big sony mobile game ?

It is #8th globally in july but didn't turn up in #10 for H1

Also kinda can get an idea from the Sony Supplementary Info report (110,923 Million JPY = 800m* USD for FY2021, 143m* for Q1FY2022). * Using the current conversation rate cause I am lazy.

More revenue means more PlayStation games. It’s a good thing
Just a devil's advocate (personally don't care if MTX doesn't bother me too much, i don't have to opt in and if that's the only way that games get made, I shall find a different medium), couldn't Blizzard fans also use this to 'justify' the game design of Diablo Immortals. Assuming that Sony's mobile games are going to be similar to what we see on mobile.

I believe he’s said that multiple times. There’s a bunch of angry people upset at PlayStation games coming to PC, or their new plans to invest heavily in Live service games.

Yes of course, they can.
Game monetization brings in extra revenue that gives studios bigger war chests for game development, talent acquisition and general resilience.

Right, so I think it’s his attempt at reassurance once again. But I do find it interesting he is specifically continuing to say “select” titles to PC. We’ll see how that plays out, because there’s quite a few people who believe it’s going to be every game to PC, and some even believe day and date is an inevitability.

But Hermen’s choice of words and his persistence on using “select” repeatedly seems to imply careful consideration of specific titles. Anyway, not really relevant to the thread topic except that it was in the blog for this acquisition, I just found it to be an interesting part.

We sure Jim isn't money laundering?

Every other week they seem to acquire someone I've never ever heard off before.

joking aside, are these the guys that made that wipeout mobile card game? Did that even come out?

Nope these guys as a studio have never released a game.
One of their founders was at Rovio(angry birds), so there that.

They relatively recently got the funding to make their first mobile shooter game.
With Sony money also backing the project they could make a pretty big game.
But in the mobile space its basically a gamble whether the game will blow or not.

If Sony wanted they could badge this game with Destiny or Killzone or something so it atleast has a name going in.
Otherwise its really hit and miss in the mobile space if you are coming with an unknown name.

They do seem to be using Unreal Engine for development so assuming the game is big/good enough they could make it a console release too.
